Wonder of Ages Slot: Overview
Historically themed slots are nothing new and power plenty of games old and new. A quick trip to your favourite provider will probably turn up history lessons from the stone age, to the middle ages, and beyond. However, there aren’t too many that feature a bunch of different civilisations in one. Blueprint Gaming seeks to redress that imbalance in their new slot Wonder of Ages. Treat it as Ancient Civilisations 101, where players can enjoy not one but four powerhouses of the ancient world - Rome, Egypt, China, and Greece - four for the price of one if you will. Each one gets its own bonus game, and players can also gain entry to the popular progressive Jackpot King Deluxe Network.
In keeping with the historical theme mash-up, the background to the 5x3 grid is a patchwork of buildings from different countries. We get pyramids, and Greco-Roman colonnaded structures, for instance, laying the scene. The lighting is nice too. It’s that sunrise, or sunset glow, that manages to romanticise everything. Like an early evening stroll around Palatine Hill as the ghosts of the past come out and bring the old ruins to life.
Before you commence play, bets need to be settled which are available from 20 p/c up to £/€40 per spin – manual or auto. RTP is down slightly from the old standard of 96%, but is not terrible at 95.49% RTP as it also includes the jackpot and reserve. The rules, meanwhile, require at least three symbols on one of the 20 paylines to form a winning combination.
The symbols are all new, so instead of royal symbols for the low pays we get roman numerals – I, II, and III which is clever. Next are two characters from Asian/ Eastern history, which look like Genghis Khan and a Babylonian ruler. They are followed by Ramses, Leonidas, Cleopatra, and Caesar as the most valuable. Apologies if these names are off, but indicate the eras used for the premiums. When it comes to wins, values range. As an example, five Genghis’ are worth 12.5 times the stake, while five Caesars will top you up with 50 times the stake. Alternatively, if you land all five different characters on a payline, the game rewards 200 times the stake. All of these wins pale in comparison to the wild symbols though. As well as substituting for any symbol except the scatter, a line of wilds are worth 500 times the stake.
Wonder of Ages Slot: Features
Along with the three juicy jackpots, Wonder of Ages has a bonus game that ties all civilisations together. It starts with the logo scatter symbol which has three of the characters on it. If 3, 4, or 5 scatters land in view they payout x5, x10, or x100 the total bet respectively and also trigger the Wonder of Ages Bonus. The player is then presented with a screen that has a list of bonus games, with coins beside them. Players pick coins until they reveal 3 matching ones to unlock the corresponding bonus game. There are 4 bonus games in total and each comes with 9 free spins that cannot be retriggered:
- Empire of Rome Free spins – reel three is stacked with wild emperor symbols.
- Wonders of Egypt Free Spins – On each spin, up to 5 symbols can be turned wild.
- Rise of Greece Free Spins – Free game starts with an x1 win multiplier that increases by +1 every 3 spins. A special wild symbol is locked in the centre of reel 3 for the duration.
- Mighty Dynasty Free Spins – On every spin a random win multiplier is applied up to x5.
After the 9 free spins have been used, players return to the Wonder of Ages Bonus screen to pick coins again. This cycling through the bonus games continues until the Fallen Temple symbol is finally revealed, ending the feature. In other words, if you're lucky enough you'll get to play several different bonus games in a row.
Next is what could be Wonder of Ages main draw for a lot of people - the Jackpot King Deluxe Pot. This is triggered when 5 Jackpot King Deluxe symbols appear on reels 1 to 5. Then it becomes a case of landing crown symbols to climb a ladder with ascending multiplier rewards. Collect 15 or more crowns, and you get to the spin The Wheel King. This is where you can collect big win multipliers, or one of the three progressive jackpots – Regal, Royal, or Jackpot King. When won, the jackpots return to a seed amount and start growing again as players feed the pot.
Wonder of Ages Slot: Verdict
So will players learn much about history if they fire up Wonder of Ages for a few spins? Not really, but they might enjoy the changing scenery along the way, as well as four different bonus games. The free spins aren’t super different from each other, but it is nice to mix things up all the same. It is also nice that you can technically trigger one round of free spins after another, until the Fallen Temple symbol is revealed.
How likely is that to happen? That’s anyone’s guess without stats, but to get the most out of the game you will need repeat free spins. Blueprint has capped max potential at 10,000x. Bust out the calculator and tap in some numbers and it quickly becomes clear that you will need to avoid that Fallen Temple symbol until the return of the Roman empire to endanger that win cap.
Many, if not most, gamers who line up slots in the Jackpot King network do it for a crack at the top prize. Makes sense too given the large prizes up for grabs. As far as slots in the network go, Wonder of Ages is quite an entertaining one. The 4 bonus games keep things fresh and accessing more than one at a time helps spike adrenaline. It is tough to score massive, non-jackpot wins though as the payouts are small. Unless it's specifically a jackpot game you are looking for, you're probably better of playing something else.
Wonder of Ages is a decent entry into the Jackpot King Deluxe network, but is hard to justify playing if it didn’t have that jackpot attached.
