With the word "burst" in the title it was almost obvious we weren't going to be served a bowl of ultra potential fruit soup. Yet, with a max win of over 1,800x it's at least an improvement compared to its cousin Starburst. Because that's what this game more or less is - a follow up to one of the most played online slots ever made.
BerryBurst is played on a 5x3 reel set and just like Starburst, this slot doesn't come with a free spins game. Instead, players can benefit from cluster mechanics and expanding wild reels which, as opposed to Starburst, can cover the full screen.
Visually, it does look phenomenal with its fruits suspended in sweet juice, a backdrop with warm colors and some chill music to top it off. The game is delivered with 7 regular symbols which are represented by card suits along with limes, pink berries, mandarines, and the raspberry which yields a 500x win for a full screen. Since there is no bonus game, there is obviously no scatter symbol to be had. In BerryBurst, it's all about the wild symbol.
Wild symbols can appear anywhere on the reels in the main game and in re-spins. One or more wild symbol landing anywhere on the reels automatically expand to cover the entire reel they land on and is then followed by a re-spin. This way it's possible to land a full screen of wilds. The payout for 15 wild symbols is 500x, but the re-spin feature can pay up to 1000x if you land a full screen on the initial spin with minimum one wild reel.
A symbol is part of a cluster if 5 or more connect horizontally or vertically adjacent to the same symbol. When 6 or more wilds form a cluster, they only substitute for symbols on either side of the cluster. Due to this, the only instance when wilds form a cluster and do not substitute for a symbol on either side of them is when the whole screen is filled with wilds.
This is more or less an updated version of Starburst, and as such, not overly exciting. Production-wise NetEnt rarely fails to deliver, but the payouts are (again) disappointing. If this would have been promoted and presented as Starburst II with a boost in potential it would have been an instant hit. Then again, seeing how well Starburst has worked for NetEnt, chances are this one will too. For the hardcore gamer, however, this is a no go. Too much risk, too little reward.
The standard version of BerryBurst is a low to medium variance offering with a 96.56% RTP, while the MAX version of the game is significantly more volatile with a 6,000x max win potential.
