Court of Hearts: Slot Overview

Lewis Carroll’s zany world of Wonderland returns to drive Court of Hearts, a slot based around the Queen of Hearts character and her entourage. Court of Hearts follows on from Play'n GO's previous foray into Alice’s realm, Rabbit Hole Riches, though, technically, the two games have little in common besides their location. Several changes have been made this time around, including a max win increase and a few mathematical alterations, making Court of Hearts a more complex slot than before.

Starting things off in a straightforward manner, however, is the game’s play area, which is a 5-reel, 3-row grid, with 10 fixed paylines to land winning combinations across. This is a definite size increase over the 3x3 action that Rabbit Hole Riches had to offer. A dash of creativity went into creating a story to give the game more personality. Apparently, the Jack of Hearts has been put on trial for some nasty deed he didn’t commit – not that guilt or innocence stands for much when the Queen is in a malevolent mood. Anyway, Jack’s plight adds a bit of colour to an already good looking game, the sort we’ve come to expect from Play'n GO's graphics team.

Any device is suitable to get Jack off the hook, from desktop, tablets, to mobiles. A lower starting stake than normal of 10 p/c is available for players trying to stretch a budget, while those looking to go big can pick bets as high as $/€100 per spin. Rated 9 out of 10, Court of Hearts is certainly a volatile venture, offering RTP's of varying values. The most generous version generates a theoretical return value of 96.27%.

Wonderland might have been full of all sorts of weird and wonderful things to trip up Alice, but you won’t find anything in Court of Hearts so confusing. Wins, for example, hit when 3 or more matching tiles line up from the leftmost reel. Here, 4 card suits have been used to represent the low pay symbols, while other characters you’ll bump into on the reels include the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and a blue Jack of Hearts. The most desirable symbol is, unsurprisingly, the Queen of Hearts herself. For one, she pays 20x the bet for 5 of a kind, and she also turns wild when free spins are active. The other wild is played by the Queen’s sceptre, which is worth the same as the Queen and replaces regular pay symbols to complete a combo.

Court of Hearts: Slot Features

Court of Hearts - free spins

It might be a little surprising to see Court of Hearts offers a cascade system, yet there’s one of those on board, alongside 3 random reel modifiers and free spins with a progressive multiplier.

Cascades are triggered after every win in all phases of play. This mechanic removes the combo in question off the reels, and new symbols fall into place. Repeat wins are possible, only ending when no new combinations lands.

The 3 modifiers are activated whenever the Rabbit Hole symbol appears, awarding one of the following:

  • Cheshire Cat – the Cheshire cat wild expands to cover all positions on its reel, then triggers a cascade. The full reel wild moves to another position as long as new wins are created.
  • Caterpillar – here, the Caterpillar character turns 3 to 7 symbols wild.
  • Dormouse – a mega wild symbol is added to the board, randomly growing in size from 2x2 up to 4x3 at the most.

Landing 3 scatters in view awards 9 free spins plus an x5 payout. To help in this endeavour, the Rabbit Reward feature may randomly place 2 scatters onto the grid before a spin. In free spins, the high-paying Queen of Hearts becomes wild, substituting for anything but scatters – landing a scatter awards +1 more free spin. In addition, every line win in free spins increases the win multiplier, with no upper set limit.

Court of Hearts: Slot Verdict

Once again, Play'n GO phones in a good quality slot that delivers solid gaming without being exceptional as such. Starting with the theme, well, it doesn’t take much imagination to make an Alice in Wonderland game, except they’ve done it so stylishly, it is easier to overlook the lack of creativity in that regard. Court of Hearts’ quality visuals and wackily appropriate sound effects are all packaged in a slick Play’n GO manner.

As far as Alice slots go, and there are a few, Court of Hearts is a worthy addition. It offers a diverse gaming experience from the previous one, Rabbit Hole Riches, in several ways. It’s a lot more of a volatile, big win game all around. Which is better to play will certainly come done to personal preference - each one has something different to offer. Court of Riches is the more lethal and has a cascades system which typically goes down well. On the other hand, Rabbit Hole Riches has the pacey 3x3 thing going on and an original set of features. A coin toss might be in order if you really can’t decide which one to fire up. If potential is a driving influence, then Court of Hearts is the winner, where payouts as high as 8,500 times the bet are possible, compared to 5,000x for the other one.

To sum up, Court of Hearts might not bring anything new to the table - its theme, features, and gameplay are pretty common. Yet, it does it all with style, and there are no caveats to be aware of before diving down its rabbit hole.

Good

Though not overly original in any way, Court of Heart is a competent game that gets the job done in typical Play’n Go fashion.
