Disco Diamonds: Overview

Disco (inspired) music might have seen a revival in recent times, but it remains as divisive as ever. Platform shoes, open shirts, wide bottom flares, and medallions aren't to everyone's taste. Still, developer Play'n GO have crafted Disco Diamonds, a slot with significant potential that might be enough to overcome some of the aversion to the flamboyant music genre. Chock full of old school slot symbols, a win-all-ways pay system and features bring Disco Diamonds kicking and screaming out of the 70s into a more contemporary space.

Right off the bat Disco Diamonds has a similar look and feel to some of the other games in the genre, such as the flamboyant Village People Macho Moves slot from Fortune Factory Studios with its disco ball wilds and neon pink colours. The 5-reel, 243 win ways grid has prime position in the DJ booth of a hip, exclusive club bathed in blue and purple lighting. There is an almost art deco look to the furnishings, plus a couple of oddly out of place, yet in place, panther statues adding an extra dash of class, or vulgarity, depending on your outlook.

The mandatory disco track hovering in the background starts off pretty subdued, but gets foot tappingly good during features when the DJ finally decides to put on a decent record. Overall, a quality Play’n GO production on the audio/visual front.

Players gain entry to this event on any device with stake choices from 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin. Disco Diamond serves up yet another dependable Play’n GO math model, skewed towards those who prefer medium volatility gameplay. RTP may be adjusted depending on the individual operator's setting, but the default rating of 96.29% is as solid as ever. As always, take a quick look at the paytable before joining in the show to know which version you're playing.

One nice thing about Disco Diamond is its pay system. Despite the retro reels/symbols, there are 243 win ways rather than a bunch of fixed paylines. Winning combinations start from the leftmost reel, and consist of three adjacent matching symbols, in any row.

As mentioned, the symbols are retro classics, numbering nine in all. The first five are low pay lemons, cherries, Bars, Double Bars, and Triple Bars, with a shiny, almost metallic finish. The remaining four premiums are sevens, double sevens, triple sevens, and diamonds. Land five of these in a row for a reward of 2 to 5 times the stake.

One last thing, Disco Diamond has a couple of wilds which contribute positively to the win rate. The standard silver disco ball wild appears on any reel to substitute for any regular pay symbol - five in a row are also worth 50 times the stake. The other wild, we'll cover next.

Disco Diamonds: Features

It ain't no party without a disco ball dangling from somewhere. In this game, special golden disco ball wilds are instrumental in formulating the best returns possible. For starters, landing one or more in the base or bonus game triggers a Disco Respin. When so happens, all triggering special wilds are then locked in position for a single respin, and the win multiplier increases from x1 to x2. Should a new special wild land, another respin is awarded, increasing the multiplier by +1 with no upper limit on how high it can go.

Any previously held special wilds are unlocked for the next respin, so they don't build up on screen. When no new special wilds land, the feature comes to an end, resetting the win multiplier in the process.

It's hard to miss the tempting wheel rotating slowing above the reels, displaying a host of prizes. Landing 3 bonus scatter symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 triggers this Bonus Wheel. The wheel drops down over the screen, awarding cash prizes of 7x, 10x, 25x, or 50x the stake. Alternatively, you may win 5, 7, 10, or 20 free spins.

The free spins game is the most desirable part of Disco Diamonds since that's where the significant max win may be cracked. It is possible to trigger Disco Respins from free spins too; the difference now is the win multiplier does not reset when respins end. Unfortunately, the multiplier does not apply to wins occurring on regular free spins. Finally, for the record, all wilds are special wilds during Disco Respins or free spins.

Disco Diamonds: Verdict

Unless you are a disco buff or fan of classic gaming, it may take a little while to warm to Disco Diamond's charm. The game relies heavily on respins which chug along nicely when you've land a sweet roll of consecutive Disco Ball Wilds. However, to balance the mechanic, Play’n GO has reined in the symbol values, crippling much of the base game, or even free spins which don't benefit from the win multiplier. It means if you don't get the features in, bankrolls can take a hit, as does the enthusiasm for what is in many ways a fruit slot tarted up for a night out.

Fortunately, they do pop up quite regularly, and the respins feature can be a good one, especially during free spins. Even winning the lowest number, 5, from the bonus wheel can be nicely extended when the handy Disco Balls turn up. Notable potential is there if they do so as well. Find your groove, and wins of up to 10,000 times the stake is theoretically possible, double the amount you usually find in most Play’n GO slots. On the negative side, due to the addition of the respins feature, the free spins frequency appears to have taken a hit. Prepare for frustration when the bonus wheel awards a win multiplier instead of free spins after a long wait.

Disco Diamonds ticks several of the right boxes - potential is there, as is high volatility for the harder-edged gambler. Great flows of profitable respins/free spins are possible, but there's not much in the way of a Plan B. If you fail to latch onto the features it can be a struggle to stay positive while bopping at this disco.

Fair

Disco Diamonds is a run of the mill slot with stand up stats and features that work well together, though the generic symbols/disco mix might dent the appeal.
