Divine Links: Slot Overview

Divine Links is the debut slot from developer Lucksome, a Malta-based studio owned by Blueprint Gaming. This is no freshman outfit. Lucksome possesses decades of industry experience and is headed by Bryan Upton, who previously ran the RNG games product development unit at iGaming powerhouse NetEnt. Blueprint Gaming clearly saw potential at the newly formed outfit and quickly hovered them up to join its growing list of acquired studios. With big names in the industry popping up at Lucksome, the pressure was on to deliver.

Well, first impressions were tepid at best. The team selected a common theme to showcase what they can do, that of Ancient Greece. Divine Links, as it's been titled, doesn’t make amazing use of the theme either. The action takes place on a 5x3, 20-payline grid, surrounded by clouds. It’s hardly inspiring stuff for all its talk of divinity. There are no beings playing harps or deities lining up lightning bolts to hiff at unfortunate mortals on the ground, making the game lack a bit of personality. There is a physical slot feel about Divine Luck, however, so if this is what the studio was going for, they’ve succeeded. If you like the approach, great; if not, Divine Links strikes as disappointingly plain.

A massive range of bets can be found in Divine Links from 20 p/c to possibly £/€500 per spin at the upper end. The full gamut of stats is available to let players make an informed choice as to whether to spin for some of that divine luck. The RTP scores pretty well, generating a figure of 96.01%, while volatility comes in as medium, classified as 5 out of 10. Bonus and win frequency get a 7 out of 10 rating from the maker, so while that doesn’t mean much as a percentage, you can expect fairly frequent activity on the reels.

Half of the pay symbols are J-A royals, while the other half are apples, pearls, doves, and an Ancient Greek attired damsel. If you’re fortunate enough to land a full line of premium symbols, a payout worth 12.5 to 50 times the stake is coming your way. Wilds are worth double what the lady is worth and also replace regular symbols to complete winning lines. In addition, wilds have cash values imprinted on them, so they count as money symbols – covered below.

Divine Links: Slot Features

Divine Links - Lucksome Locks feature in play

Landing 6 money symbols in view trigger the game’s Lux Reels feature. At the start of this round, an extra row is added to the reel matrix, increasing it to 5x4 in size. When activated, 3 spins are initially awarded where only money symbols or heart symbols land, resetting the spin counter back to 3 when they do and lock in place. Heart symbols transform into either money symbols, rose scatters, or upgrade symbols which multiply cash values by x2. The round ends when spins run to zero, or each position is full.

If 2 rose scatters land in Lux Reels or 3 in the base game, then free spins are won. Players have 3 options of varying volatilities – low, medium, or high. The first two award 6 free spins, a guaranteed Lux Reel trigger, and 1 regular symbol converted into a money symbol. The third highly volatile round has 8 free spins and larger cash values on the money symbols.

If free spins are triggered from the main game Lux Reels feature, players may be able to access a free spins gamble feature. Here you can either buy an extra free spin with part of your winnings, gamble to win 2 free spins, or collect.

Another extra is the Lucksome Locks feature. If 5 money symbols hit, then players have the option of paying double their bet to lock them on the reels and spin every other position. Only blank spaces or money symbols can land during Lucksome Locks spins.

Lastly, where permitted, players can pay 52.5 times their total bet to trigger free spins via the bonus buy option.

Divine Links: Slot Verdict

With so much experience to draw on at Lucksome, Divine Links comes across as a bit of a let-down. It’s certainly not a riotously original experience that takes players to places they’ve never been before - quite the opposite. From a run-of-the-mill theme to rehashed features, Divine Links feels like gaming of yore. If competitors were eyeing Lucksome’s first release, curious about how the team would burst onto the scene, then Divine Links is unlikely to be too concerning. Of course, this is Lucksome’s first slot, so it’s early days yet.

On that note, Divine Links is not completely devoid of thoughtful design. Having three options when the bonus game is triggered mixes things up to a degree, though they are much of a muchness. Less interesting is the Lux Reels extra, which is a standard pick ‘n click feature, so nothing to get excited about. Perhaps if Lucksome had buried the features deep in an absorbingly original theme, the game might have been more appealing. As it is, Divine Links’s ten-a-penny gameplay and cookie-cutter looks fail to elicit much excitement.

If Lucksome wanted to cautiously make sure their debut ran smoothly rather than focus on stunning players with wild innovation, they’ve succeeded. Now the cherry has been popped, so to speak, will Lucksome let the creative floodgates loose for the next one? Considering how safe they’ve played it with Divine Links, it would be a major surprise to see them follow up with something uber-revolutionary. But perhaps shock and awe is the longer-term game plan? We’re bound to find out in due course.

Don't Miss

If you like what you've seen here, be sure to have a look at Lucksome's second release as well. Titled Joker Maxima, it is played using 5-reels and 10-paylines while offering the chance to win over 7,000 times your stake.

Fair

Though a perfectly well-made slot, Divine Links is a conventional game by most accounts with little to get hyped about.
