Fishin' Frenzy Megaways: Review

The original Fishin' Frenzy is a rather simple 10-payline slot that still can be found at a few selected casinos, Videoslots being one of them. The slot was developed by Australian studio Reel Time Gaming who has licensed it out to both Merkur and Blueprint Gaming. Having been squeezed through the Megaways-O-Tron, it's now ready for another round, so dig up some maggots and grab your fishing gear ya'll.

For the most part, the developers have stayed true to the original, but underneath the hood, there's an entirely different engine at work. By adding another 15,615 possible ways to win, the game literally went from fishing with grandpa from his canoe, to hanging out with El Chapo on his Yacht in the Mexican Gulf. Ok, so we're exaggerating a bit, but we're sure you catch the drift. In terms of gameplay, however, it's just as simple as before. Fishin' Frenzy Megaways comes with 6-reels and up to 15,625 ways to win. Playable on all devices from between 0.10 to 10€ per spin, you'll take to the ocean to reel in cash prizes.

It's a simple game that looks a bit tired visually, but then again, it's also part of the charm. With a retro feel and the characteristical sound effects of the spinning reels that you otherwise typically find in Novomatic slots, you'll see an ocean backdrop with the reel set positioned beneath the surface. On the reels, you'll see the usual collection of 10 to A royals as well as tackle boxes, life belts and fishing rods. The top standard symbol is the seagull which gives you 200 times your stake for 5 on a payline.

A fisherman represented the wild which substitutes for all symbols bar the scatter. You'll also come across special fish symbols that can deliver payouts of 1, 3, 5 and 10 times your stake if you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 respectively. These fish symbols come to good use in the free spins feature as you will see.

Free spins

Like many Blueprint Megaways slots, Fishin' Frenzy comes with a bonus buy option. For a cost of 100 times your stake you're guaranteed to trigger the Free Spins. If you want to land the bonus organically, however, look out for the fishing boat scatter - 3, 4, 5 or 6 of them anywhere on the reels will give you 10, 15, 25 or 50 free games respectively.

With a rather catchy tune swinging in the background (almost the best part of the bonus), the basic idea here is the same as in the main game, except for one significant benefit. Remember those special fish symbols? Each one of these comes with a cash value attached. If you land the fisherman, he'll reel in any special fish symbols that appear on the reels to collect the cash prizes. Each individual fish can give you up to 5o times your stake. Furthermore, if additional fishermen appear they'll multiply the winnings - land 5 fishermen and each cash prize will be collected 5 times. If luck is on your side, you could potentially land a 10,000x sea monster.

Fishin' Frenzy Megaways: Verdict

This is a basic game with simple cartoon-style visuals and equally simplistic gameplay. Typically, that's not necessarily a problem as some of the best games we know are even more straightforward than this one. However, the game appears a bit lifeless, tired and dated and you almost get the feeling of staring at a children's book about fishing. Moreover, the main game is quite dull unfortunately and all you really do is wait for the free spins to drop.

There's plenty of potential in Fishin' Frenzy Megaways although it's not as explosive as we would have liked it to be. Instead, you spend the bonus round collecting, for the most part at least, relatively small to medium sized cash prizes, building your winnings little by little. This is not a game that we'll bookmark as a favourite but for some simple Megaways action, it gets the job done.

Fair

The old school look make it hard to recommend this game for young players, and its otherwise mellow charm isn’t quite enough to engage those with more sophisticated tastes.
