Fortunes of Ali Baba (Play'n GO): Slot Overview

In terms of market strategy, nothing has changed over at Play'n GO. The Swedish provider keeps churning out new games as if their lives depended on it and at a rate that very few, if any, other providers comes even close to. Normally, as we've seen in some other cases, this would eventually start to affect the overall quality, but in the case of Play'n GO the formula they have got going appears to work quite well. Sure, we don't get a whole lot of innovation, and the lifespan of each slot title isn't all that long but many of us still end up giving each new slot a bit of our attention.

Fortunes of Ali Baba is the latest slot to come out of the Play'n GO factory. The slot is set by the entrance to the mythical cave where the 40 Thieves hid their ill-gotten gains. Someone must have 'Open Seasame-d' it because the door is wide open. Despite the transparent reels, it's too dark to discern what riches lay just out of reach. There are 5 reels, each with 3 rows, and crisscrossed by 20 fixed paylines. The setting makes sense, but most of the screen is taken up by a big dark hole. It's not the Oriental buffet of sights and sounds it could have been, but it does the job, and is appealing enough to the eye. Beneath the reels is the menu bar where players can choose stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 to set the game in motion.

The rules are simple. Combinations of three or more matching symbols right to left result in a payout. The symbols used are like the rest of the game, functional but not overly exciting. The low pay section of the paytable is comprised of wispy, genie smoke looking 10 – A royals that are backed by 4 high pay symbols which are bowls of spices, precious stones, a golden amulet, and one of those curved Arabian daggers. Symbol values are so-so with the dagger the most precious at 14 times the stake for a line of  five. The wilds offer a lot better value, and there are two of them. The Ali Baba Wild can turn up at any time, and the Thieves Wild pops up during the free spins round. They are both able to substitute for any other pay symbol, and they will both payout 250 times the stake for five of a kind.

The math model powering the Fortunes of Ali Baba slot is capable of coughing up some decent numbers. First is the volatility, which Play’n GO has rated at 8 out of 10. Not their most volatile, but a high figure all the same. Like other Play’n GO releases, Fortunes of Ali Baba comes with several RTP configurations that can be set by the operator. The one to go for, and the default RTP, is 96.89%, but it can be found at 94.63% or even lower. Not diabolical, but one setting is like Ali Baba, the other's like the 40 Thieves if you will. Other than crossing your fingers for scatters, there isn't much going on in the base game so let's open sesame and its bag of tricks.

Fortunes of Ali Baba Slot (Play'n GO): Slot Features

Free spins feature in action

Ali Baba might be the one with the rep, but without Morgiana behind the scenes, we wouldn't even know the woodcutter's name. Morgiana is the slave girl from the story who saves Ali's life multiple times. She is also the one who deals the leader of the 40 Thieves a death blow. Here she is honoured as the game's scatter. When 2 scatters land on the first and fifth reel, they trigger the Den of Thieves Bonus feature. Like entering your own cave you get to open pots which can reveal instant prizes or trigger free spins.

There are 5 levels to the Den of Thieves Bonus round. If players pick a pot with an instant prize they are sent up to the next level and can continue picking. Pots can reveal free spins which triggers that feature. Alternately, pick the thieves and the bonus round is over and it is back to the main game. The levels and what they contains are these:

  • Level 1 – up to 10x the total bet.
  • Level 2, 3 – up to 10x the total bet, free spins, or thieves.
  • Level 4 – up to 100x the total bet, free spins, or thieves.
  • Level 5 – free spins or thieves.

If free spins are triggered, any prizes up to that point are collected and paid out after the free spins round concludes. Players start the bonus round with 8 Free Spins with an Ali Baba wild present on each spin. If a Thieves Wild lands it triggers a re-spin. During the re-spin, the Thieves Wild moves towards the Ali Baba Wild and as it does so it leaves wilds scattered along its path. More than one Thieves Wild can be present at the same time and they all create wild trails. The bonus round can be extended by 2 scatters landing which adds 2 additional free spins.

Fortunes of Ali Baba Slot (Play'n GO): Slot Verdict

Play’n GO has piled on a few slots based on stories and legends recently, and Ali Baba is another pretty good example. It’s not the flashiest game around by a long shot, but it’s not hard on the eyes either. Instead of dazzling players with visual effects and innovation, they have concentrated on hitting the basics right. With its solid math model, and potential wins of up to 9,948 times the stake there are no complaints there. In saying that though, players have a one in a billion chance of hitting the max level of returns and coming anywhere close to the max payout in any Play'n GO slot has proved almost impossible.

The base game is a tad on the slow side with its relatively low-value symbols and being devoid of any extra features which could have mixed shaken things up. This means Fortunes of Ali Baba is all about triggering the bonus game and getting those wilds to roam as much as possible. All up, Fortunes of Ali Baba is a solid slot with good potential, though a little light on x-factor or exciting new features. But, it does what it needs to and is a decent option if you are looking for satisfying payouts, and don’t mind staring into the pits of a dank cave most of the time.

Good

Fortunes of Ali Baba is yet another solid slot with good potential from Play’n GO, even if the final product is somewhat bare bones.
