Gold Money Frog (NetEnt): Overview

Back in 2007, NetEnt released a cute wee slot called Super Lucky Frog which had the distinction of being one of their first progressive jackpots. It slowly faded into oblivion largely because of its Flash-driven software. You can still find it here and there online, NetEnt themselves host a demo version at their website for a trip down memory lane. It's not bad, considering its age, but things have changed in 12 years. And yet, things also manage to stay the same. Gold Money Frog is the latest old slot from the NetEnt catalogue to get dredged up and reskinned to make it palatable for the Asian market. With 3 progressive jackpots, and several extra features, what could go wrong? Strap in.

Yes it's Asian themed, but it's not over the top Asian styled which is appreciated. We get a bit of pond action as a nod to the original, in the background. The 5-reel, 3-row setup is located in a pagoda looking structure, with the pond mentioned above in the foreground full of lotus blossoms and leaves. It's basic but functional, and players are in no doubt what slot category they are in. Symbols help reinforce this. There are 8 base game symbols, Jack through Ace on the low side, picture icons on the high. These are comprised of a kite, a bridge, an owl, and the gold frog which is worth 20 times the stake for five. Winning combinations are made up of 3 or more of the same symbol on one of the 25 paylines. The one exception is the frog which only needs 2.

It always pays to check the rules and read the small print before signing contracts and playing slots. Of course, it is easy to skip that step sometimes and dive right in. Gold Money Frog is a reminder of why that isn't such a great idea. Case in point, the RTP is a truly awful 92.31% - 92.96%. Yes, it's a progressive jackpot, but we aren't talking about life-changing sums of money to justify that figure - more on this later. Betting is controlled by altering the number of coins and their value. Overall stakes range from 25 p/c up to $/€50 per spin. Volatility sits on a medium level, and the slot has an almost 1 in 2 hit frequency. Small and steady is the name of the base game here, so you don't need us to tell you the three jackpots are far and away the main event.

Before getting to the jackpots, let's take a look at a couple of the warm-up acts. The first is the wild which substitutes for any of the pay symbols. It also pays out when 2 or more land on a payline. Free Spins are also a highlight and are triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 lantern scatters for 10, 20, or 30 free spins respectively. Like the wild, the scatter symbol pays out when two or more of a kind land. Unlike the base game symbols, a scatter win is applied to the total bet which can be as high as 400 times the stake for five of a kind. During the free spins round, any wins have a x3 multiplier applied to the amount.

To score one of the jackpots you will need to land 3 or more of the Bonus Symbols. This leads to the screen being taken over by a Bonus Wheel that is split into 12 segments - 4 segments contain a coin win (100 max), 4 for the Minor Jackpot, 3 for the Major Jackpot, and 1 leftover for the Super Jackpot. Then, it spins and whatever it lands on is yours. When it comes to average payout amounts, NetEnt estimate figures like €255 on the Minor, €1,860 on the Major, and €35,700 with the Super Jackpot (expected value according to the game sheet). Keeping in mind, it could be higher or lower than that, of course. When jackpots are won, they return to their start-up value of €50, €500, and €5,000 for the Minor, Major, and Super, plus a percentage in contributions that were set aside from previous bets.

Gold Money Frog (NetEnt): Verdict

With most slots, the saying that there is a time and place for everything usually applies. Gold Money Frog is one that manages to defy this. What situation would suit playing Gold Money Frog? No idea. It is hard to think of one good reason to play it. Warning bells start ringing once you discover its diabolical RTP and the game never really recovers. Okay, it has a few progressive jackpots attached which can affect the rate. But still, for the stats on offer, the prizes aren't exactly enormous sums of money. No would complain about nabbing the Super Jackpot, but Mega Moolah level cash this is not.

Even the base game is a let-down. It is populated by standard symbols, boring visuals, and dull gameplay. When it comes to potential during the main game, the best players can hope for is around 2,000 times the stake, but that would be the very extreme and unlikely to ever happen. That amount is expected to come around once every 5.7 billion spins - hardly inspiring stuff. If you absolutely loved the original Super Lucky Frog and feel pangs of nostalgia you could be forgiven for having a crack with the reskin. Other than that, it is hard to think of a single reason why anyone would play Gold Money Frog. Dazzled by the jackpots maybe? Try to resist the urge if that’s the case, like drunk texting an ex late at night you will regret it in the morning.

Bad

NetEnt reskin yet another old slot for the Asian market, and the result is a strong contender for one of the worst slots of the year.
