Greta Goes Wild: Overview
Editor's note: Great Goes Wild was initially titled Heidi Goes Wild, but has been renamed (twice) due to copyright issues.
Lads, deep breath, everyone’s favourite Oktoberfest waitress is back, jigglier than ever. In Great Goes Wild, developer iSoftBet has retained the jolly German atmosphere of a heaving beer hall, as Greta serves up wilds, multiplier wilds, big wins, free spins, and of course, steins.
Oktoberfest, or 'Wies’n' to the locals, needs no introduction. It's one of the world's premier booze-ups, inspiring countless other fests around the world. You just can't beat the original though as a lot of the allure comes from the local German culture itself. As well as the charming waitresses who never stop smiling, is the outstanding beer, sausage, and lederhosen. Hold it all in a historic Bier Haus with some banging Oompah band and what's not to like?
It's this spirit that iSoftBet has tried to bottle in their slot Greta Goes Wild, and for the most part they've done a pretty good job. The visuals are heavy on the wooded decor, there is plenty of bubbling beverages, and Greta is the kind of waitress you order things from even if you're not hungry or thirsty. When the nice warm glow settles in, and the band is in full swing, what more could you want? Oans, zwoa, drei, g’suffa.
Playable from 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin, iSoftBet has taken a simpler approach to the one found in Heidi's Bier Haus. For example, the action happens on a standard 5x3 grid with 10 fixed paylines to land winners on. It means the gameplay is more straight forward then it was previously with a fairly uneventful base game. RTP is bang on 96%, while the high volatility provides a wide range of results capped by a decent potential.
The paytable offers a bunch of recognisable symbols alongside some newer ones, split in to high and low. Lows are a group of paisley patterned 9-A tiles, while the high pays are stalwarts of the beer hall. In ascending order are pretzels, alpine hats, elaborate kegs, the cheerful chap Hans, all topped by the game’s logo. Premium values vary from 5 to 20 times the stake when a line of five of a kind lands. Greta is the wild, substituting for any other symbol except the scatter. She also gets an upgrade during features, let's have a look.
Greta Goes Wild: Features
The minimal features have an excellent way of working together, building off of each other into a bonanza of Greta's and possible wins. The first to cover, the Oh Greta feature, appears at random on any spin. When triggered, Greta bounces on screen to guarantee a bonus or a big win. Big wins are called out whenever a hit of 25x or more occurs.
Want you want to see are the stein bonus scatter symbols which turn up in any position. Getting 3, 4, or 5 in view at the same time rewards you with 10, 12, or 15 free spins respectively. Now, when a Greta wild lands, it will remain fixed in position for the duration of the feature. Better yet, 2 or 3 Greta wilds on the same reel will morph into x2 or x3 wild multipliers respectively.
There is a slight catch, well, more a technicality than a catch really. If 2 or more wild multipliers appear on the same line win, only one will multiply the amount. If the wild multipliers in question have different values, then the highest one applies. Lastly, one or more sticky wild symbols appearing on each of the reels activates 2 extra free spins.
Greta Goes Wild: Verdict
Greta Goes Wild may take place in German beer hall, but the gameplay is closely related to Dead or Alive 2. It does mean the base game has few surprises, other than the odd Oh Greta moment, yet those into simple and intense gaming will appreciate the more streamlined experience.
In spite of the similarities, Greta Goes Wild is nowhere near as potent. Whilst potential has been ramped up to hit 8,000 times the stake, only having one multiplier work its magic per line in free spins is a bit of a let-down. This is because quite a collection of Greta's can build up on the grid during the feature. Having just one wild multiplier at a time does leave a slightly off taste in the mouth. A bit like choking back a can of Bud after downing a stein of Schöfferhofer Weizen.
All up, Greta Goes Wild is an Oktoberfest flavoured romp that has some great moments. There could have been more with say higher value symbols, a modifier during the base game, or letting Greta go wilder during free spins perhaps. Still, in this rather narrow niche, Greta Goes Wild is easily one of the standouts.
Good
Greta Goes Wild won’t blow you away with technical brilliance or visual innovations, but is highly playable thanks to a lethal dose of intensity, charms, and good looks.
