Lion Strike: Slot Overview

Would those early humans who walked out of Africa many moons ago be bemused by the rush of casino game makers flocking back to base their online slots there? A bit of a rhetorical question, but there is no denying the ongoing popularity of these sorts of games. Africa is a huge continent, though; surely there’s more going on there that casino game makers could use than dreamy grassland vistas and pyramids? Ah, well, maybe another time. For this time, players are invited to join Rabcat‘s expedition to another dreamy, grassy patch of Africa in a game with two free spins rounds where reels, rows, and ways grow, plus a Lions Spins feature.

If you’re the sort of traveller who detests visiting the same place twice, then the African wilderness slot genre probably isn’t the one for you. The reason is a good chunk of these sorts of games contain the same stuff – grassy fields, acacia trees, blazing sunsets, hilly bits, and wildlife. Lion Strike has all of this, plus a game logo that brought the Disney mega-hit The Lion King to mind, whether by accident or design, who knows. Still, while there’s nothing new to discover in this picture, Lion Strike is a really nice looking example of this kind of game, heavy on the golden tones till free spins trigger when night descends over the land.

Depending on which of the three game phases is active will determine the layout of the gaming grid. In its basic state, it has 5 reels, 4 rows and 1,024 ways to win. This expands when free spins or Super Free Spins are triggered. Since there is no bonus buy, that will only occur from the base game, where spins can be wagered on from 20 p/c to £/€20 each on any device. Its math model is very highly volatile and comes in three RTP forms – 96.13%, 94.08%, and 92.08%.

Animal lovers may feel drawn to Lion Strike’s paytable because five majestic beasts have been used as the premium pay symbol. These are a leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant, and lion, paying 2-7.5x the bet for five-of-a-kind or 4-20x the bet for six-of-a-kind. Below the animals are 9-A card symbols paying 1-1.5x the bet for five-of-a-kind or 1.5-3x the bet for six-of-a-kind. The other symbols to look out for at various points are wilds, multiplier wilds, and scatters.

Lion Strike: Slot Features

Lions aren’t just the most valuable symbol; they also get their own feature. Should three stacked lion symbols land on the first reel, the Lion Spin feature is activated, where the chance of additional lion symbols landing is increased.

Free Spins

To move from the base game to the first level of the bonus rounds occurs when 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols land, awarding 6, 9 or 12 free spins, respectively. In free spins, wild symbols are added to the reels for free spins, which substitute for all regular pay symbols. An extra row of symbols is also added to the game grid for free spins, increasing ways to win up to 3,125.

Super Free Spins

Landing 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatters during regular free spins awards 3, 6, 9, or 12 Super Free Spins. For Super Free Spins, an extra reel is added to the grid, meaning 15,625 ways are active. Also, multiplier wilds come into play for Super Free Spins, which not only substitute for any pay symbol, but also duplicate all wins involving it.

Lion Strike: Slot Verdict

Rabcat hasn’t exactly been highly prolific of late, so perhaps that might explain why the studio has taken it relatively safe by picking a conventional slot theme and filling it with some straightforward, albeit effective, gaming elements. It’s cautious stuff, but it should be enjoyable if African-themed slots are a particular forte. Graphically, Lion Strike has a noticeably higher-than-average finish, helping lift it to a higher level than it might have been if Rabcat hadn’t been so meticulous with the details.

A similar thing happens with the gameplay, which is on one level simplistic, on another level kind of satisfying when you start tripping through the bonus rounds. There’s a faint Play’n GO or Red Tiger feel to the way players can unlock higher free spins, gaining access to more ways, rows, and reels, not to mention wilds and multiplier wilds. Doing things this way does leave the base game pretty bare, though, especially if the glow produced by the visuals wears off after a while. Lions Spins are included, but they weren’t super common, and it’s not the same as, say, the feature from Pragmatic Play‘s Great Rhino/Great Rhino Deluxe games, which could stack rhino symbols during respins. Potential doesn’t suffer as a result, as Lion Strike packs a respectable top win number of 14,580x the bet.

All in all, Lion Strike is a well-made game, though one which doesn’t do anything unmissable per se. If you’re utterly benumbed by the thought of another one of these sorts of games, Lion Strike is unlikely to change your mind. However, when factoring in the sizable potential with the excellent artwork and the building on top of each other quality of the two free spins rounds, proponents of African nature slots have a decent alternative on their hands.

Lion Strike might not set the world ablaze with terrifying innovation, but it’s quite a well-made game all the same.
