Megaways Respin: Overview
Developer Games Inc’s second Megaways slot might be more conventional then their first, Joker Megaways, but it possesses a unique feature for this type of game. While the previous Megaways release was aimed at the fruit slot segment of the market, Megaways Respin’s appeal is even more granular. Players who appreciate respin features such as Microgaming’s Hyperspins will be over the moon, others might take a little more persuading.
Despite the nice look, it was a little hard to catch Megaways Respin’s vibe at first. There’s a Las Vegas thing going on, thanks to the downtown strip visuals, a ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ style sign, and the Stratosphere Casino in the distance. But due to an animated robot slot during free spins, and the generally light touch, this is not exactly Sin City. It feels cleaner, less edgy, less exciting. The audio gives the game a dose of personality, thanks to a jazzy warm-up drummer playing over an ambient crowd noise. Despite the low-level hum of the crowd, it’s possibly the liveliest aspect of Megaways Respin.
Games Inc’s previous Megaways slot showed that the developer isn’t afraid of toying with the layout. Joker Megaways had just three reels, yet turned out to be quite entertaining. Megaways Respin is more orthodox. For one, it uses the more common 6 reel setup displaying 2 to 7 symbols on each. Win ways alternate on every spin from 64, up to 117,649. More controversially for some is that the cascade functionality has been removed - in both the base and bonus game. Playable from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, the game possesses medium to high volatility, while boasting a better than average RTP of 96.46%.
Games Inc has chosen to display symbols in coins which look incredible until divided by 100 to calculate their relative value. At the top of the pile is the diamond symbol which is worth 50 times the stake for 6 of a kind. Diamonds payout on two of a kinds while everything else needs at least three, from left to right on the reels. The remaining group includes red gems, green gems, blue, gems, and A-9 royals. A silver wild helps players out by substituting for anything except the Bonus scatter.
Megaways Respin: Features
A couple of features help brighten the mood including respins, free spins, and a bonus buy. None are particularly original per se, but on a Megaways slot this type of respin is rather new.
Respins are available after any base game spin whether it was a winner or not. Once any rewards have been paid, players may choose to spin any of the reels again. This is done one at a time. Respins also have a cost of course, which is calculated by what the possible outcome might be. For example, if you have red gems only on reels 1 and 2, then reel three will cost a lot more to respin than reel 6.
Also, if you respin a reel, it must turn up a new wining symbol to result in a payout. For example, if you have already won from four tens on reels 1-4, then hit respin on reel 5 but nothing useful appears, then you won’t get paid again for the original combo. Of course, if you get another 10 or a wild you will. Keep in mind respins are not available if autoplay is switched on.
Another situation where respins are not available is during free spins. These are triggered when 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols land anywhere in view to award 15, 20, or 25 free spins respectively. The benefit during free spins is the Win Multiplier. As the reels spin, a little mini-slot droid is spun. If the mini-slot displays one or more numbers, these are added to the win multiplier. Each win is multiplied by the number shown, which does not reset between spins. Three or more scatters will retrigger the feature - without limits.
Free spins also provide a 10x guarantee. If players do not win 10x their stake, what they have won is held, and the feature played over again from the start.
The final feature, for those able to access such things, is the feature buy option. For the sum of 100 times the stake, players can bypass the base game by landing at least 4 free spins scatters on the next spin. Interestingly, when that happens, only scatters appear alongside blank metallic symbols, so it is not possible to pick up any cheeky side wins in the process.
Megaways Respin: Verdict
Megaways Respin is another example of Games Inc bravely playing with the traditional Megaways formula. Not everyone will go for it, of course, but the respin function can be entertaining when it goes your way. A warm feeling of satisfaction washes over you when you take a dud result, and turn it into something special.
It’s easy to get carried away, though. When all you need is just one more symbol to hit a great combo, you can find yourself endlessly banging away on the respin button while it stubbornly refuses to show. It can turn into a pretty expensive loop if you’re not keeping a watchful eye on things.
Foregoing cascades is a daring move though there is usually a trade-off. iSoftBet made the same decision recently in Morgana Megaways, offering a symbol collection feature as well as locked Megaways instead to good effect. You can see why Games Inc did this since they employed respins instead, but it may turn some people off as it can deaden the base game to a degree.
All up, Megaways Respin is a competent slot, if a little low on huge thrills. Its cheerful atmosphere makes it more like brunch at the Bouchon in The Venetian than a night at The MGM Grand’s Hakkasan. The unique selling proposition is its respin feature, so if they aren’t your thing, then there is little to no other reason to give the game a crack.
Megaways Respin proves once again how versatile Megaways can be in a slot that will delight players who go for individual respin mechanics.
