Monsters of Rock Megaways (Storm Gaming): Overview

Deadset on taking the leap from land-based casino to the virtual world of iGaming, Storm Gaming now rolls out a second Megaways slot in quick succession. Established in 2003, this Wolverhampton based developer has over 5,000 digital kiosks installed in more than 12 different countries and is now ready to take online punters by storm (no pun intended) as well. Their first Megaways offering, Magic Merlin Megaways, was more of a gust, sadly, as the studio choose to play it safe by parroting Bonanza. It wasn't bad by any means, but it really didn't add anything new to the table, and there was little to set it apart from other Megaways manufacturers. So, let's take a look at their second pursuit to see how it fairs.

Booting up Monsters of Rock Megaways, your reality instantly shifts as you're taken from the quiet comfort of your home and thrown straight into a loud rock concert. The music, which to us sounds like something that could have been recorded by Oasis was, as it turns out, provided by a Shropshire based band called Secret Elephant - nice work lads!

So, what about the basics then? Well, Monsters of Rock Megaways is built on the Bonanza template which means it utilizes a setup of 6 reels along with a horizontal reel above the main reel set that together can produce up to 117,649 ways to win. Designed in the html5 format, the game is available across all compatible devices from between 0.20 and $/€100 per spin and comes with both new and old features. In the main game, there's a Pick Me feature available that will reveal instant multiplier cash prizes. Also in the main game, a High Voltage feature may randomly come into play to remove all royal values in view. Unsurprisingly, there's also the customary free spins round with an unlimited win multiplier.

With cheering crowds, loud rock music, and flashing lights on the agenda, Monsters of Rock Megaways can only be described as the gambling world's answer to Guitar Hero. Set on a stage, you'll see a wall of strobes in the background as well as stage lights and two giant speaker stacks on both sides of the reels. Visually, it passes approval, but it's not quite as smooth-looking and refined as many of the other Megaways slots we've seen. The picture symbols have some sort of grainy quality to them that make them look almost like a bunch of gifs (the first game suffered from the same issue), and they just don't look that great in all honesty.

By the looks of things, the designers set out to create a parody of rock stars, but what's up with the green guy? Is that a hybrid between a man and a larva? And speaking of symbols, spinning on the reels you will see J to K royal values set against speaker cabinet grills alongside more rewarding band members. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a bass player in this band, but three guitarists; the green larva guy, a Slash lookalike, a Gene Simmons wannabe, and a blonde guy going for the Axl Rose look. The most rewarding, however, is the Monsters of Rock logo, giving you 50 times your stake for six across a full payline. The flaming LCD screen is the wild and only appears on the extra top row above reels 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Monsters of Rock Megaways (Storm Gaming): Features

Free spins feature

Like most Megaways slots, Monsters of Rock Megaways is played using a Chain Reaction feature where every winning symbol forms part of a reaction and is replaced by symbols droppings down from above. As a side-note, when the symbols drop, they make this bouncing effect that adds a nice touch to the game.

Possibly inspired by Blueprint Gaming, Mystery Symbols (or cards as they call them here) have been included this time around. Represented by amplifiers stacked on top of each other, every instance of this symbol appearing on the reels will transform into winning symbols.

There's also a Pick Me feature which comes into play when you land 3 or more LP records anywhere in view. When activated, you get to choose one of three album covers to reveal a multiplier cash prize. Furthermore, a High Voltage feature may activate randomly on any spin to remove all lower-value symbols in view.

The encore, or the Free Spins feature if you will, is played when you land 4, 5, or 6 Flying-V guitar scatter symbols anywhere in view - this will give you 12, 17, or 22 free spins respectively. As per usual, it's played with an unlimited win multiplier that increases by 1x with every win reaction. Aside from the win multiplier, the Mystery Symbols and High Voltage features remain in play here as well. Moreover, the free spins can be retriggered - 3 or 4 scatters appearing on the top row will add another 5 or 10 free spins to your total spin count.

Monsters of Rock Megaways (Storm Gaming): Verdict

Though not quite as much of a step forward as we had hoped for, Monsters of Rock Megaways is more than just a sideways step for Storm Gaming. The added extras undoubtedly make it more fun to play than its sibling slot Magic Merlin Megaways, and although the visuals need some more work, it still manages to grab hold of you with its vibrant graphics and action-packed presentation.

With that said, it's our strong conviction that Storm Gaming needs to try a more bold approach and come up with something far more original if they ever wish to become a serious competitor as, for right now, they're doing exactly what other developers have been doing with the Megaways engine for years already. What we're trying to say is that, somehow, Storm Gaming must think of a way to develop more of a unique personality.

Medium to high variance, the max win is currently unknown but should be similar to other Megaways slots. Do note, however, that it comes with a max cap of $250,000, which means you'll "only" be able to reach 2,500 times your stake at max bet.

Fair

Even though it’s not quite up to prevailing standards, Monsters of Rock Megaways hits close enough to the mark to offer some energetic and flashy thrills.
