Queen of Hearts Megaways: Overview
Developer iSoftBet extends their Twisted Tales series with a trip through Lewis Carrol’s unpredictable world in Queen of Hearts Megaways. Much like Wonderland, Queen of Hearts Megaways is brimming with life, colour, and features. While not much is new, the interplay between bonus games has an interesting twist, and the overall experience is a highly polished one.
The madcap action takes place over 6 reels in the rich environment of the Queen of Hearts’ kingdom. Her palace can be seen over the back, while the entrance to her garden frames the slot. The soundtrack is a standout too adding the final touch to another sensory feast from iSoftBet.
Players can spin Queen of Hearts Megaways on any device from mobile to desktop, by selecting bets of 20 p/c to £/€20. Déjà vu sets in when inspecting the math model, which produces an RTP of 96.11%, or 96.86% when the bonus buy is selected. As expected, the volatility is quite high although no rating is available from iSoftBet for us to share.
With each spin, 2-7 symbols appear on each reel, the number varying each time. So do win ways, up to 117,649 when the reels are at max capacity. Winning requires landing three or more matching symbols left to right from the first reel onwards. When this happens, the cascade feature is triggered, so multiple hits from a single spin are possible in Queen of Hearts.
Royal symbols make a lot of sense since the Queen of Hearts is closely related to them. We get 9 – A symbols on the lower end of the paytable followed by a selection of characters from the classic tale. In ascending order are the rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and the King worth 2.5 to 10 times the stake. The Queen is not only worth a lot more at 50x for a line of six, but she also pays out when just two of a kind land. Finally, helping pull in wins is the wild which appears on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5. It has no value of its own, but substitutes for any other pay symbol to create combinations.
Queen of Hearts Megaways: Features
Queen of Hearts comes packed with features, though little is especially new. Extras include cascades, Max Megaways, mystery symbols, two bonus games, and the Queen of Hearts Bet.
On any paid spin, there is a chance the Max Megaways modifier is triggered. The name of the feature will flash up to warn players what is about to happen, forcing the reels to display the full 117,649 Megaways as a result.
On any spin, including free spins, a number of grinning Cheshire Cat mystery symbols may randomly land. Mystery symbols turn into the same matching symbol – anything but the wild or bonus symbols.
The first of the bonus games are the Queen of Hearts Respins. Landing 5 or more Cash Respins symbols in a sequence triggers the feature. The round starts with 3 respins where only Cash Respin symbols may land. When one does, it resets the respins back to 3. This game ends when the screen is full of Cash Respin symbols or respins run to zero. In either case, all values in view are added up and multiplied against the total bet.
The most intriguing point is that Queen of Hearts Respins can be triggered from free spins. When this happens, the active win multiplier is carried over to respins, multiplying all Cash Respin Symbols for a bigger win.
Landing at least 3 bonus symbols triggers 12 free spins. Any more than 3 bonus symbols in view add 5 free spins each, up to 27 at the maximum. During free spins, an unlimited win multiplier starting at x1 is active, increasing by +1 after every cascade. Should players win less than 10x the stake from free spins, the Royal Guarantee is triggered awarding five more free spins. This may happen only once.
The final feature is the Queen of Hearts Bet. For the cost of 100x the stake, players spin a wheel that awards Queen of Hearts Free Spins or Queen of Hearts Respins. There is a 50/50 chance either of them will be triggered.
Queen of Hearts Megaways: Verdict
After Morgana Megaways, the previous slot in the Twisted Tales series, Queen of Hearts is a slight let down. There is nothing wrong with it as such, the Queen provides a solid bit of Megaways gaming, with attractive graphics and effects thrown in. Where it comes up short is in the originality stakes. Morgana had that unique collection system going on in free spins which made it a must-see for Megaways enthusiasts. Queen of Hearts doesn’t have such an unmissable feel to it. The potential standout here is triggering Queen of Hearts Respins from free spins and the resulting win multiplier boost.
What also helps save the game is the exceptional production values. Queen of Hearts looks great and sounds even better. iSoftBet have proven their ability to create striking Megaways slots, and Queen of Hearts is up there with the best of them. Wonderland is a completely over the top world, and iSoftBet has recaptured the spirit well. On a side note, the math model coughs up the same numbers in Majestic Megaways and Shining King, though you’d hardly call them clones.
In some ways, Queen of Hearts’ is like a TV clip show, showing highlights from a bunch of past episodes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; clip shows can be quite entertaining. You get to see how the characters have evolved, adding depth to the current story. Yet, they more often than not feel like filler. Queen of Hearts avoids this to an extent, partly due to the bonus game tweaks. That plus the nice visuals make Queen of Hearts a fun slot, but it’d be nice to see something a bit more radical in the next Twisted Tales slot.
You won’t come across a whole lot that’s new in Queen of Hearts Megaways, but its high build quality and enjoyable gaming shine through making it a decent Megaways choice.
