Reel Desire: Slot Overview

Disco is one of those eras that seems to have died pretty quickly at the time, yet somehow it has clung on in one form or another ever since. It rears up regularly in pop culture, including slots, to varying degrees of success. One which did hit it big through a combination of red hot features and reckless attitude was Big Time Gaming's hit Danger! High Voltage. Not that it's an overly original idea, but just like most industries, where you find success you find imitators. Flaunting the line is Yggdrasil Gaming's disco-themed slot Reel Desire.

In another plot twist, Reel Desire bears some strong resemblance to All41 Studios' release Electric Avenue which in turn happens to be a clone of, well, Danger! High Voltage. Both have gone for the neon 80s thing, though Yggdrasil has set theirs inside the Reel Desire night club. A 5-reel, 1,024 win way action area props up a towering DJ booth, while hearts, kisses, and love signs adorn the background in glowing neon light. Disco was all about the music, not to mention platform shoes, medallions, open chested shirts and outrageous moves. To this end, Reel Desire's soundtrack has a decent foot-tapping quality to it. Yggdrasil paint some of the prettiest slots you'll see, so while Reel Desire doesn't attain that level, it's definitely not a bad looker.

Beneath the looks, Reel Desire possesses some desirable stats, possibly better suited for harder-edged gamblers or those chasing down massive wins. For one, volatility is high, paired with a hit rate of 25.7%, and massive potential. Both phases of the game were tempered by features that seemed strategically placed to minimise returns much of the time, yet single spin wins can be insane as can be seen in our video. The RTP mirrors the unofficial slot average of 96% which should suit most players, as will stake selections, ranging from 25 p/c to $/€75 per spin. This being the democratic pastime of disco, where we're all supposedly equal on the dance floor, any device can be used to relive the glory days.

Symbols are led by a bunch of neon-lit card suits, diamonds, clubs, spades, and hearts, textured like an LP record, followed by shades, earrings, hi-top shoes, and a Casio wristwatch which have made a comeback of late. The two high pay symbols are a young Don Johnson wannabe and a fly girl type, worth 16-20 times the stake for five of a kind. Wilds help in this endeavour, but they are linked to a couple of features so let's look at them next.

Reel Desire: Slot Features

While the theme brings back memories of Electric Avenue, the features take it back even further to the slot All41 based theirs on. Here we find Double Wilds, Reel Desire, and two Free Spins games.

The cassette tape symbol is the wild, appearing on all reels to replace any pay symbol to make a winning combination. At any moment in the base game, a Double Wild may appear on reels 2, 3, or 4. This is a wild possessing an x2 multiplier. These symbols are sticky and trigger a respin when they land.

Also occurring only in the base game is the Reel Desire feature. A homage to the Wild Desire feature found in Microgaming's legendary Immortal Romance slot, it turns 1 to 5 reels completely wild when randomly triggered.

The final symbol on the paytable is the ghetto blaster scatter symbol. When 3 or more are in view, 10 free spins are awarded. If four or five land, an extra prize of 50x or 500x the bet is added on top. Players then choose one of 2 free spins modes. One is Sticky Wilds where all wild symbols stay sticky for the duration of the free spins session. Or, Multipliers, where each winning spin increases a win multiplier by +1. Free spins can be retriggered in the bonus game, in the same way as they are in the base.

Reel Desire: Slot Verdict

Let's just say it, if Danger! High Voltage and Electric Avenue hooked up; their illegitimate love child would strongly resemble Reel Desire. All three share a similar vibe, aiming for that 70s/80s disco thing. Then there are features, which again are suspiciously similar - full reel wilds, dual option free spins with either sticky wilds or multipliers. The three games might not be exactly the same, and Reel Desire isn't as blatant a copy as Electric Avenue was. For instance, you get a progressive win multiplier in place of High Voltage Wilds, yet in essence, they are pretty darn close.

Yggdrasil's game doesn't have the outrageous attitude of Danger! High Voltage, but if it's absolute biggest wins you're after then you'd have to call it for Reel Desire. Scoring a full-screen of wilds/premiums in Reel Desire means wins of up to 20,480x the bet are possible. Keeping in mind this is off a single spin, and knowing it could happen at any time in the base game adds a level of tension. Even when not filling all five reels, the Reel Desire feature can stoke decent wins, as can Double Wilds on occasion.

Unfortunately, the hit frequency for free spins was not available, which could be interesting because they did take their sweet time to trigger. Once in, the bonus games weren’t quite as intense as Danger! High Voltage’s can be. The progressive multiplier performs as well as you'd expect this type of feature to, though it doesn't match the adrenaline found in High Voltage free spins.

So, yeah, Reel Desire comes off as an imitation of previous games, yet at the end of the day, it works out pretty well for players. Disco slot options have deepened, and Reel Desire does have a lot of good things to commend it. Stats are positive, the potential is massive, plus the gameplay gets some enjoyable grooves on. Like disco, or trends in general, where one leads others inevitably follow.

Great

While you won’t see its name on a blimp, a couple of well-proven features and great vibes make Reel Desire a sure bet if you want to get your slot session bumpin’.
