Riches of Robin (Play'n GO): Overview
Everyone’s favourite hooded man is back to rob the rich and share the wealth with the needy. It’s a popular theme, and Robin Hood constantly pops back up from time to time. We even got a female version from Bally recently called Lady Robin Hood. It’s one of those endearing tales that has stood the test of time – good guy takes money from bad people and gives it to good people. Acts of charity like that in the Middle Ages could mean the difference between life and death. Play'n GO took on the fantastical past with The Sword and the Grail not long ago which was a cracking take on the Arthurian legends. Now it’s Robin Hood’s turn on the reels, and the question is, will it be as successful?
Officially, the game comes with 15 reels laid out in 5 columns and 3 rows. Each position, or tile if you will, spins independently, a concept similar to that seen in Double Lucky Line from Just For The Win. In practice, it boils down to a 5x3 slot with 20 fixed paylines. Wannabe knights select bets from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin – manual or auto. Wins come from landing 3 or more similar symbols in a combination while waiting for features to drop of which there are several. RTP swings from a chivalrous 96.65% to a dastardly 94.43% or even lower. This can be adjusted according to the operator’s whims, so make sure to double-check the setting before piling in coins. Volatility has been given a 10 rating which is Play'n GO’s highest level so prepare for some all or nothing sessions. With a solid potential up for grabs, this stat will either be a good or bad thing.
Graphically the game is a bit of a knock out with bright symbols full of personality bursting off the reels. The background is set in ‘ye olde’ Nottingham. Spires poke out above reels and dwellings, with Sherwood Forest off in the distance. The soundtrack is suitably Middle-Aged, and the audio/visual effect is of a high standard. When it comes to symbols, there are 9 regulars joined by several special symbols. The low pay ones start with card suits - diamonds, hearts, clubs, and spades fashioned in a stone and gem design. The premiums are made up of five famous characters from the story. We get Friar Tuck, Alan A Dale, Little John, King Richard and Maid Marian who is worth the most at 20 times the stake for five across a full payline. Robin Hood, who looks strikingly similar to Cary Elwes in Mel Brooks comedy hit Robin Hood: Men in Tights, is wild and substitutes for any regular pay symbol. He too is worth 20 times the stake for a five of a kind combination.
Riches of Robin (Play'n GO): Features
When it comes to features, Riches of Robin has several quivers in its bow such as free spins, a Heist Respins bonus, and Quick Hit feature.
The Quick Hit feature revolves around money bags which are instant prize symbols. If a spin occurs which does not have a winner, then the Quick Hit may be triggered. Here, instant prize symbols on any reel will be awarded. Each money bag can contain prizes of 20x, 100x, or 1,000x the bet.
If four money bags are in view on the reels then they trigger the Heist Respins feature. This feature starts with 3 respins and money bags are the only symbols that can appear on the reels. When a money bag lands, it resets spins back to 3. The feature ends when respins run to zero, or the reels are filled with Money Bags. Either way, all instant prizes get totaled up and paid out at the end.
The target symbol is the scatter which only appears on the middle row of columns 2 and 4. Just two are needed to trigger the Free Spins bonus round. There is no standard number of spins. Instead, a random amount is awarded that could be 8, 10, 12, 14, or 20 free spins. There is also a random multiplier of x2, x3, x4, or x5 applied to all wins during the bonus round. The Heist Respins, as well as the Quick Hit, can still be triggered during free spins. Not just that, but if 2 scatters land they award 2 more free spins and increase the multiplier by +1. If the multiplier reaches x10, then each new retrigger awards 4 more free spins.
Players are technically able to trigger Heist Respins and Free spins on the same spin. If this happens, then Heist Respins are played first, followed by a round of free spins.
Riches of Robin (Play'n GO): Verdict
Play'n GO has done a great job of bringing the Robin Hood story to life through attractive graphics and amiable characters used for symbols. Throw in some great features and the result is a very playable slot. The free spins round is a highlight, but plenty can still happen during the base game to keep players on their toes. After Free spins, the standout is the Quick Hit which can drop that 1,000x prize at any moment, with Heist Respins a close second.
What is more, during free spins, a full grid of wilds and Marian symbols, along with the 10x multiplier will result in a payout of 4,000 times the stake from a single spin. Max payouts are capped at a respectable 10,000 times the stake which matches what we got with The Sword and the Grail.
Overall, Riches of Robin hasn’t quite pushed The Sword and the Grail off the podium as Play'n GO’s best fantasy-themed slot of the year. But, that doesn’t stop it from being a highly entertaining slot. Riches of Robin provides plenty of excitement during base and bonus games, high volatility and potential, all bundled up in an appealing wrapper. It is certainly one of the better Robin Hood themed slots out there.
Riches of Robin doesn’t shatter online slot conventions, but it has a couple of fun ideas that set it apart from the pack.
