Sheriff's Gold Megaways: Slot Overview

Saddle up, load up, gussy up, do whatever you have to up, to get in the mood for some Western-themed action in an online slot from iSoftBet called Sheriff's Gold Megaways. Mark Twain might have said, 'history never repeats,' but slots kinda do sometimes. Sheriff's Gold Megaways is a classic example, being almost exactly the same as iSoftBet's 2020 release Western Gold Megaways. Other than the title change, there really isn't much here that is in any way different from before. If you can't get enough dusty one-horse towns hosting hold 'n win games, prepare to get your mosey on.

Sheriff's Gold Megaways is played outside on the street between Sons Hotel and the Sheriff's office while dust blows past about as fast as the clouds do in the upper portions of the sky. The audio effects are as excellent as ever, slinging together deadly serious, twanging Western music with the clip-clopping of horse hooves and the bleak calling of birds. Like iSoftBet's motto, it's 'serious fun', giving the game a ton more depth than a lesser tune would have. The sights and sounds combine to create a strong frontier atmos, and it's easy to see why developers return to this theme so regularly.

Although, when they do return, it's usually in a new game or at least a reskin. Since Sheriff's Gold Megaways is neither of those things, it retains the same list of stats as it had under the previous name. That is a medium-high math model and a theoretical return to player value of 95.98%. This one doesn't change with the bonus buy since there wasn't one this time around. In other words, players pick bets of 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin, hit play, and see where the chips may land.

Hitting play sets the 6 reel game grid in motion where each reel lands anywhere from 2 to 7 symbols each. The varying number of symbols creates a varying number of ways to win, reaching a maximum of 117,649. Winning ways in the base game start a cascade. The first part of the cascade is the removal of all winning symbols from the grid, allowing symbols on the reels to fall down and fill the gaps. If a new winning way is created after the symbol drop, the cascade sequence starts again – ending when no new win hits.

Landing matching symbols from the first reel onwards on consecutive columns creates winning ways. At least three are needed for all symbols except the top premium, which pays out for two of a kind. This is the pistol, followed by a hat, hip flask, and stirrup as the high pays, then A down to 9 as the low pays. A winning combo of six symbols pays 0.5-1.5x the bet for the royals or 2 to 25 times the stake for the higher value tiles. Appearing on reels 2 to 5 is the wild symbol, able to replace any pay symbols to complete ways wins.

Sheriff's Gold Megaways: Slot Features

Same looks, same stats, and well, same features as well, really. For this part of the review, we're going to mosey on through a couple of base game modifiers, and Sheriff's Gold Cash Respins.

Base Game Modifiers

On any paid spin, modifiers can randomly trigger. One is Max Megaways, which causes the reels to fill with symbols making the maximum 117,649 ways to win appear. Another helpful modifier is the Bonus Add, which creates the chance of triggering Sheriff's Gold Cash Respins, though there is no guarantee the bonus will be awarded.

Sheriff's Gold Cash Respins

Landing 5 or more scatters in the base game triggers the Sheriff's Gold Cash Respins feature. The triggering symbols remain locked in place while all other symbols fade away, and 3 repsins are awarded. Only scatters or blanks can land during the feature. New landed scatters lock in place and reset the respin count back to 3. Scatters either display a bet multiplier or Mini, Major, or Mega jackpot symbols; the latter three being worth 10x, 25x, or 50x the bet, respectively. Moreover, if a reel gets filled with locked symbols, a multiplier is generated, which is applied to all prize values on the respective reel. At the end of the round, all scatter values in view are tallied up and awarded.

Sheriff's Gold Megaways: Slot Verdict

There's taking shortcuts to get to the finish line early, then there's doing what iSoftBet has done and changing one word in a game title, then palming it off as something new-ish. Sheriff's Gold Megaways is so peculiar there must be some legal, technical, or jurisdictional reason why it has been made. Even so, was it really worth it? Even more importantly, is it going to spark a slew of 'new' releases where the only 'new' bit is a word or two in the title? Probably not, hopefully not. Full disclosure, as well as the 'Western' to 'Sheriff's' switcharoo, Sheriff's Gold Megaways, didn't ship with a bonus buy. Perhaps that was what prompted the re-release? Who knows, it's a Western mystery up there with what happened to Etta Place, the lesser-known companion of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Even Etta's real name is a matter of speculation.

Putting aside the questions for a moment, let's deal with what we do know. One thing is that Sheriff's Gold Megaways was every bit as good as the previous game, though since it's identical in virtually all ways, it would be strange if it wasn't. The dense Western atmosphere is enjoyable, it isn't as grim as something like Dead or Alive 2 or Tombstone RIP, but it does a good job of drawing players into a bleak world where anything goes. As before, the three Mini, Major, or Mega values are pretty feeble and pale in comparison to what was available in the progenitor slot Aztec Gold Megaways. This doesn't stop Sheriff's Gold Megaways from boasting an impressive max win, though, as Western Gold Megaways came with a tag of 12,000x the bet.

As the sun draws down over the dusty plain and wolves begin to howl, our time with Sheriff's Gold Megaways also comes to an end. In an industry rife with clones and copies, reskins and remakes, Sheriff's Gold Megaways still managed to surprise with how little differed between it and its sibling.

Every bit of Sheriff’s Gold Megaways is as playable as its predecessor; in fact, it’s almost every bit the same apart from a name change, and an absence of bonus buy.
