Super Dice Megaways: Slot Overview

When or where dice were invented is hotly contested between the ancient Greeks, Chinese, and Mesopotamians. Why don’t we agree they’ve been around for a while, and using them to gamble is probably just as old. They’re certainly a common sight on the reels, but Super Dice Megaways must be the first time they’ve been so extensively used with the Megaways game engine. Despite the somewhat original concept, developer Stakelogic has more or less copied one of its previous slot, Super Wild Megaways, swapping its fruity symbols for dice.

Super Dice Megaways goes for the physical slot approach that has popped up in a bunch Stakelogic games now. The game area sits in the middle of a land-based casino, while banks of other games lie blurred in the distance. It’s a decent enough image, although the impact lessened being a fairly common scene used in fruit slots. Stakelogic has gone all out old-school, matching the physical look with classic arcade sound effects as symbols land and winners hit. Overall, it’s an okay look, though not a patch on ReelPlay’s Joker Super Reels if realism is what you are after.

The game can be played on any device, offering stakes from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin. RTP is fine on 96.06%, while volatility hovers on the medium/high spectrum. Stakelogic has used a standard Megaways setup meaning 6 main reels holding 2-7 symbols each, plus a 4 position reel running horizontally along the top. Every spin displays a different number of symbols, hence a different number of win ways, up to 117,649 at the most. The paytable mentions something about more pay ways than you can dream of, but this is a standard amount for most Megaways games.

Winning means landing matching symbols from the leftmost reel onwards, in any row. Three of a kind is needed for all symbols, except the top premium which only needs two of a kind to payout. It’s all dice as the regular symbols, such as standard 1-6 sided dice for the low pays, then 3, 4, 5 and 6 in Chinese characters as the premiums. High pay values start at 2 times the bet, rising to 50x for the most profitable. The wild cube, also shaped like a die, substitutes for all other symbols except the two scatters – Mystery and Free Spins.

Super Dice Megaways: Slot Features

Super Dice Megaways - free spins

A cascade mechanism is at the core of the gameplay here as is typical of many Megaways slots - every win triggers a cascade, clearing winning symbols from the board. Existing symbols drop down to fill the free spaces, and new symbols fall from above to take up the rest. This mechanic can create multiple wins from the same spin as cascades continue to occur as long as new wins land.

The blue gold question mark (?) is the Scatter Mystery Symbol which lands on any reel - 3 or more during the base game dole out prizes like so:

  • 3 scatters award a mystery prize of 2x – 50x the bet.
  • 4 scatters award a mystery prize of 4x – 100x the bet.
  • 5 scatters award a mystery prize of 10x – 200x the bet.
  • 6+ scatters award a mystery prize of 40x – 500x the bet.

Next is free spins, triggered when 4 or more scatter symbols are in view at the end of a cascade sequence - 12 free spins are awarded, plus 5 more for each extra scatter symbol on the reels. While the feature is underway, landing 3 or 4 scatter symbols adds 5 or 10 free spins to the balance, respectively.

Also during free spins, a win multiplier comes into play, beginning at x1. Each cascade increases the level of the multiplier by +1. Another free spins rule is when Scatter Mystery Symbols land, their reward is fixed. So 3, 4, 5, or 6+ on the grid are guaranteed to award 10x, 25x, 50x, or 200x the bet respectively.

The last feature is the gamble option, ever-present in Stakelogic’s slots. It is available after main game wins and sometimes after free spins, depending on how much you’ve won. Selecting ‘Collect’ banks the win, or hitting ‘Gamble’ rolls the feature. Players then choose heads or tails to double or nothing their winnings - up to 5 times, or until the win cap is reached. The good thing is this feature can be entirely deactivated if you’re really not keen.

Super Dice Megaways: Slot Verdict

The quick capsule review is that Super Dice Megaways is basically Super Wild Megaways, just with dice rather than fruit. The features and stats are pretty much the same, though Super Dice might not have such a broad appeal as the fruit-filled Super Wild.

There are several things it does to either annoy or entertain the heck out of you. First is the visual presentation, which is convincing enough for those into the cabinet simulator effect. Most of these retro Stakelogic slots have a similar look you either like or you don't – Runner Runner Megaways being another example. The same can be said for the 8-bit sounds. They’re either a nostalgic trip back to an earlier era of gaming, or a primitive irritation. Constantly staring at dice gets tiresome too. There isn’t a whole lot of variety when it comes to symbols.

As for the gameplay, it can be pretty unexciting and demoralizing if you don’t appreciate the look. Occasionally, Mystery Scatter Symbols pop up with a payout; even less frequent are free spins. So, for most of the time, you are staring at dice, in two languages, bleeping away mostly low value wins. Sure, the dice do have different amounts of dots and colours, but they are quite samey. It can feel like you’re just staring at a bunch of cubes, which is essentially the case. The bigger the number, the bigger the win, yet they all seem alike after a while, unless you are consciously keeping track of wins.

Super Dice Megaways is about as good as it gets, for this sort of thing. That is, a classically presented, dice game using the Megaways engine. A niche so narrow, this is about the only slot perched on it. If it all sounds appealing, prepare to be wowed; otherwise, it’s a less enticing prospect.

Fair

The Megaways engine deliver some excitement, but the concept loses its way with unimaginative gameplay and dull presentation.
