Time Travel Tigers (Yggdrasil Gaming): Overview

Here's another confusing looking Yggdrasil slot. Thankfully, it's not as complicated as Baron Samedi that we reviewed yesterday despite the appearance. In short, there is nothing really going on in the main game, so basically you are left chasing the free spins feature which comes in four versions with their own unique features.

Time Travel Tigers is a charming game, but from a gambler's point of view, there are some serious flaws as you will see. The game centres around the striped character Dr Tigerstein and his time machine. Triggering the free spins rips the fabric of time-space continuum and randomly takes you to one of four eras - prehistoric era, Ancient Egypt, medieval Europa or into the distant future.

Time Travel Tigers comes with 5 reels and 4 rows, but only 25 paylines. It is an unusual setup, especially these days with the increasing number of win ways, and one we really can't see the point of. Despite the large reel set, the win-ways are remarkably limited. Furthermore, the absence of fully stacked symbols means most wins are limited to one line hits.

Time Travel Tigers may be a particularly good choice for low-rollers as it takes bets starting at €0.05 which is quite unusual, especially when it comes to Yggdrasil where usually the bets will start at €0.25. The 96.3% RTP is somewhat standard and as always with Yggdrasil within the acceptable range which is a positive thing they got going for them.

When it comes to variance, it's a bit hard to say for sure, and Yggdrasil themselves have not categorised it. It definitely doesn't appear to behave like a low variance game despite the low potential, and starting with a demo balance of €11,000 playing with €25 bets, at €4,000 we still hadn't triggered the bonus and simply gave up.

As we've come to expect with Yggdrasil, the visuals are outstanding. There are all sorts of subtle animations that can be observed in the background - swinging pendulums, flashing light-bulbs and cogwheels turning. The reels themselves are set within what appears to be a time machine with Dr Tigerstein himself standing to the left, taking a glance at his pocket watch should you forget to spin the reels.

All in all, there are 9 regular symbols included here. The 4 low-value symbols are represented by the usual card suit symbols and, as expected, are worth next to nothing. The premiums, interestingly, represents the various historical eras and come in the form of zap guns, potion bottles, shields, Egyptian scarabs and prehistoric tools, the latter being the most lucrative giving you 6 times the stake for 5 across a payline. The wild symbol substitutes for all other symbols bar the scatter.

From what we could tell, the low-value symbols can appear in stacks of 3 while the premiums can appear 2 symbols high. There is minimal potential in the main game, almost none to be quite frank, so triggering the free spins is an absolute must if you want to have a chance of landing anything decent.

Time Travel Tigers (Yggdrasil Gaming): Features

Free spins, Egyptian Era feature

Three or more scatters will trigger the free spins mode and randomly send Dr Tigerstein (and you) to a randomly chosen era (free spins feature). There are 4 different features:

  • Egyptian era - gives you 1 to 20 diagonal wilds every spin + x4 multiplier on every winning spin. 3 or more scatters trigger 6, 12 or 18 free spins respectively.
  • Medieval era - gives you 4 to 20 cluster wilds every spin + x3 multiplier on every winning spin. 3 or more scatters trigger 7, 14 or 25 free spins respectively.
  • Prehistoric era - gives you 1 to 20 adjacent wilds every spin + x5 multiplier on every winning spin. 3 or more scatters trigger 5, 10 or 15 free spins respectively.
  • Future era - gives you 1 to 20 random wilds every spin + x2 multiplier on every winning spin. 3 or more scatters trigger 12, 24 or 36 free spins respectively.

Time Travel Tigers (Yggdrasil Gaming): Verdict

Does it look good? Yes, it sure does. Is it an entertaining slot? Well, it depends on your preferences we'd have to say. But when push comes to shove, it's a horrible slot from a gambling point of view. For one, a slot that is 4 rows high with only 25 paylines makes no sense to us, although inexperienced players might fall for all the eye-candy.

The payouts are dreadful to say the least with a base game that is nothing but a yawner. We can't say for sure what the max win potential in the main game is, but we'd be surprised if it's more than 50x. Should you trigger the free spins, there is at least a max win potential of 1000 times the stake, but even that is nothing to get even remotely excited about. To give you an idea, landing a full screen of wilds with the top x5 multipler yields a 750 times the stake win. Most of the times, however, the wilds in the free spins features will be placed far out of reach from the line hits with nothing to show for.

Time Travel Tigers is not a slot we will ever play, not even for wagering purposes. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, there is no real reason for anyone to play this.
