Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded: Slot Overview

Amongst the overflowing hordes of Norse themed slots, one of the most successful franchises has come from Yggdrasil in the form of their 'Vikings Go' series. So far, the horned helmed warriors in these games have gone Wild, Berzerk, and to Hell. All have been enjoyably heavy Viking affairs full of cinematic introductions, atmosphere, and free spins where successful battles lead to sticky wild symbols. Yggdrasil has gone back to the 2016 release, Vikings Go Berzerk and made a few radical alterations. Core features are recognisable, yet everything's been shaken up, potential has been severely increased, and the whole game has been given a contemporary makeover to make it more of a gambling tool in line with current trends of big, volatile gaming.

Maybe it was because we were reviewing an early demo, but Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded did not start with one of those animated intros that have graced previous slots. Once in, you might need a moment or two to process what's the same, what's not. The main familiarity is the game grid, composed of 5 reels, 4 rows, 25 fixed paylines, and covered in the same set of symbols. Differences include a new icy location, where it's not clear what is going on, which an intro video would have helped clear up. One of the more concerning alterations for some players will be the fact the Rage meter collection function has been removed. However, as the name suggests, the Vikings can still go Berzerk, meaning sticky wilds are still one of the key features.

Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded slot

Some of the biggest changes have occurred to Reloaded's math model. This time around, volatility has been turned up to a medium-high setting, transforming the experience into a much more demanding/potentially rewarding one. RTP is the nicely rounded figure of 96%, while hits have a frequency of 24%. All devices are suitable to play Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded on where stakes vary from 25 p/c to £/€50 per spin.

Landing three to five matching symbols across a payline results in a win, and there are 8 regular symbols to work with. These are four low pay coins and four high-value Vikings. If you manage to land a line of five premium character symbols, this results in a win worth 6 to 10 times the total stake. To help you win, wilds are there, appearing on all reels to substitute pay symbols to complete line wins. However, one major difference now is that wilds may also land with multipliers of x2, x4, or x8.

Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded: Slot Features

Rage meters might have been removed, but it is still possible for characters to go Berzerk in the free spins bonus game. Other features include gamble options, Ragnarok Spins and Chests, which pop up at certain moments.

Landing at least 3 scatter symbols in the main game triggers the free spins feature. If 3, 4, or 5 land, the reward is 7 free spins, 8 free spins + 1 Berzerk Viking, or 9 free spins + 2 Berzerk Vikings, respectively. In free spins, when Viking Symbols land, they each battle an evil Siren. If they win the battle, they transform into sticky wild symbols which remain in place for the duration of the feature. If Vikings are in Berzerk mode, they always win their battle. Furthermore, at any point in free spins, wild symbols can be upgraded to x2, x4, or x8 wild multipliers for the remainder of the feature.

In free spins only, it is possible for treasure chest symbols to land on the last reel. When chests hit, they reveal prizes such as +1-3 additional free spins, +1-2 sticky wilds, +1 free spin and an extra Berzerk Viking, or double wild multipliers for the one spin - though x8 is max.

Whenever players trigger free spins, either organically or by buying them, they can then be gambled. To gamble, players are presented with 2 bags to choose one of. Pick correctly, and you move along a trail where you start free spins with 1, 2, 3, or 4 Berzerk Vikings. However, get the guess wrong at any stage on the trail, and you lose all free spins instantly.

The Ragnarok Spin can trigger randomly at any time, and all 4 Vikings turn into Berzerk mode. This means for that one spin, all Vikings win their fights and turn wild. This is possible in either the base game or free spins.

If buying the bonus is an option, players pay 75x the total stake to land at least 3 scatters symbols on the next spin. Once triggered, you can gamble them if you choose.

Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded: Slot Verdict

Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded is a very different ball game compared to the original. It will be interesting to see how it is received because some of what made the original so fun has been axed or converted into a leaner, meaner, less forgiving, yet potentially more rewarding experience. You get the feeling Yggdrasil may have possibly had slot streamers or big win videos in mind when designing it. Or, at least, a desire to make the 'Vikings Go' range compete with the brutal high-performance slots approach that is dominating at the moment.

As such, it means Reloaded's base game is less engaging since the rage collection meters are gone. Sure, there's Ragnarok Spins and wild multipliers, but a lot more has been poured into free spins, making buying the bonus extra alluring. Even chests have been removed from the base game, only ever showing up in free spins. Then there's the tough decision of gambling or collecting free spins. Gambling is the only way of starting with 3 or 4 Berzerk Vikings, which can make a colossal impact, yet you need three or four correct guesses to get there. Unlike some gambling systems that move you up or down a prize ladder, get one guess wrong here, and you're instantly out. Reloaded takes as much nerve as it does luck to push it to its limit. Another major difference is Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded's limit is way higher than it ever was in previous games, where it is possible to now win up to 25,000 times the stake.

All these changes mean Reloaded is by far the most berzerk game in the 'Vikings Go' range to date. For gung-ho players, this will be music to their ears, though for others, ironically, it might be a little too berzerk for their tastes. To get the most out of Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded, it seems you have to be willing to go the extra mile, where greater rewards may be found for sure, but which can mercilessly punish the slightest misstep.

Reloaded drastically ups the stakes to make it by far the most berzerk game in the series.
