Highway Legends: Slot Overview
Hands in the air, players, this is a stick-up! Or some such thing is going on in Highway Legends, an online slot from software provider Play'n GO. If the words 'Highway Legends' conjured up images of badasses on bikes, tearing up the asphalt as they cruise along open country, think again. Highway Legends rewinds the dial back a few years, where two characters called Swift Rick and Lady Pearl engage in a spot of highway robbery in roadside coaches. According to the game info, this dastardly duo don't care what it is; they'll nab the lot. Certain gamblers may have to be as undiscerning as the two bandits since Highway Legends is, in some ways, one of the lower thrill games in the Play'n GO library.
It's certainly not one of the studio's less attractive games, though. The background imagery of statues, well-tended gardens, and many steps leading somewhere in the base game is all very elegant. It seems that while Swift Rick and Lady Pearl are happy nicking any old thing, they'd prefer it if the target of their heists were wealthy. Makes sense; rich folk back then were probably more likely to leave stray bits of jewellery lying around than their less well-off counterparts. Free spins take place in a less elegant location, though, one of those places you wouldn't want to be confronted by a couple of highway robbers on a dark and stormy night.

In the middle of the opulence or the middle of nowhere, Highway Legends' game grid consists of 5 reels, 3 rows, and has 20 ways to win. With no less than five possible RTP configurations, the one to be on the lookout for is the default 96.25% one, if possible. A medium volatile game, players are able to choose a bet of 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin before diving into this world of masked crime.
All of Highway Legends' 9 regular pay symbols award a win for landing combinations of 3 to 5-of-a-kind. Divided into 3 groups, the low pays are J-A card symbols, the mids are 3 items of jewellery, while the highs are a masked male bandit and a female bandit. When landing a full 5 OAK winning way, the payouts for doing so are 4x to 5x the bet for the royals, 10x to 20x the bet for the mediums, and 25x to 30x the bet for the two premiums. Crossed pistol wilds get you a bit more at 50 times the bet for a 5 wild winning line, or they can be used to replace any regular pay symbol.
Highway Legends: Slot Features

For features, Highway Legends offers a Cash Collect extra in the base game only and two types of free spins rounds players can choose from once triggered.
Cash Collect Feature
Cash Bag symbols may land on the first four reels displaying values of 2x to 30x the bet. When a Cash Collect symbol lands on reel the rightmost reel, it collects the values of all Cash Bag symbols in view on reels 1 to 4. The Cash Collect feature is only available in the base game, never in free spins.
Free Spins Trigger
The free spins round is triggered when 3 scatter symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5 in the base game. Players then get to choose one of the 2 free spins options – Stacked Wild Hold Up Free spins or Roaming Rider Wilds Free Spins. Neither can be retriggered; however, in the base game, when 2 scatters land on reels 1 and 3, there is a chance the Robber Free Spins Trigger respins reel 5 and lands a scatter.
Roaming Rider Wilds Free Spins
This feature comes with 15 free spins. When wilds land, they are held over for the following spin. Held wilds may move to a random position on the grid before the reels stop spinning. Up to 13 wilds are available, but any wilds from the triggering spin are not held over.
Stacked Wild Hold Up Free Spins
This feature awards 10 free spins, where stacked wilds can be added to any reel. Stacked wilds spin-off on the following spin. A stacked wild is the same as having 3 individual wilds on a reel, and they possess the same value as regular wilds as well.

Highway Legends: Slot Verdict
It was quite easy to be swept along with Highway Legends' grandeur at first look. It harkens back to an era (one wonders how fictional) where even highway bandits looked as refined as the people they robbed and used good manners while doing so. Even if it wasn't exactly like that back then, the game did instigate thoughts along this line. However, being robbed by anyone, no matter how fancy their clothes, is never a good thing, and once the initial dazzle of Highway Legends' sheen wore away and a thorough inspection of the paytable had been conducted, what was left felt a little on the hollow side.
It's not so much the features themselves. The Cash Collect feature is a sort of pared-back, basic Fishin' Frenzy type thing. Not super exciting in and of itself, but something to keep the base game chugging along and a feature that fits in with the highway banditry theme. The bonus rounds have their finer points as well. However, if you're interested to see how far the potential robbery can go, well, not that far, really. Highway Legends is one of Play'n GO's lower potential slots, topping out at 1,250 times the bet.
So, is Highway Legends a case of crime not paying after all? We jest, but still, Highway Legends does have a noticeably low max win figure for a Play'n GO slot or for any studio's slot in this day and age. Players happy spinning for potential prizes in Highway Legends' modest range who appreciate a slot dripping with opulent imagery should find the game quite charming. Others, who prefer a bit of a harder edge, something more impressive to shoot for, may well see through the dazzle soon enough and find what's left a tad unsatisfactory.
Highway Legends is a classy-looking game, but one that learns a little too hard on style over substance.
