Cred: Slot Overview

Best be flipping that cap backwards, turning the bass up real high, and digging in the jewellery box to find the fattest gold chain you can find for this one, players. The occasion is Cred, an online slot from software provider Wicked Games that delves into the world of hip hop, from the making of to the enjoying of tunes. You don't necessarily have to be a rap connoisseur to dig what the game has to offer, but it will help if 'Book of' mechanics get your pulse racing. So yes, Cred does the expanding, pay from any reel action the genre is famous for, but it also drops a unique coin feature into the mix.

Wicked Games has looked to 90s rap for inspiration when making Cred, imbuing a gritty rags to riches NYC vibe where everyone's hustling for a record deal and get themselves on a wanted poster - not a real one, one that hangs on teenagers' bedroom walls. Much to the dismay of their parents. We've got mixing in a basement in the base game, where tracks are laid down, before heading to the rooftop to party. Cred doesn't take itself super seriously, reinforced by graffiti that reads 'Just Another Book Game' in a nice little meta-jab at the thousands of 'Book of' slots out there, of which Cred is one.

Cred slot - base game

A classic featured game gets a classic set-up, dropping symbols onto a 5x3 grid and evaluating them for wins along 10 paylines. It is run by a highly volatile math model, knocking out an RTP of 96.12%. Wicked Bonuses and a Booster are on hand for players who don't just want to stake $/€0.10 to $/€200 on each spin.

Cred's pay symbols are spray cans, banknote bundles, containers, hats, and guns in baggies, while its high pays are four character symbols that play on real rappers named Hard D, Chill Block, 6 Pack, and Lil Massive. A line of 5 matching baggie symbols pays 8x-12x the bet, while 60x-500x is paid for landing a line of five matching high pays. Wild tape deck/mixtape symbols both substitute for any regular paying symbol (not expanded symbols) and act as the scatter.

Cred: Slot Features

Cred slot - free spins

As a Book slot, be on the lookout for special expanding symbols in free spins, as well as a special Gold Record addition. On the optional betting side, an ante bet is present, along with two feature buys.

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, or 5 mixtape scatters awards 10 free spins and a payout of 2x, 20x, or 200x the bet, respectively. Before free spins begin, one pay symbol is randomly chosen to be the special expanding symbol. After regular wins are evaluated, if enough special expanding symbols land, they expand to cover their reels and pay all lines regardless of their position. Each time the round is retriggered by landing 3 scatters, +10 free spins are awarded, plus another special expanding symbol is chosen.

The Gold Record

The Gold Record only appears in free spins, and awards a random xBet prize of 5x to 1,000x each time it lands. If Gold Records are selected as the special expanding symbol, the landed Gold Record pays first, then reels containing Gold Records expand and pay again with new values.

Wicked Booster and Bonuses

The Wicked Booster is an ante bet costing 5x, which triggers the special expanding symbol feature on each spin. It is also possible to buy 10 free spins with 1 special expanding symbol for 100x or 10 free spins with at least 3 special expanding symbols for 240x the bet. When retriggers occur in both bonus buys, +10 free spins and one extra expanding symbol are awarded.

Cred: Slot Verdict

While it openly mocks its own generic mechanics, Cred manages to deliver enough heat to back up its hippin' and hoppin' swagger. It's a game that has a bit of fun with the classic gameplay, dressing it up in a more flamboyant, less lying in the sand for a thousand years spirit. Not everyone is into rap music, but the track change Wicked Games has made makes for a colourful split from pyramids, temples, and tombs. And while some cynics may be thinking the studio made the drastic theme switch in an attempt to disguise its classic features, there are things in Cred that avid 'Book of' followers probably have not experienced elsewhere.

That's not to say Wicked Games has completely flipped the script, but there is something here to whet the appetite for fanatics to cross off their Book bucket list. It's not the way retriggered free spins choose other special expanding symbols. That is handy, but it's been done before, in say, Legacy of Dead, a long, long time ago. No, what gives Cred, its uh, cred, is the introduction of the coin prize, represented by Gold Records. They're pretty decent on their own, where they can pay up to 1,000x each, but get them as the expanding symbol in free spins, which is unlikely to happen with great frequency, and the game can really step it up a gear. At best, it goes all the way to a cap of 10,000x. It might have been interesting if Cred provided the option to buy free spins with the Gold Record chosen, though the price tag might have been astronomical.

Despite there being around ten million Book games by now, don't check that number, Cred manages to stand out from the bulk of them. Theme choice helps, as it's hard to think of any other Book slots made in a hip hop style before. Fortunately, Wicked Games hasn't left it there, but added a clever coin twist that makes Cred nigh on unmissable for fans of this style to demo at least once. Cred is not a game that blows the genre wide open, but it brings enough innovation and attitude to keep things interesting for enthusiasts of this mechanical style.

Cred injects some much-needed personality into the crowded Book genre, pairing a fresh theme with just enough new ideas to stand out from the pack.
