Killer Night: Slot Overview

How annoying is it when you've planned a big night out, a night you've been looking forward to for ages, then something swoops in to ruin it like a freak blizzard, a power cut, or a last-minute cancellation? Irritating, to be sure, but all of that pales in comparison to a high school dance being spoiled by a homicidal maniac with a grudge and a sharp axe. That's the unfortunate situation facing the unlucky revellers in Killer Night, a slasher slot designed by Pragmatic Play, where a night that should be all about fun and celebration soon turns into a fight for survival. While nothing puts a damper on a party like dodging a maniacal killer, players will want the eerie dude around since he is linked to a wild multiplier, sticky wild feature.

Killer Night takes place on prom night, that very American of teenage events, at the unlucky Ridgeview High School. Quite why there is a killer on a rampage, or what their motivations might be, is unclear, but on closer inspection of the game info, the perpetrator looks like it might be the janitor, so feel free to connect those loose ends as you see fit. The game starts outside the school hall, on a dark and moonlit night, before heading inside to mingle with the kids, maybe have a dance, a non alcoholic beverage, whatever, before the terrorising begins. Inspired by the 1980s, Killer Night has a fun, goofy slasher vibe, complete with the sort of characters, gruesome undertones, and pulpy atmosphere you'd expect from a B-movie frightener.

The action is held on a 5x5 grid with 15 paylines. Brave players are able to stake $/€0.20 to $/€240 per spin, while having access to feature buys and special bets. The RTP on the default setting is 96.52%, coming from a highly volatile math model.

Killer Night's paytable displays glasses, portable cassette players, pom poms, football helmets, and corsages as the low pays, then five character symbols as the high pays. A low pay 5 OAK winning combination awards 1.25x to 2.5x the bet, rising to 5x to 15x when landing 5 matching characters in a win.

Killer Night: Slot Features

On the feature menu are expanding wilds, free spins, super free spins, special bets as well as a selection of feature buys.

Expanding Wild

The wild symbol can land on any reel where it substitutes for the regular pay symbols. A line of five wilds awards 30x the bet. When a wild hits, it can expand a random number of cells upwards or downwards. When it hits, it can also have a multiplier of x2 to x10, which applies to all wins that pass through it. Multipliers multiply each other when more than one is part of the same winning combination.

Free Spins

Regular scatters appear on all reels as do super scatters, but only one super scatter may land on the same spin. Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatters triggers 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. If a super scatter is part of the trigger, the round is considered to be super free spins. During the feature, all wilds that land are sticky; plus, they can expand and have multipliers as in the base game. When a wild lands directly above or below a sticky wild, first a random multiplier is selected for the new wild, or not; then the two symbols merge together with multiplier values added. If the round is super free spins, at least 3 wilds land on the first free spin. Free spins cannot be retriggered.

Special Bets & Feature Buys

Activating the ante bet costs 3x the stake to have 5x the chance of getting free spins. Super Spin 1 costs 10x to guarantee at least one wild on every spin. Super Spin 2 costs 200x to guarantee at least one wild on every spin, with higher chances of more wilds on the same spin, bigger multipliers, and taller expansions. Free spins cannot trigger from Super Spins. Players can trigger free spins or spins for 100x or guarantee super free spins for 500x their stake.

Killer Night: Slot Verdict

Killer Night turned out to be surprisingly average. The theme treatment is fine, but it's also quite cliched. Sure, there might not be many other prom horror slots, if any, yet the idea of a killer at a dance, party, celebration or similar event is hardly novel within the wider horror genre. It's particularly associated with the teen frighteners of the 1980s, from slasher staples like The Slumber Party Massacre and Prom Night to Hell Night and countless others. As a result, Killer Night's setting probably won't feel very original to a horror connoisseur, but the developers have made a reasonable effort to capture the look, feel, and energy of an '80s slasher.

The features probably won't feel hugely original either, relying heavily on expanding wilds to raise hairs on the back of the neck. Fair dues, some of the wilds that splatter themselves across the reels may carry multipliers, which increase the excitement level to another degree. Furthermore, multipliers multiply each other instead of being added to each other when used in the same win, and if you're lucky, it doesn't take huge numbers to combine into a substantial total multiplier. Free spins boost the appeal by making wilds sticky, though the strange symbol-spinning thing it does when merging a new wild is a little odd. Regardless, Killer Night can hack its way to a 10,000x win cap, making the game a potent force if somewhat unoriginal in many ways.

Like a horror movie where you can see the end of story twist coming a mile away, Killer Night is a little predictable. There's nothing it does which is so negative it needs to be torn to shreds and left in the school dumpster, but by the same token, there's not much here that really kick-starts a major adrenaline rush either. Killer Night was completely competent, yet it also lacked that razor-sharp edge to make it a classic thriller.

Bigwinboard Summary

Killer Night looks the part, but the somewhat cliched theme and mechanics make it more of a routine frightener than a genuinely thrilling slasher.
