4 Fantastic Vikings Hold the Gold Slot

The Vikings are back, and apparently there's no such thing as retirement when you're a Scandinavian warrior with an appetite for treasure. Having already tried their luck at fishing, including a rather chilly winter expedition, the four Norse adventurers have decided to pursue something a little more traditional in 4 Fantastic Vikings Hold the Gold. This time, 4ThePlayer has ditched the fishing rods in favour of collecting cash prizes and filling the reels with Viking symbols, introducing two different respin features and a Free Spins round to help with the looting. There's a maximum payout of 12,000x the bet waiting at the end of the voyage, although getting there could involve considerably more patience than the average Viking raid.

The history behind this particular crew is rather interesting. The characters originally appeared in Yggdrasil's Vikings Go Wild series, which began back in 2015 and went on to produce several sequels. Years later, 4ThePlayer brought them into its own universe with 4 Fantastic Vikings Go Fishing, combining the familiar warriors with mechanics from the Fantastic Fish collection. Hold the Gold is another step in that evolution, and one that arguably makes more sense for the characters. After all, Vikings were rather better known for plundering valuables than for sitting around waiting for a fish to bite.

Anyone familiar with the previous releases will recognise the presentation immediately. The reels sit aboard an elaborate golden longship sailing through picturesque Nordic scenery, with forests, mountains and waterways providing the backdrop. The four warriors retain their exaggerated cartoon appearances, and the overall production is bright, colourful and polished. It's a pleasant-looking game, though the artwork has changed so little that the latest adventure could almost pass for an expansion of its predecessors. The Vikings might have found a new way to earn a living, but apparently nobody thought to give the ship a fresh coat of paint.

4 Fantastic Vikings Hold the Gold uses a 6x4 grid with 4,096 ways to win, where matching symbols connect across adjacent reels from the left. Bets range from 0.10 to 40 per spin, with high volatility, a default RTP of 96%, and alternative settings of 94%, 92% and 90.5%. The paytable features card ranks, Viking equipment and the four warriors themselves, with the latter paying up to 10x the bet for six matching symbols. A golden longship acts as the Wild, while Kraken Scatters and cash Coins provide access to the special features.

The Viking Respinner is activated through collectible tokens attached to Viking symbols. When a corresponding pot triggers, all instances of that particular Viking remain locked on the grid while the other positions respin. Additional matching Vikings also become locked and award further respins, continuing until no new symbols appear. The resulting grid is then evaluated for winning combinations. It's essentially a Hold and Win concept applied to regular paying symbols rather than cash prizes, which makes for a slightly different approach to the familiar formula.

The Cash Respinner is more conventional. Landing at least six Coins triggers a sequence where cash prizes remain fixed on the grid, with new Coins joining them until a respin produces nothing further. Incrementor symbols can increase the value of every collected Coin by between 1x and 100x the bet, giving the feature an opportunity to produce something more substantial than the individual prizes might initially suggest.

Three or more Kraken Scatters award between 8 and 40 Free Spins, with additional spins available through retriggers. Viking Pots become more active during the round, while stacked Viking symbols can transform into larger symbols carrying multipliers. A Feature Buy menu is also available, with respin options starting at 35x the bet, an enhanced Super Respinner option at 50x, and direct access to Free Spins for 70x.

What makes Hold the Gold more interesting than another routine cash-collection slot is the decision to apply similar mechanics to two different types of rewards. Filling the reels with matching Viking characters creates a different sort of anticipation from watching cash values accumulate, and the prospect of transforming stacked symbols into multiplier-bearing giants during Free Spins gives the system a little extra muscle. Neither feature is particularly groundbreaking on its own, but the combination is a sensible departure from the fishing mechanics of the previous instalments.

The downside is that much of the experience still revolves around the familiar business of locking symbols in place and waiting for more to arrive. There are two variations on the idea, but they're variations nonetheless, and players suffering from Hold and Win fatigue may find little reason to celebrate. The relatively unchanged presentation doesn't help matters either, giving the impression that 4ThePlayer has concentrated almost entirely on the mathematical side of the production while leaving the artists to enjoy a well-earned holiday.

Still, 4 Fantastic Vikings Hold the Gold looks like a reasonable continuation of the series. The 12,000x maximum provides an attractive target, the two respin systems offer some variety, and the Free Spins enhancements should give the Viking symbols a better opportunity to earn their keep. It's not the sort of release that threatens to rewrite the history of slot development, but there's enough here to distinguish it from the previous fishing adventures.
