I have Anxiety as I think my life is screwed
Due to the anxiety and depression, I haven’t played any slots for almost a month. Ever since I started playing slots online, I’ve never take any “break” that’s so long.
Various types of screwed up.
For me, it’s picking the wrong path.
Ever since Junior high school where I start to interest in programming. Which eventually resulted in my major being Computer Science (aka programming) when it comes to Undergraduate.
And just enrolled in post graduate study (currently 1st year), major being Digital Media and Art, which might also be helpful if I decide to make my own game (or slot) in the future.
I picked a seeming promising branch on the skill tree a few years ago and now they’re revamping the skill tree, the branch I’m currently at has been cut off.
Hold on a sec. Would you look at that thing called AI.
A lot of jobs are in trouble. Programmers being on top of the list.
And AI are growing at an acclerating speed.
Well I can’t imagine the difficulty of me trying to find a job after finishing post graduate study.
Why would they hire me when they can use one (or a group) of AI to accomplish the same thing, which is both faster and cheaper?
To make things worse, I’m already a few years behind.
1st year of postgraduate study is supposed to happen at 23-24 years old but I’m almost 28! Imagine a speedrun where the game lagged for half a minute, that feeling must be so cooked.
In China this is more important, as I’ve heard countless programmers got laid off (aka getting “optimized”) for being too old, at the age of 35. So yeah anxiety is pretty much inevitable for me. I feel so lost about my future.
Please consider talking to someone, your country may offer free counseling services etc and tell your Dr/GP who can get you on the right path for anxiety/depression etc and services you can use. Your university/college likely has free or discounted services if you talk to them. I get it's awkward/hard to talk to people about but it's worth it, if you don't like your Dr/feel comfortable with them ask to see another one, remember you are asking for your own interests to improve your life and they understand patients want a Dr they are comfortable with.
Your 28, not to old to get into IT roles or into a different industry later on if you need to, many people make career changes in their mid to late 30's. Nothing stopping you applying for jobs this year while studying to get some work experience or part time work in another industry. Some job history always looks good on a CV over nothing, even if it's unrelated to the degree. Your teachers/course staff can point you towards networking events/opportunities. I studied IT right after high school, felt unhappy in my 3rd year of the degree with that path but completed it and ended up working in stevedore/longshoreman roles for 15 years earning similar money driving ship cranes and forklifts lol.
The whole AI thing hasn't come to much yet in terms of actual productivity/savings over humans, it may or may not impact jobs and if it does it will be across every industry where roles can be automated. Not much you can do about it, think higher taxes and universal income type support if theres a large unemployed population because theres not enough jobs. FTE roles might become 20-30hours a week to keep more people employed and/or people donate their time to charitable causes etc to keep busy. That kind of thing is a long way away, if it ever happens.
It's important to remember that as long as you stay focused and are always working towards the things you want, the universe has a way of working things out for us. Try not to worry too far ahead, we can't control it. Do whatever you can to find peace in your mind, you're very young and have your best days ahead of you, friend.
Wishing you well mate
I’m really sorry you’re carrying all of this. It makes sense that you’d feel scared and lost with so much uncertainty around AI and the future. But your path isn’t wasted, the skills you’ve built still matter, and they don’t disappear just because the world is changing. Also, 28 is not too late. You’re not “behind.” You’re still moving forward, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Your life isn’t screwed. You’re just in a really hard moment, be gentle with yourself, you deserve that.
