The Grim Reaper Slot (Mini Review)
An exclusive release, The Grim Reaper from Quickspin takes the money symbol collection format made popular by the Epic Fish series and shifts it into a darker, supernatural setting. Played on a 5x3 grid with 10 paylines, it runs on high volatility and a top RTP configuration of 96.1%, with bets starting at €0.10 and reaching up to €100 per spin.
Quickspin has released three Epic Fish slots to date, and the mechanics have lent themselves to this edgier, grimmer theme quite nicely. The Epic Fish range might not have put a dent in the unstoppable Big Bass, Fishin' Frenzy fish slot edifices, but they do offer something a little different. That little difference has transitioned to the ghostly afterlife rather well. One reason gamblers may choose to play a fish slot is to pretend they're out on the water, in a beautiful location, hauling in fish, aka money symbols. Anyone bored of that but still wants to collect stuff, then hauling in souls, dodging the Reaper's scythe, and just generally hanging out in graveyards might make for a refreshing change.
Maybe not hugely refreshing since The Grim Reaper recycles its gameplay, but swiping Souls with a scythe can be fun, and a number of mechanics build on the main money symbol collecting component. Soul Respins, for example, can be useful in stacking extra Souls or wilds on the screen to possibly improve the overall result - randomly in the base game, guaranteed to do so during free spins. Free spins offer points of interest as well, where instead of collecting wilds to increase a collection multiplier as is often the case amongst a certain competitor, it can level up to the point the wilds are sticky and Souls may be added to the reels when they didn't already land, expanding the gameplay when unlocked.
Like Epic Fish Net of Fortune, The Grim Reaper is unlikely to redefine how users perceive money symbol collection games. But it's got a few neato tricks tucked away in its sleeve, and it makes for a spookier, more uncanny alternative for gamblers entertained by this style of play. Winning potential was not available, but the 5,360x available in the previous game seems like a reasonable estimation.
