Tiny Toads: Slot Overview

If you've spent any time spinning reels, you'll know iGaming has a strange fascination with toads - from the classic leaping frog jackpots to pond-dwelling prizes (Tai The Toad, Fire Toad, and Mr Toad Gold Megaways to name a few). Pragmatic Play dives back into the swampy slot scene with Tiny Toads.

At a glance, Tiny Toads didn't look like a slot that was made by Pragmatic Play in the year 2024. It has a certain wacky charm, and some of the sound effects are amusing, but it also looks older than it is. Three frogs on lily pads sit above the reels, linked to the Firefly symbol collection, in a water-heavy background, that is, eh, okay. The four displayed jackpots might get you going, or they won't, and after the first look, Tiny Toads wasn't exactly triggering masses of enthusiasm to get amongst it.

Clicking the coins button lets players pick a stake of 25 c to $/€250, while under that are two bonus buy buttons. Treading water beneath the lily pads is Tiny Toads' highly volatile math model, producing an RTP of 96.51%, but be on the lookout for lower return models. For most of the game, Tiny Toads plays out on a 5x4 grid where 50 paylines evaluate wins, but this can expand when the green modifier is active.

Pay symbols create winning combinations from the leftmost reel on adjacent reels. Paying 0.6 times the bet for 5 OAK are the 10-A card ranks, going up to 1-2 times the bet for landing a line of 5 flowers, logs, fish, birds, or crocodiles. Rather meagre values there. Wilds substitute for any pay symbol and they land on any reel except the leftmost.

Tiny Toads: Slot Features

In Tiny Toads, 3 types of Firefly symbols may land - Purple, Red, or Green. When they do land, they are collected by the purple, red, or green toad on top of the reels. Collecting a Firefly can randomly trigger free spins with the purple, red, or green modifier activated randomly. Collection occurs at the end of a spin, and if free spins are triggered, 1, 2, or 3 of the modifiers are randomly activated.

Golden Firefly

The Golden Firefly only appears in free spins if the red modifier is active. It replaces the Purple Firefly if the round also has the purple modifier active.

Modifiers

• Purple Modifier - With this modifier, each Purple Firefly that hits reveals a money award of 1x to 10x the bet, or +1 or +2 free spins. When this modifier is active, a random multiplier of x2, x3, or x5 may be revealed on any spin, applying to all line wins on that spin.
• Red Modifier - With this modifier, all Fireflies are Golden Firefly symbols when they land, revealing a money award of up to 10x the bet or a random letter of a certain colour linked to the names of the fixed Jackpots. Or, if the purple modifier is also active in the round, it can reveal +1 or +2 free spins. The Jackpots are the 10x Mini, the 30x Minor, the 350x Major, or the 3,500x Grand. When all of the letters of the Jackpots are collected, the corresponding prize is awarded.
• Green Modifier - With this modifier, the grid grows to 5x6 in size, and the number of paylines increases to 100. Any wild that hits triggers a nudge, filling its reel with wilds.

Free Spins

When the bonus round has only the purple modifier or only the green modifier, 5 free spins are granted. Fireflies of any colour may be collected in the feature and can randomly trigger one more free spins with any combination of modifiers active that were awarded during the current round. The same rules apply if the bonus has the purple and the green modifiers active. The same rules apply if both the purple and the green modifiers active. When the bonus round has only the red modifier, 10 free spins are granted. When the red modifier is active, only Golden Fireflies may hit, and new rounds cannot be awarded. The same applies if the feature has the purple and red modifiers, the green and the red, or all 3 modifiers.

Feature Buy

Tiny Toads' free spins round can be instantly bought from the feature buy. For 100x the bet, free spins are triggered on a spin with 1, 2 or 3 modifiers, while 400x the bet buys free spins with all 3 modifiers on the triggering spin.

Tiny Toads: Slot Verdict

Has Pragmatic Play been playing Power Combo slots from the likes of All For One Studios? It sure did seem like it after reviewing Tiny Toads. There is a lot of crossover. From the 3 different coloured trigger symbols, triggering free spins with combinations of different modifiers, nudging wilds, to the fixed jackpots won by collecting the correct letters. Very close. So much so that it felt like Pragmatic Play either played so much Power Combo the experience was buried deep in the subconscious, or they straight copied their competitor, or one or more ex-All For One employees jumped the fence to bring the ideas to Prag's attention. Or something completely different that our powers of speculation have failed to illuminate.

Don't want to be that guy, but Tiny Toads didn't feel like a typical Pragmatic Play production. As in, it was kind of flimsy, kind of low-budget looking, all in all, a bit odd. First and foremost, local jackpots will be a deal breaker for some gamblers right from the off. They're static, so the 3,500x Grand is one of, if not the acme of Tiny Toads adrenal hits. Hitting the Grand isn't actually far off hitting the game's 4,000x the bet win cap, a number which is a little on the low side for a Pragmatic Play slot.

Tiny Toads' enjoyment levels, on the whole, were a little on the low side for a Pragmatic Play slot, as well. The session boiled down to looking out for Fireflies in order to trigger red modifier free spins, then looking out for letter collection in order to try and bag a jackpot. Some might find this buzzy, buggy stuff darn swell, but it wasn't Pragmatic Play's choicest work.
