MultiFly 2: Slot Overview

Multipliers, wilds, ways, and avalanches make for a lethal combination, and one that was put to excellent use in Yggdrasil's vibrantly coloured chameleon slot Multifly! released at the turn of the 2020s. Six years have passed, and MultiFly 2 has just crawled out of the jungle, armed with more or less the same features as its predecessor. The sequel brings players back to the glowing canopy with its signature ways, Dropdowns, wilds, and reel multiplier combo, creating the potential for exciting chain reactions when the right symbols land. The formula remains largely unchanged, and fans of the original will no doubt be eager to see whether the sequel can capture the same magic while delivering a few surprises of its own.

MultiFly 2 possesses a similar glowing in the jungle appearance Yggdrasil used in the original slot, and also again in Raptor DoubleMax. This one has less of a chameleon focus, though one sits on top of the reels, tonguing wild symbols in order to increase reel multipliers. This will make more sense soon. A big juicy frog sits next to the gaming grid, not really doing much beyond puffing out its throat, and all things considered, the view isn't as dazzling or as magical as it was in the past. Don't want to be that one guy, but after being let down by Raptor 2 and the initial lukewarm reaction to MultiFly 2, this feels like a metaphor for Yggdrasil itself, which seems to have gotten comfortable releasing games that are often okay, occasionally good, but rarely pushing far beyond that.

The gaming grid is a 5x3 reelset, with a 243 ways to win pay system where winning combinations pay left to right on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel. The volatility has been set to medium-high, and four RTP variants have been designed, and 96% is the highest. The stake range is not particularly wide, as players can choose from a minimum of $/€0.10 up to $/€10.

MultiFly 2's low pays are plants made into the shape of clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades, while the high pays are lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and snakes. A line of 5 matching suits pays 0.6x to 1.5x the bet, or 2x to 4x is awarded for five matching high pays.

In this section is the Dropdown feature, wilds, reel multipliers, and free spins.

Dropdown Feature

The Dropdown feature removes winning symbols, causing new and existing symbols to fall down to refill the grid. Each time a Dropdown win occurs, a wild symbol is added to one of the winning positions before the rest of the reels are refilled.

Wild and Reel Multipliers

Wilds substitute for all regular paying symbols. When a wild lands or is added after a win, it adds a random multiplier to the reel multiplier above it. The reel multiplier applies to all wins with at least one symbol on that reel. If multiple reel multipliers are part of the same win, their values are added together. In the base game, multipliers may be increased by 1-3, and they reset at the end of the spin.

Free Spins

Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatters awards 5, 10, or 15 free spins, respectively. Free spins essentially play out like the base game, except reel multipliers do not reset between spins, and the round can be retriggered.

MultiFly 2: Slot Verdict

MultiFly! was a fan favourite, plunging players into a gorgeous jungle location before letting loose its cascade-linked reel multipliers, which could turn a modest spin into a rolling tongue flicking ride. MultiFly 2 recaptures that, but it might have benefited from slightly less recapture and more innovation. While it maintains the mechanics which made its predecessor a hit, the less vibrant visual presentation and lack of freaky new features mean the sequel is more of a safe horizontal move than a major hop forward. The original was a slot that managed to strike an enjoyable balance between relative simplicity and excitement, caused by neatly connected features, and a colourful jungle setting. MultiFly 2's close adherence to the formula was puzzling as much as anything else.

The gameplay is certainly capable of being entertaining. The combination of Dropdown wins and reel multipliers has the potential to generate momentum, though there could be a lot of dead spins before this happens. Strangely, potential is more or less the same as it was before, at circa 10,000x the bet. Unusual, since a bigger figure in the max winning department would have been a quick and easy way of giving MultiFly 2 extra weight. The final result doesn't seem to add much which wasn't previously available, and some of the things that did stand out, such as the slightly washed-out palette and dead spin regime, were more detrimental than a bunch of tightly coiled mechanical upgrades would have been.

Add it up, and like Raptor 2, it is hard to think of many completely unequivocal reasons why someone would choose MultiFly 2 over the original. For a sequel six years in the making, players may have been expecting a bigger punch, whether through boosted potential, major mechanical twists, or a visual upgrade that pushes modern hardware. Instead, Yggdrasil has designed a safe, horizontal release which prefers to repeat its mechanics rather than unleash them. For newcomers, MultiFly2 might be a perfectly respectable slot. For returning players, it's something of a missed opportunity and the overall experience never quite escapes the feeling that it has been better executed before.

Bigwinboard Summary

MultiFly 2 retains the original's core entertainment value, but plays it a bit too safe to justify the six-year wait.
