Henry 8th Calves of Steel Slot

Henry 8th Calves of Steel is one of the more ridiculous concepts produced to date, reimagining the infamous Tudor king obsessed with leg day rather than politics. Beneath the absurd humour sits a highly volatile 5x5 slot built around walking wilds, escalating multipliers, and two very different free spins features.

Designed by Hackaw partner Kitsune, the entire game revolves around the giant Walking Wild symbol, a full-reel version of Henry VIII that can land on reels 2 through 5. Each wild arrives with a multiplier between 1x and 100x and may initially appear only partially visible. As it nudges into position, the multiplier increases by +1 for every row revealed, meaning a wild can become significantly more valuable before any wins are even calculated. Once fully expanded, the wild begins moving left across the reels through a sequence of respins, applying its multiplier to any winning combinations it participates in. Multiple walking wilds can appear simultaneously, with their values combining for potentially substantial payouts.

Free spins come in two versions. The first, triggered by 3 scatters, awards 8 free spins and introduces a Global Multiplier meter. Every walking wild that leaves the screen contributes its multiplier to this meter. The catch is that the multiplier is completely inactive during this version of the feature. Unless players manage to upgrade into the premium bonus by landing 4 scatters, the accumulated value is effectively wasted. The higher-tier 4-scatter feature also awards 8 free spins but activates the Global Multiplier permanently, allowing it to apply to all future wins and creating the most realistic path towards the 10,000x maximum payout.

From a technical perspective, the game sits in a strong position. RTP is set at 96.32%, comfortably above average, while the 10,000x max win feels appropriate for the volatility level. The bonus buy menu is extensive, ranging from 3x enhanced spins through to a 300x purchase of the premium Run This Way feature. The 50x Walking Wild feature is arguably the most interesting option, guaranteeing at least one walking wild every spin and showcasing the game's core mechanic immediately.

Visually, Kitsune Studios deserves credit for fully committing to the joke. The muscular version of Henry VIII is absurd from the moment he appears, and the entire presentation leans into the ridiculous premise with colourful animations and tongue-in-cheek humour. It is the sort of theme that could easily have become annoying, but the studio manages to keep it entertaining without overdoing it.

Overall, Henry 8th Calves of Steel delivers a fairly entertaining central mechanic and wraps it in a, let's say memorable, theme. The walking wild system creates tension and anticipation every time it lands, while the premium free spins feature can generate some impressive multiplier combinations. The biggest drawback is the lower-tier bonus, which builds a Global Multiplier only to leave it inactive unless an upgrade occurs. It is a frustrating design choice that prevents the game from its full potential. Even so, the strong RTP, unique presentation, and engaging walking wild mechanic make this a decent release.
