Age of Asgard (Yggdrasil Gaming): Overview
It's not by chance that Swedish developers named themselves Yggdrasil Gaming. The word itself means Odin's Horse and is the tree that binds the ancient Nordic cosmos. This is serious stuff, and those are big boots to fill. Fortunately for the gaming community, Yggdrasil has proven time and again that they are more than capable of producing ground breaking slots. Age of Asgard may not dazzle you at first glance, but give it a chance and it proves a worthy addition to the mythological slot genre.
The first thing you notice when the game loads, is the dual reel setup known as the Dual Machine feature. Up top is a 5x3 grid populated by the goodies – all-female warriors you wouldn't want to mess with. The lower 5x3 grid is where the baddies reside, and what do good and evil do? Fight of course, and you will want this to happen. When good and evil clash the results are respins and wilds. It all starts with choosing a bet level from 0.20 up to €/£200 and hitting spin.
What might cause slot warriors to pause is a mid-level volatility coupled with a relatively humdrum top prize of 2,444x the stake. Don’t expect the wild swings of a high volatility slot, though the game carries a respectable RTP rating of 96.2%. If this is curbing your enthusiasm, then don’t look at the paytable, which frankly, does not do the Norse god's justice. The paytable starts with card suit symbols worth from 0.2x up to 2x the stake. There are 8 of these, four up top and four below crafted in a cool runic fashion.
There are 6 high pay symbols, larger than life at 1x3 size - 3 monsters below and 3 heroes up top. These gorgeous icons are worth 0.5x up to 6x the stake. On their own, pretty average, but like we said, give it time. Epic action from the extras bails out the game like a swipe from Thor's hammer.
Age of Asgard (Yggdrasil Gaming): Features
This is where the game gets surprisingly good. Many slots have extras that build on top of each other - free spins that open up multipliers for example. Yet, not many we’ve seen recently work as well together as they do with Age of Asgard. It all starts with the wilds. During the base game, both grids get their own wild, a good golden warrior, and a mean golden beast.
Two things make them special. One, they are 1x3 tiles in size, and two, if they don't cover a reel when they land, they can nudge themselves up or down to do so. When they do cover a reel, they lock into place and trigger an extra respin. If both grids have full wilds opposite each other they Clash, knocking together and causing a bunch of random 1x1 wilds to scatter the grid. If a small wild lands on a high pay symbol that whole symbol becomes wild.
If 3 scatters land on the top or 3 on the bottom grid they both merge to form one super grid using the symbols from that part of the game for 10 Free Spins. However, if 3 scatters land on both sides at the same time, then Ragnarok Spins are launched. Here the grids merge as before, but the player gets 20 free spins populated only by the high paying symbols, and large wilds always nudge.
Lastly, if 3 scatters land on one side and 2 on the other, then the Randomiser is launched. This wheel results in either 10 free spins, or a consolation prize of 50 times your stake, or it launches the Ragnarok free spins.
Age of Asgard (Yggdrasil Gaming): Verdict
Age if Asgard is a game that really grows on you. At first, it can be easy to dismiss it on the grounds of medium volatility and its so-so top prize, especially if you don't get many early wins in. However, we found the spins seriously fly by once the momentum began to ramp up. The secret to Age of Asgard's magic, and the reason you may stick with it, is the interplay between the extra features.
On their own they are great, but together they work like a well-oiled machine. When the game gets into its stride, then free spins can lead into giant wilds, into wild clashes, into random 1x1 wilds, electrifying wins and on it goes. To defeat evil, you need team work. To rack up serious wins you need the extras working in tandem, and this happened thrillingly often during testing and really won us over.
If you want big powerful characters in a big powerful setting you have come to the right place. Few do mythology as well as the Swedes. The double reel setup also deserves mention. The split setup gels and interacts so well it is easy to overlook just how unique it is. Its design compliments the super wilds and clashes perfectly, and the separation and coming together of the high pay symbols is a wonderful concept.
Let us preface our final point by saying that Age of Asgard is a great game. However, due to the company's name and country of origin, it does feel ever so slightly that Yggdrasil could have pulled the stops out and made this one a classic. Again, it sounds like we are complaining, but we are not. It's just that with a bit of tinkering, Age of Asgard could have been a real contender.
Perhaps by upping its top prize, or tweaking the volatility Age of Asgard could have been worthy of Valhalla. As it is, it remains a supremely playable mythological slot with gorgeous graphics and a brilliant interplay of extras. But hey, this is Yggdrasil, and we've come to expect nothing less.
