Alchemy: Slot Overview

Alchemy, the transmutation of base elements into precious metals, has to be one of the more fitting themes for an online slot. Similar to mediaeval alchemy, online gambling is all about taking something of lesser value, following a certain process, and hoping it turns into something of greater value. Both concepts sound pretty straightforward but can be deceptively tricky to put into practice in the real world. One of the first steps in potentially achieving the modern form of transmutation is picking the right game. Could Alchemy from UK developer Storm Gaming fit the bill?

Part of the problem of completing successful alchemical transformations in the past, presumably, was that guidebooks for doing so were either exceedingly rare or highly symbolic. Interestingly, these days, nuclear reactions can actually transform lead into gold isotopes, except the cost of doing so is financially unviable. Even more interesting is that scientists in India, including Madras Professor Thalappil Pradeep, have used what is effectively a teeny tiny pair of tweezers to switch atoms, chemically changing silver into gold. More or less.

In Alchemy the slot, Storm Gaming has forgone modern scientific interpretations and taken a thoroughly old-fashioned approach. We're used to seeing Megaways powered slots from Storm Gaming but Alchemy is the exact opposite in just about every regard. For starters, it looks like it came from the Book of Ra era, with 10 multi-coloured paylines crossing a 5-reel, 3-row game grid. Behind the reels sits a bunch of old parchment and candles, alluding to the sort of mediaeval workshop where alchemical experiments would go down. The soundtrack gives the game a slight Arabic feel, which is fitting since as well as medieval Europe, practitioners chased the alchemical dream in places as far-flung as India, China, and throughout the Muslim world.

Bubbling beneath the hood lies a medium volatile math model, which Storm Gaming has rated 3.5/5, while RTP comes in at 95.41%. Not the highest return value, but better than others we've seen from Storm. Hopefully, you don't like a steady stream of wins, as Alchemy's hit rate comes in at the relatively low value of 10.05%.

Playable from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, regular symbols pay left to right from the first reel onwards and can be made up of ten types of paying symbols. Four are J-A card royals, worth 5 to 10 times the stake for five of a kind, while the remaining six are various alchemical looking symbols worth 10 to 50 times the bet for a line of five. Green lion wilds expand when they land to cover all positions on their reel and substitute for all symbols except the scatter.

Alchemy: Slot Features

Appearing on all five reels is a sun scatter symbol. Landing 3, 4, or 5 of them awards 2x, 20x, or 50x the stake, plus 10 free spins. Free spins can also be retriggered if scatters land when the bonus round is active. One thing that changes during free spins is the wild symbol. It still expands to fill its reel as before, but now, each wild in view adds +1 free spin and upgrades the lowest premium symbol on the reels.

Alchemy: Slot Verdict

That's it, really. The process of alchemy is presumably a complicated one of bringing the right regents together, chanting specific words in the correct tone, or performing a complex ritual in just the right way (we're guessing). Yet, Alchemy, the slot, is a lot less sophisticated and basically involves sitting through a fairly low thrills base game until enough sun symbols hit for the chance to transform premium symbols in what was a fairly low thrills batch of free spins. As far as symbol upgrade bonus round slots go, there are a number of more enticing options out there. NetEnt's Gorilla Kingdom or Thunderkick's Pink Elephants slots are three which scored higher on the fun meter, just to name some examples. Alchemy does have the expanding full reel wild, but its low number of paylines, compared to the previously mentioned games' ways system, does diminish the wild's effectiveness.

The numbers bear this out. No one's saying a decent win or two isn't possible for the right mediaeval chemist while playing Alchemy, yet the review and official numbers suggest otherwise. Technically, Alchemy might be able to transform some lead into gold, and should players pull off the transmutation process, Strom Gaming has slapped a €250,000 win cap in place. That might sound impressive, but keep in mind the best result achieved during the studio's own simulated spins was 1,541x the bet. So, some gold, but not a whole lot of gold.

The other question is whether players will want to stick around long enough to see if they can make the 'magic' happen. Anyone into retro looking slots might be lured in, perhaps, since Alchemy is one of those games which looks a lot older than it actually is. However, for others, it's going to be whatever the opposite of love at first sight is. Not hate per se, yet, words such as ambivalence, distaste, or just meh, feel like some of the appropriate responses here.

It’s questionable whether any level of Alchemy could turn this chunk of lead into gold.
