Barbarian Fury Slot: Overview
Nolimit City is on a roll at the moment, currently crafting some really interesting titles. Before the dust from the frantically good Punk Rocker slot has settled, they've followed up with another edgy release called Barbarian Fury. The design team has taken another great concept and fleshed it out with excellent atmosphere, and a bunch of clever extras. The features list includes their xNudge mechanic, though its xWays cousin has been shelved for now. What remains are features that work best when synchronised to produce some intense gaming and solid rewards when it all comes together.
Punks might have thought they were pretty bad-ass, but when it comes to hardness, punks were a pack of weedy whiners compared to the original hard men and ladies – the barbarians. The word barbarian is a bit of a blanket term commonly used to refer to a wide range of people that did not belong to the dominant civilisations of the time. Think enemies of the Greek, Roman, and Christian empires for example. Barbarian Fury focuses on one the hardiest of the lot – those that dwelt in the frozen north.
As such, the 5 reel, 4 row slot has been set on a blizzard swept mountain. It's a moody scene and one made more ominous by the skulls that decorate the grid's frame. The soundtrack completes the picture, and if you are in any doubt, this is not a light-hearted romp across daisy strewn alpine meadows. Symbols continue the theme and are split into five 1x1 low pays, and three 4x1 high pays. The low pays are 9-A royals imprinted on battle-worn wooden shields. The premiums are comprised of a blue barbarian, a green warrioress, and a red warrior that looks like the chief. The chief is also the leader of the paytable at 10 times the stake for a line of five. There are 25 paylines to form winning combinations on with least three of a kind required to do so.
Before wrapping up in bearskins and diving in, players hit the dollar sign to select stakes. There is a good variety on offer from as low as 25 p/c and as high as £/€100 per spin. Running the game is a highly volatile math model which produces an RTP of 96.06%, or 96.32% with the feature buy activated. Did we mention it is highly volatile? This can't be stated enough, and sessions can run hot or burn as cold as the icy wasteland in which the game is set.
Barbarian Fury Slot: Features
Barbarian Fury’s set of features can work effectively on their own, but shine when combined. Perhaps the most common is the Barbarian Respin - whenever 3 or more of the same barbarian symbols land, they may activate the Barbarian Respin. When they do, they are nudged to completely cover their respective reels. Then, the barbarians are locked in place while the other reels are respun for a chance at scoring a bigger win.
Barbarian Fury comes with a wild symbol known as the xNudge Roaring Wild - it can appear on reels 2, 3, 4, in the form of a big roaring bear. Like the barbarian symbols, it comes in 4x1 size, and when it lands, it's always nudged to take over a full reel. In addition, the xNudge Roaring Wild possesses a multiplier which starts at x1 and each nudge increases it by +1 to a maximum of x4. More than one xNudge Roaring Wild can be present on a spin, and in this case, each multiplier is added together and applied to the line win.
Both of these features come into their own during the Fury Spins bonus round - 3 or more wolf scatters anywhere in view are needed to trigger the feature. When they land they are nudged down one position at a time until they fall off the grid. Each nudge adds +1 spin to the round. For example, if 3 scatters land on the top row, each take 4 nudges to fall off the grid resulting in 12 free spins. During the bonus game, Barbarian Respins are always activated and wild multipliers are not reset with new spins but tallied up for the duration. Scatters continue to appear and add free spins equal to the number of nudges it takes to remove them from the reel.
Finally, Barbarian Fury may ship with a feature buy option called the Nolimit Bonus. It costs 70 times your bet and guarantees that at least 3 scatters will land on the next spin. It doesn’t guarantee where they will land though which effects the overall number of free spins awarded.
Barbarian Fury Slot: Verdict
Whatever has sent the Nolimit City team on their current creative bender, long may it last. Barbarian Fury is another cracker of a slot, heavy on atmosphere, where features can stack up in a moment. Best results were had when good multipliers are posted early on in the Fury Spins. Combine a screen of the chief Barbarian at 250 times the stake with a solid multiplier during the bonus game (x8 was not uncommon) and you are well on your way to the games max potential of 8,785 times the stake. Be ready though. The message 'Volatility High' on the bottom right of the landing page is no exaggeration. Perhaps it's a warning because Barbarian Fury can be brutal on a bad day. On the flip side, when things are working well, it's great.
Barbarian Fury might not be as manic as Punk Rocker could be on tilt, but it's still a game that keeps you on your toes and can accelerate in an instant. It is also more evidence of the corner Nolimit City has turned and the strong direction they are taking with game design. Barbarian Fury can be tough going, and its stats and gameplay are not for the faint-hearted. But for dedicated gamblers, the rough ride has plenty to appreciate, especially if the barbarians can take a break from their assault on civilisation to let some of the wealth flow your way.
For more warrior themed action, also check out Nolimit City's follow-up Warrior Graveyard which offers wins of up to 10,000 times your stake.
Barbarian Fury is another stunning, intensely volatile, high reward, slot from Nolimit City that will undoubtedly help boost their market value.
