Baron Samedi Introduction
Now, here is a slot that might require an Aspirin before we start. This extravagant Yggdrasil creation centres around Baron Samedi who is the loa of the dead, a mischief-maker and the man who cannot die. Loa are the spirits of Haitian Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo and are, contrary to popular belief, not gods. Unlike saints or angels, they are not prayed to but served.
There are many different loa, each distinct being with their own unique personality traits, sacred rhythms, dances, songs, ritual symbols and specific modes of service. For example, Damballa who's considered one of the most important of the loa is the father of the sky and creator of all life. He rules the mind, the intellect and cosmic balance. Papa Legba is another essential loa who acts as a link between the loa and humanity and is believed to speak all human languages.
Baron Samedi, usually portrayed as a bad guy in popular culture due to his villain-like traits, is likely best known in the west from the 1973 James Bond movie Live And Let Die. As unique of a theme as it may appear to be, it's not the first time it's been tried in the world of iGaming. In August 2016, Endorphina released Voodoo, a fairly successful high variance 5x3 online slot available on Videoslots, Lapalingo, and PlayFrank for those of you who want to see what it's all about.
Baron Samedi is a Video Slot with 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 paylines playable on all devices between €0.25 and €125. It features 36 collectable features, including wilds, multipliers, guaranteed win lines, stacks and mystery symbols. The features are represented by tarot cards and every time at least two scatters hit the reels, three cards appear to bestow their bounty on the reels and also fill their corresponding collection.
Two scatters awards one respin with 3 features active while 3 or more scatters does the same for Free Spins round of 7-15 spins. Filling any of the 36 feature collections initiates 3 Collection Free Spins with the corresponding feature active. So seize the moment, mortal, as the baron will guarantee that the dark magic sides with you for feature combos unseen in the realm of the living.
Baron Samedi is an extremely ambitious slot and a massive undertaking by Yggdrasil that does not only shine through in the complex mechanics and gameplay but in the outstanding visuals as well. Set against a creepy tarot table surrounded by ceremonial objects, the reels spin along to an enigmatic and rhythmic sound loop that, must we point out, is pretty darn cool! Above the reel set are three empty card positions which come into play during the activation of the features that we will look into detail later in the review.
Baron Samedi Paytable & Symbols
The game includes 8 regular symbols that win if 3 or more are lined up in sequence on a payline. There is wild symbol that substitutes all regular symbols, a Free Spin symbol that only appears in the base game (worth 1000 times the stake should you land all 5 of them!) and a mystery symbol that only appears in Free Spins (more on that further below).
While the four low-value symbols come in the shape of various gems, the four premiums are represented by male and female voodoo dolls, the Baroness Samedi and Baron Samedi himself who will give you 4.8 times the stake should he appear across a full payline. As none of the symbols appears stacked on the reels in normal mode, players are heavily dependent on the feature card to generate wins.
Baron Samedi Collectable Cards
The game comes with a set of 36 collectable cards that each represent a feature. Furthermore, each card is ranked in strength from 1 to 4 - the higher the rank, the stronger it is:
- I - 10 cards to fill collection
- II- 20 cards to fill collection
- III- 40 cards to fill collection
- IV- 50 cards to fill collection
The cards are collected during the Voodoo respins and the free spins game in which 3 cards are dealt every round (more info below). Filling any of the 36 feature collections initiates 3 collection free spins (extra free spins) in which the collected card will be locked in the first (of three) card positions throughout the free spin session.
Baron Samedi Free Spins
Baron Samedi has three types of free spin games, all with the same basic mechanics but with differences in how they are carried out. In the main game, landing two scatter symbols will initiate one Voodoo respin. Players are dealt three cards followed by the spin itself. The Voodoo respins is a common occurrence in the main game and the only way really to trigger wins of any significance at all outside of the free spins. Another way to trigger these spins is by collecting a full set of a particular card feature which will initiate 3 collection free spins as explained previously.
What you really want to do, however, is to land 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols which award 7, 12 or 15 free spins respectively. The free spins frequency is unknown and kept a secret by Yggdrasil, but appears to be somewhere around 250-300 spins. It doesn't say anywhere whether or not the free spins game stands out from the Voodoo respin in any way, but to us at least, it appears as if the cards dealt are somewhat enhanced during the free spins feature.
Baron Samedi Conclusion
While it's undoubtedly one of the more complex slots that we have reviewed here on Bigwinboard, it's really not as perplexing as it first appears to be. As with most slots that do not follow the traditional rules we're used to, players will naturally feel a bit lost and disorientated at first. The attraction of online slots for most of us, however, is that it's all down to pure luck, so just like with any other slot, adjust the bet size and start spinning the reels and the rest will sort itself out. You will more than likely know within a few spins if you enjoy the slot or not.
Despite its complex nature it's well executed. With all the various collectable features there is much to explore, and the cumulative benefits are both engaging and entertaining. Baron Samedi is all about the free spins game in which there is a 1200 times the stake max win potential should you trigger the 10x multiplier and a full-screen wilds and/or Baron Samedi symbols.
Hardcore players that are more into conventional retro type slots will probably stay far away from this slot, but casual mainstream players are undeniably in danger of falling for the seductive powers of Baron Samedi.
