Battleship Direct Hit Megaways (WMS/Red7): Overview
The simple strategy game of Battleship for two players dates back to the 1930s when it was played with pencil and pad, before becoming a plastic board game in 1967, released by Milton Bradley. Today, you don’t need to go as far as purchasing the whole board game, and instead you can play this online slot developed by WMS and Red7. Battleship Direct Hit! takes you into the thick of the action, sailing on the high seas to locate enemy battleships. The inclusion of such high-quality graphics as Red7 has added to this one makes it all the more entertaining and compelling. The theme itself is quite unique, building upon the excitement of the board game and taking it to another level.
Playing the slot will introduce you to a layout of 6 reels and up to 7 rows. At the same time, Battleship Direct Hit features the popular Megaways engine, meaning that up to a total of 117,649 ways to win can be in operation on any given spin. You can play it across all devices from between 0.10 and €/£100 per spin.
Turning our attention to the visual side of Battleship Direct Hit!, it’s clear to see that Red7 has included some impressive graphics into it. The background depicts your own battleship, which you’re sailing on to locate the enemy vessels. At either side of the reels, you’ll see guns moving from left to right in search of them. Then, upon the reels is where you will see the slot’s various symbols. These begin with standard playing card symbols running from 9 through to A. Next in line come symbols of four different medals. The first three feature the bronze, silver and gold stars on them. Meanwhile, the fourth has a gold star and two smaller golden stars on either side of it. The highest paying standard symbol though, is the one that has the outline of the battleship on it. This one can reward you with up to 6 times your stake per single payline.
Battleship Direct Hit Megaways (WMS/Red7): Features
While we're fans of the theme and base gameplay, it certainly wouldn’t be the same without the inbuilt features that it provides. These start with the Cascading Wins. You’ll see this feature come into effect every time a win forms in the game. Essentially, all symbols that make up part of a winning combination will be destroyed and sunk. This means that they disappear from the reels and new symbols will fall from above. Should additional wins manage to form, then the cascades take place again. This continue on until you’re no longer able to form new wins.
Turret Fire is another feature that is present in Battleship Direct Hit!, and this one can activate randomly at the end of any base game spin. This takes place prior to any payouts being evaluated. If it does occur, then the turrets will unleash a barrage of fire onto the game’s reels. This will destroy lower paying symbols, which will subsequently be replaced by higher paying possibilities.
You may also see Missile Symbols come into play on the reels, too. Whenever they do appear, they’ll launch themselves directly upwards and towards the target above the reels. If you manage to destroy all of the areas of the target ship with missiles, then you’ll be able to win a set of Free Spins as well. The possible number of these depends upon the ships that your missiles connect with, but up to 50 can be won from such.
While playing the Free Spins round, you can see Missile Symbols continue coming into play. Moreover, destroying ships can win you jackpot prizes and extra spins (up to five extra spins or one of the four large jackpot totals). The jackpots can be seen on the right-hand side of the reels as the Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpots (of which the latter yields 2,500 times your stake). Not only that, but the wild symbol now also comes into play to help you with forming wins - it's only present during the game’s free spins round and on reels 2 through to 5 only.
Battleship Direct Hit Megaways (WMS/Red7): Verdict
With fond memories of playing the board game of Battleship as kids, the theme undoubtedly has a strong appeal. Unfortunately, the video slot is nowhere near as fun as the board game. For example, the appeal of the Megaways engine has been completely butchered by limiting the max win potential to no more than 2,500x. At the time this slot was made, WMS quite likely had no idea what they were doing or what players were going to expect of it being a Megaways slot. While the gameplay is rather entertaining and the slot is well crafted, Battleship Direct Hit! completely misses the target.
Based on the classic Battleship board game, Battleship Direct Hit Megaways misses the target altogether.
