Blazing Rainbows Slot
If slot developers were paid every time they added a rainbow, a leprechaun, or a pot of gold to a game, Ireland would probably have become the richest country on Earth by now. Blazing Rainbows takes its place in one of the most overcrowded corners of the slot market, arriving with all the usual ingredients. There are pots of gold, rainbow trails, lucky prizes, green colour schemes, and enough stereotypical Irish imagery to fill a tourism brochure. The challenge for any new release using this theme is finding a way to stand out. Unfortunately, that's where Playtech begins to struggle.
The game revolves around overlay symbols that remain active for several spins after landing. Whenever prize symbols or pots land on those marked positions, the rainbow trail feature activates, collecting the prize and potentially pulling down additional prize symbols from above. If multiple prize symbols stack together, a single trigger can generate a surprisingly lengthy collection sequence.
Some overlays also carry a x2 modifier, doubling everything collected during that particular trail. It's easily the most interesting part of the game and provides the occasional moment where an otherwise ordinary spin suddenly becomes much more valuable. The prize values themselves are fairly modest for the most part, ranging from small cash awards up to larger jackpot-style pot prizes. Mini, Minor, Major and Mega rewards can all appear, with the top fixed prize reaching 500x the bet.
Free spins are triggered by landing 3 or more scatters and award 6 spins. During the feature, overlays become persistent, remaining active until the bonus ends rather than disappearing after a few spins. The idea is simple enough: create more opportunities for rainbow trail collections and bigger prize chains.

The issue is that the feature never feels particularly exciting. Persistent overlays sound better on paper than they do in practice, and much of the bonus still revolves around waiting for prize symbols to land in the right places rather than actively building towards something bigger. A 40x bonus buy will undoubtedly attract some players. Compared to the increasingly absurd feature buy prices appearing elsewhere in the industry, it feels almost refreshing to see a bonus that doesn't require taking out a small mortgage. Whether the feature itself justifies buying repeatedly is another matter.
What surprised me most about Blazing Rainbows is how little ambition there seems to be behind it. Playtech have produced hundreds of slots over the years, and this feels like one assembled from spare parts left over from previous projects. Nothing is broken, nothing is offensively bad, but very little feels memorable either. The 95.90% RTP doesn't help its case. When a game already struggles to distinguish itself mechanically, an RTP below the industry average becomes another reason for players to look elsewhere.
There are certainly worse Irish-themed slots available. There are also far better ones. Blazing Rainbows lands somewhere awkwardly in the middle, functional enough to work, but lacking the personality, innovation, or excitement needed to leave much of an impression once the session ends. A rainbow is usually supposed to lead you towards treasure. This one mostly leads you towards a reminder that Playtech has made stronger games than this.
