Blue Wizard: Slot Overview

Blue Wizard was originally released by Quickspin owned company Playtech, then relaunched in 2019 by Rarestone Gaming, and was later followed on by a Megaways upgrade. Now Quickspin has stepped into the picture to power the game in order to widen the coverage.

Players who fell for the original slot's charms will be pleased or puzzled to know that Quickspin has chosen to leave the original game largely as it was. The background image of a sign pointing out a wizard's house in the woods remains, as does the ambient soundtrack. The only real difference from the original, really, is the use of Quickspin's UI, and the spinning reels are slightly better animated than before. Basically, Blue Wizard's aesthetics have remained the same, with a subtle polish applied to the whole production. Players who appreciated the physical land-based gaming vibe produced by the first Blue Wizard will be pleased to know this is as strong as ever.

Blue Wizard is played on a 5-reel, 3-row game board, equipped with 30 fixed paylines to land winning combinations of at least three matching symbols across. The theoretical return value has stayed pretty constant at 96.51%, while volatility is as high as ever. From the playthrough, it did seem the new Blue Wizard was more balanced in terms of dealing out fewer dead spins, though we might have coasted through a lucky patch that would even out over long time periods. Playable from 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin, this Blue Wizard version can be played on any device, but only at casinos not already offering the live Rarestone version.

Now for a bit of paytable info, starting with regular symbols. On the low side are gold and jewelled encrusted 10-A royals, followed by medium pay rings, books, cauldrons and owls. Mid pays are worth 2.5 to 6 times your stake for a five of a kind win, though scatters are worth more – we'll get to those soon. Wilds are where we find the Blue Wizard displayed, landing on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5. Wilds replace any normal pay symbol and expand if they can help form a win.

Blue Wizard: Slot Features

Keep an eye out for two more special symbols when playing Blue Wizard. Scatters trigger free spins, while landing enough of the crystal ball symbols activates the Fire Blaze Respin feature.

Free Spins

The castle embossed symbol is the scatter, and landing 3, 4, or 5 of them awards 1x, 10x, or 50x the stake, plus 6 free spins. During free spins, any wilds landing on the middle reel have a multiplier of x2, x4, x8, or x16 attached and apply to any win they are part of. Free spins can be retrigged again when the feature is active.

Fire Blaze Respin Feature

This feature can be triggered from the main game or free spins when at least 6 crystal ball symbols are in view. Each crystal ball displays a cash value of 1 to 50 times the bet or a star icon. Star icons reveal Mini, Minor, or Major jackpot prizes worth 20x, 100x, or 500x the bet, respectively.

The feature starts with the triggering crystal balls locked in position and 3 respins are awarded, which reset when new crystal ball symbols hit and also lock into position. The feature ends when no respins remain or when all positions are filled. In the latter case, the Grand prize worth 2,000x the bet is awarded.

Blue Wizard: Slot Verdict

You don't mess with a classic title, so the dated looks were no doubt deliberately left as it is on purpose to retain Blue Wizard's land-based feel. After all, it's a success because the looks and sounds do make you feel like you're standing at a cabinet bashing away on the spin button.

The peculiar thing about Blue Wizard is just how playable it is. There was some mysterious x-factor at work here that is hard to pin down. It's not the game's standard set of features; the graphic standard is decent yet not spectacular, so what is it? Maybe it's something as bizarre as the hypnotic tapping sounds the reels make when they stop spinning in conjunction with the win celebration noises. Whatever the secret sauce is, there is something about Blue Wizard which made it oddly comforting to play. Forget innovation, forget anything ground-breaking; for some relaxing physical style gaming on any device, Blue Wizard was a strangely enjoyable experience.
