Book of Cleopatra: Overview
Developer Stakelogic roll out a perennial crowd favourite, the ever rehashed ‘Book of ‘ style in their slot Book of Cleopatra. If you’ve played one, you’ve sort of played them all, to a degree. It might be a little hard to get super excited over test driving yet another ‘Book of’ slot since there are so many clambering over each other in a bid to get players’ attention. You never know, though. Modern developers are a creative bunch, so let’s clear the slate and enter the fray with as open a mind as possible.
As everyone knows, Cleopatra was the queen of Egypt, so it is to that otherworldly part of the planet we venture. The 5-reel, 10-payline grid is located in a temple structure, all pillars, statues, and moody crimson skies - the whole shebang. Stakelogic proved their Ancient Egypt chops with Gods of Death, but Book of Cleopatra isn’t quite as atmospheric. It does look like a classic entry into the genre though, plus the soundtrack wafts around in an Arabic manner, so it is a pretty good setting for some book action.
Playable from 10 p/c to £/€50 per spin and with a solid RTP of 96.21%, Book of Cleopatra is a highly volatile slot that stays true to its roots by keeping the rules nice and simple. There are just 10 paylines in operation, for players to hit winners of three or more matching symbols on.
The symbols include 10 to Ace royals as the low pays, followed by Cat Gods, Bird Gods, a Book of Dead-style Pharaoh, and Cleopatra. Symbols are as high is it gets in this genre which is nice to see. No surprises over Cleopatra being the most valuable at 500 times the stake for five of a kind. Helping matters, in more ways than one, is the Book symbol. One of its jobs is wild, where it can substitute for any other pay symbol.
Book of Cleopatra: Features
If you’ve played any ‘Book of’ style game or a Stakelogic slot, then there won’t be much here to surprise. The show stopper is, of course, the free spins bonus game, as well as a handy buy feature, and a gamble option.
The book symbol is the most desirable one during the base game. Not only does it act as a wild, but it is also the scatter - 3 or more trigger the free spins bonus game, paying 2x, 20x, or 200 times the stake for 3, 4, or 5 in view respectively.
Before free spins begin, two events take place. Firstly, you can gamble for more free spins. The initial amount is 10, but players may increase or decrease this number by +5 or -5 per gamble. If you reach 25, the feature automatically moves to the next step. Reach 0, and the bonus game comes crashing to an end.
On the next step, the book flips open to choose one of the regular pay symbols. During free spins, this chosen symbol expands to cover the full reel, if winning combinations can be created. Full reel expanded symbols award all 10 paylines and do not need to be adjacent to do so. As a one-off example, expanded symbols on reels 1, 4, 5 payout.
Can’t get enough of the bonus game but don’t want to wait? Stakelogic has added a bonus buy feature to short cut the process. For the cost of 80 times the stake, the free spins bonus game is triggered on the next spin. For the record, scatter wins are still valid even if you have paid for them to land.
The final segment in this section is the obligatory Stakelogic gamble feature. Each time players get a win; they have the chance to collect the reward or gamble it. This is pretty standard fare. One card is located in the middle of the screen face down. Players guess the correct card colour for double or nothing, or, guess the right suit for quadruple or nothing. If it’s a fail, the win is forfeit; if it’s a win, players may collect or gamble again. The gamble feature is limited to up to 5x or 2,500 coins. The gamble feature may also be available after free spins have concluded.
Book of Cleopatra: Verdict
Other than the lack of originality, there is little else to complain about in general with Book of Cleopatra. One thing we found annoying is the inability to skip count ups when you land a winner or during the bonus when symbols expand. Still, Stakelogic has captured the look and spirit nicely, symbol values are high, and the gameplay is as good as any other ‘Book of’ slot. Fans should thoroughly enjoy the result. As will any player looking for a straight forward, uncomplicated time. Individual spin potential is in the region of 5,000 times your stake, so there are plenty of rewards to be had.
Developers can’t really redo these slots without offering something new, no matter how insignificant the twist might be. Book of Cleopatra has a couple of decent elements that provide individuality. Having the chance to gamble for more free spins should charm some players, and is super satisfying when it works out. The bonus buy functionality will probably have an even wider appeal. ‘Book of’ slots are infamous for their expanding symbols during free spins. So, having the option of sidestepping the base game to head straight to them is a juicy temptation.
All up, Book of Cleopatra is a competent slot in a crowded category. It is hard to find faults since Stakelogic has stayed so close to the formula, but its new bits do help it stand out.
Book of Cleopatra is a capable ‘Book of’ slot that offers everything you’d expect, but comes with some annoyances that make it less enjoyable to play.
