Castle of Terror 2: Slot Overview
Horror isn't everyone's preferred emotional outlet, but those drawn to it find a genre pulsing with adrenaline, psychological exploration, safe fear, and more. Combine those traits with the thrills inherent in gambling, and you can see why software providers and players are attracted to the possibilities horror can bring. Developer Big Time Gaming combined them well in its online slot Castle of Terror, released in 2022, and has since made a sequel, Castle of Terror 2, a slot which experiments with alternative horrific subject matter and a new set of features.
The frights in Castle of Terror were provided by a group of blood sucking, pointy-fanged, nosferatu, inhabiting a gothic slab of a castle atop a hill overlooking a picturesque town, like an Eastern European nightmarish folk tale. Castle of Terror 2 gets its spine-tingling on from a different source altogether. Clues come from a Frankenstein's monster head resting above the reels and a couple of big green hands on either side of them. A big gothic castle and a misty graveyard are where the base game is played, presumably this is where the scientist gets his body parts, before transitioning indoors for the free spins bonus round, where a crazed laboratory full of gadgets, dials, and flashing lights produces the madness. Both phases are exceptionally visually detailed, deliciously darkly alive.

Castle of Terror 2's play area has shrunk down a bit from the original, so the action is now held on a 5x4 gaming area, possessing 1,024 ways to win. Combinations are created from the leftmost reel when matching symbols land on adjacent reels. The game is available in three RTP configurations, with a 96.48% figure brewing the highest, while the math model volatility has been rated by its maker as 'very high'. Bet selection depends on the max exposure setting, but can vary from a minimum of $/€0.10 to a maximum of $/€10-40.
The game's pay symbols include 9-A low pays, and four high pays called Lungs, Lady, Old Man, and Brains. Wins made from 5 matching royals award 0.3x to 0.5x the bet, or 0.6x to 1.5x is paid when five matching high pays create a winning combination. Wilds substitute for all symbols except scatters, and they land on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Castle of Terror 2: Slot Features

Castle of Terror 2's features are base game Bonus Respins, free spins, a group of modifiers, and a couple of feature buys.
Bonus Respin
In the base game, landing a single scatter awards a Bonus Respin. The type of respin depends on which reel the scatter appeared on:
- Reel 1 Brains - all reels are enhanced with extra Brains symbols.
- Reel 2 Alive - a random multiplier of x3 to x10 is applied to all wins.
- Reel 3 Shock - a random multiplier of x2 to x5 is added to wilds that spin in with the reels.
- Reel 4 Monster - at random, the Brains, Old Man, Lady, or Lungs symbol becomes wild on reels 2 to 5.
- Reel 5 Horror - a random reel (2-5) is filled with wilds.
Free Spins
Landing 2 or 3 scatters in the base game, or if one or more scatters appear on a Bonus Respin, 10 free spins are awarded. Free spins benefit from a win multiplier that starts at x1 and increases after every winning spin. Free spins are played with 2 or 3 active bonuses, which are determined by the reels the triggering scatters (including the initial scatter that triggered the Bonus Respin if applicable) landed on. One scatter may land per reel, up to a maximum of three scatters in total.
- Brains - all reels are enhanced with extra Brains symbols.
- Alive - the free spins multiplier starts at x3, x5, x8, or x10. If free spins are triggered from a Bonus Respin, the multiplier is carried over.
- Shock - wilds that spin in with the reels have a random multiplier of x2 to x5 applied.
- Monster - at random, the Brains, Old Man, Lady, or Lungs symbol becomes wild on reels 2 to 5. If free spins trigger from a Bonus Respin, the chosen symbol is carried over.
- Horror - a random reel (2-5) is filled with wilds on each free spin.
During the free spins round, landing 2 or more scatters awards +4 free spins, with every scatter beyond the second awarding +2 spins.
Feature Buy
Castle of Terror 2's feature buy has two options. For 100x the bet, players may buy free spins with 2 active bonuses, while free spins with 3 active bonuses cost 300x to buy.

Castle of Terror 2: Slot Verdict
Castle of Terror 2 goes to show that lightning can strike twice, in this case, kinda literally, as Big Time Gaming has crafted another strong entry in the horror slot genre. The sequel abandons the vampiric tones of the original and much of the gameplay for a Frankenstein-inspired sequel of stitched-together visuals, volatile action, and revamped features. One of the game's strongest assets is its aesthetics, which paint a terrifying world of dead, undead, and ambition let loose to bend the very rules of nature. Well, not that terrifying, this being a slot after all, but the top-notch audiovisuals pull players into Castle of Terror 2 before letting the gameplay take over to handle the other side of the entertainment coin.
Interestingly, Castle of Terror 2's gameplay brought Big Time Gaming's Max Megaways slots to mind more than Castle of Terror. Not so much Max Megaways 3, since there's no Megadozer, but the way free spins trigger with certain modifiers active was a familiar touch. Solid modifiers are on offer too, from full reel wilds, wild multipliers, and symbols to wild transformations. Add the increasing win multiplier during free spins, and Castle of Terror 2 cooks up a potent combo. All good stuff, yet if we step back for a moment to view the full picture, Castle of Terror 2 is in some ways a smaller game than its predecessor. The gaming grid has reduced in size, the RTP is less generous than before and winning potential has been trimmed from 61,720x down to 20,160x. It feels like the edges have been rounded off, to a degree, to make the game less extreme, more fit for general consumption, perhaps.
That by no means makes Castle of Terror 2 an easy-going game, or one which lacks bite. Mirroring the rhythm of horror storytelling, its high volatility may translate into stretches of tension, followed by electrifying bursts of reward, where suspense (especially as each reel stops in free spins) builds before chaos potentially erupts. In short, Castle of Terror 2 delivers another slot-based jolt of horror that might not be as statistically extreme as the original, but is no less satisfying for it.
It might be less extreme than the original, but Castle of Terror 2 impresses with strong atmosphere and electrifying mechanics.
