Charlie Chance XreelZ: Slot Overview
Editor’s note: This review evaluates Charlie Chance XreelZ on its early access state as the game is still under production. We plan on revisiting this review once the game is completed.
Players, let’s spare a minute for poor Charlie Chance. Here’s a man whose fortune bobs back and forward like a demented see-saw. One minute he’s being offered a fortune from strange women; the next, he’s in the underworld wondering where it all went wrong. Apparently, in his haste for quick riches, Charlie neglected to read the fine print and now finds himself battling for his very survival. On the plus side, it is still possible for players to collect riches, even more so now in this remake of Play’n GO‘s original slot Charlie Chance in Hell To Pay.
On the visual front, we get the same charming early black and white animated looks carrying the action. However, several major changes have been made to Charlie Chance XreelZ slot, mechanically speaking. This one also has a touch more colour, as the game grid has grown from 3×3 to 5 reels in size, making the leap from fruit slot gaming to something more modern, whilst also expanding win ways to 243 in the process. Complementing the old school looks is a soundtrack from a swinging era, which creates the sort of carefree irreverence found in early Disney/ Betty Boop style cartoon strips.
Charlie’s main adversary certainly has a Betty Boop vibe, but she is a whole lot more serious this time around. The game engine reflects this shift too, where volatility has increased from 7 to 9 out of 10, and the default RTP has risen a titch to 96.25%. RTP can be found lower, depending on the market, to 94.79% or less, so be on the lookout for that. The biggest shift, numbers-wise, is winning potential, where a significantly larger pile of cash is up for grabs. Descending to the underworld is possible on any device, where bets of 10 p/c to £/€100 are available.
Despite the fancy XreelZ name, wins hit in the normal manner – at least three matching pay symbols are needed left to right from reel one to connect for a win. Here, 8 pays make up the table, split between 4 low values, 3 mids and 1 high pay. From the mids on up, where we find things like imps and bells, a winning combination of 5 symbols in length is worth a payout of 20 times your stake. An intricately designed wild symbol has the same value as the top premium, as well as substituting other pay tiles to complete a line. It is also linked to the XreelZ feature; let’s take a look.
Charlie Chance XreelZ: Slot Features
How the XreelZ mechanic works is that a wild win in the base game creates a highlighted reel. At the same time, there is a multiplier reel located above the game grid, spinning horizontally. The multiplier which lands on the horizontal strip above the highlighted reel is awarded to all wins created from the respective reel.
As well as this feature is Second Chance respins and free spins. When 2 or more scatters land, Second Chance Respins are triggered. The scatter’s reels are held in place as the rest respin. If another scatter lands, the process is repeated until no more scatters land.
As for the free spins, these come in three different versions. The one you get to play corresponds to the number of triggering scatters. The differences between them are covered below, but what they all have in common is that the XreelZ mechanic is active on every spin without needing wild symbols to trigger it;
- 3 scatters in view award Flaming Free Spins with multipliers of x2, x3, and x5.
- 4 scatters award Inferno Free Spins with multipliers of x5, x6, and x8.
- 5 scatters award Hellfire Free Spins with multipliers of x8, x9, and x25.
In all free spin games, any wilds that land remain on the reels for the duration of the feature, moving to a new position on each spin.
Charlie Chance XreelZ: Slot Verdict
It might look similar, but this is a very different Charlie Chance than we encountered the last time. Gone is the goofy, slapstick nature, replaced by one much heavier, darker, and more serious. Whatever Charlie did has really ticked the underworld lady off, and she means business, resulting in a less happy-go-lucky experience than the one found previously. The payoff for players from the attitude adjustment is a more volatile game, loaded with vastly greater rewards. Charlie Chance XreelZ has the same 1930s feel as before, though from there, the similarities end, and it’s a whole new ball game.
The XreelZ mechanic is pretty effective, though essentially it’s a random win multiplier, a concept Play’n GO has used in many of their games. It does boost free spins appeal; it has to be said since you know every hit will be exponentially larger than most from the base game. With a x25 multiplier lurking, you might be wondering what Charlie Chance XreelZ is packing in the max win department. The original came with a figure of 6,666x, while the extra reels, ways, and new features push that to 20,000 times the stake. Play’n GO’s tendency to produce ever higher-paying games continues.
Charlie Chance XreelZ is a relatively simple game that shares little but the aesthetics of the first. Charlie’s playful antics might saunter away as ever on the surface, yet beneath the sheen lies a totally new engine, designed to thrill a different gambling clique altogether.
Similar to the original in name and theme only, the new Charlie Chance XreelZ slot is a higher-powered game in all regards.
