Cleopatra 2: Slot Overview

The next time you find yourself at the desert, grab a handful of sand and carefully loosen your grip to release the grains. If you add up each one floating off in the breeze, you'd come up with a figure pretty close to the number of Egyptian themed slots available on the market. Okay, a slight exaggeration, yet there are a lot, and in between the dozens that are released each year, one or two do something to make them stand out. One such was Cleopatra, a land-based classic for IGT that later made a successful online crossover in 2012, also becoming hugely popular. It might have taken nearly a decade to cash in, but in 2021 the studio followed up with more Egyptian queen themed action courtesy of a sequel titled Cleopatra 2.

The further you progress into Cleopatra 2, the more changes are uncovered, though the overall vibe has remained relatively the same. Visually, there have been a few subtle upgrades; the 5-reel, 20-payline grid looks less like Book of Ra than the original, and IGT has swapped the columns of the background image for a traditional view of the Giza Pyramids. Clichéd, but hey, they are the most prized photo spot in Egypt - a title they've held for several millennia. The acid jazz soundtrack of the original is gone, replaced with something almost as non-traditional. There are touches of Ancient Egypt going on, yet the chanting and hand drums mix all sorts of cultures in there too. Wait till the bonus game triggers and the tempo increasing on every free spin is almost trance-inducing by the end – especially if you hit a few retriggers.

Bound to fill physical casinos across the globe, Cleopatra 2 is also available on any device from desktops to mobile phones, offering stakes from 20 p/c per spin. Like the last one, Cleopatra 2 is quite a volatile sojourn across the sands, generating a confusing RTP range of 93.17% to 95.88%. Since no further player input or strategy is required other than hit the play button, it's not made clear why the RTP varies so much, and the ambiguity is a bit of a turn-off.

Players who liked the uncomplicated nature of the first one will appreciate the fact there's nothing complex about Cleopatra 2 either. Wins hit when three or more of a kind line up on a payline in the base game and during triggered free spins. IGT has swapped out the symbols, however, the premiums at least, where Bastet, Horus, and Anubis make up the 3 premium symbols worth up to 25 times the bet for five of a kind. On the low side, the same royal symbols appear, except for the 9, that one has been dropped.

The game's logo symbol is when things start to get real, as five of them on a payline will get you a 2,500x payout. This Cleo II symbol is also wild, landing anywhere to replace any regular pay symbol. When used to complete a win, Cleo II wilds also double the value it would normally have been.

Cleopatra 2: Slot Features

Cleopatra II - free spins

In the spirit of simplicity, the only other feature in Cleopatra 2 is a round of free spins. To unlock their bounty, you'll need at least 3 Sphinx scatters in view to send you to the bonus round. It starts by selecting one of 3 boxes to determine how many free spins you wind up with. The more scatters triggered the feature, the larger the number will be. So, 3, 4, or 5 would award 5-15, 8-18, or 10-20, plus a payout of 3x, 10x, or 2,600x the bet, respectively.

During free spins, the value of scatter wins decreases, but in its place, premium symbols now payout for two of a kind combinations. What makes free spins stand out is that a win multiplier is also introduced, starting at x1. On each following spin, the win multiplier increases by +1 – whether a win occurred or not. Free spins can be retriggered up to 50, and the multiplier increases even on retriggered free spins. This means, at most, an x50 multiplier will be waiting should players make it to the very end.

Cleopatra 2: Slot Verdict

As most will know, we don't review a lot of IGT games here, yet Cleopatra 2 popped up due to the pedigree and popularity of the original slot. This will no doubt be the attitude of many players as well. Cleopatra 2 would be pretty average as a one-off game, though it does boast massive win numbers. However, the original was hugely popular, so there's bound to be a substantial crowd of curious players who might feel drawn to fire up the sequel, if nothing else, just to see what's new. On that front, not a lot, really, which is probably a good thing. It would have been tantamount to the slots form of sacrilege if IGT had decided to give an old classic an uber-modern overhaul.

Fortunately for fans, they haven't, but there are a few new things to discover in a game with a palpable physical feel. The biggest difference is that Cleopatra is a much higher stakes game packing five times as much potential as part one. Having a progressive multiplier guaranteed to increase on each spin is an exciting proposal. It's been done before, though not reaching the heights of 50,000x the bet available in Cleopatra 2. As mentioned, the music in free spins is absolutely nuts, so when combined with a sizeable hit, it is a strangely exhilarating moment.

Combining big potential with familiar looks and feels is almost a guaranteed recipe for success. IGT will be banking on nostalgia to pull in a few return punters and a 50k win number to help others overlook its confusing RTP value.

Dated already sure, but Cleopatra 2 is bound to entertain players who found joy spinning the original back in the day.
