Curse of Ra: Slot Overview

Since, as veteran Ancient Egyptian slot enthusiasts can probably tell you, Ra was the god of the sun, any curse he conjured would probably be a rather nasty one for those on the receiving end. In this case, though, Curse of Ra is more likely just a snappy title developer Four Leaf Gaming has come up with for an Ancient Egyptian-themed online slot. The studio has used the occasion to roll out things like its Super Spinner and other favoured features in an Ancient Egyptian setting, though to provide individuality; the provider has included a Guaranteed Win effect and a free spins round where roaming wilds with multipliers may accrue on the board.

Two statues stand on guard next to Curse of Ra's gaming grid, while above it, the Super Spinner wheel slowly rotates. Whilst a totally adequate looking location for gamblers in the mood for an Ancient Egyptian-flavoured slot, Curse of Ra wasn't the most inspiring one to look at. There is no sweeping romantic view of a Giza Plateau-style scene, no steampunk twist, and no heavy ancient atmosphere. Curse of Ra puts on a pleasant view; that is about it.

Played on a 5-reel, 3-row gaming matrix, players get 20 paylines for landing winning combinations of symbols along, left to right, from the leftmost reel onwards. A medium-high volatile slot with an RTP of 96%, players may select a stake of 20 c to $/€100 per spin, with several optional betting extras covered below. When using the Activate feature buy, the RTP stays at 96%.

Jack to Ace card ranks with little carvings upon them are Curse of Ra's low pay symbols, while its highs are an Ankh, an Eye of Horus, the jackal God Anubis, and the bird God Horus as the highs. Landing a 5 OAK low pay win awards 5 to 10 times the bet, increasing to 25 to 100x for hitting 5 matching premiums along a payline. Colourful scarab wilds may appear on all reels. Wilds substitute for any regular pay symbols and have the same value as the highest picture symbol when making wins of themselves.

Curse of Ra: Slot Features

Curse of Ra's 'newer' parts are its Guaranteed Win feature and free spins, where it is possible to add Flying Scarab Wilds to the screen with multipliers. The rest of the extras are things like the Bonus Booster, Bonus Replay, Super Spinner, and Nitro Spins.

Guaranteed Win Feature

Occasionally, on a non-winning spin, the symbols are rearranged to create a guaranteed win.

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters in the base game triggers 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. Free spins can be activated for 750 coins or 75x the bet. Flying Scarab Wilds move position each spin. Free spins start with 1 Flying Scarab Wild, and scatters are collected in free spins. Every 3 collected scatters grants a new Flying Scarab Wild and awards +3 free spins. Any additional Wild Flying Scarabs have multipliers of x2, x3, x5, and x10.

Bonus Booster

The Bonus Booster may be used to gamble all or some free spins for a chance to win 1, 2, or 3 extra free spins. The more spins gambled, the higher the chance of winning. The gamble can be repeated, and the maximum number of free spins available is 25.

Bonus Replay

This feature lets players gamble their free spins winnings for a chance to replay the round by spinning a win or lose wheel - if the free spins win was under a threshold. A winning spin awards a new free spins round starting from the Round Booster but the previous winnings are not carried over. A losing spin returns you to the base game.

Super Spinner

Any time a coin overlay appears on a low-pay symbol, it is collected. The Super Spinner can be triggered whenever a coin is collected. When triggered, the Super Spinner awards 80x-5,000x the bet, 10-25 free spins, or 10-25 Nitro Spins. The Super Spinner can be bought for 500 coins or 75x the bet or combined with collected coins to reduce the cost.

Nitro Spins

Activating Nitro Spins increases the bet by 50% or costs 4 coins per spin. When Nitro Spins are active, scatters are increased to trigger the bonus more frequently, there is an increased chance of the Guaranteed Win feature occurring, coins are collected more frequently, and the Super Spinner triggers more often. The RTP when using Nitro Spins is 96.14%-96.16%.

Curse of Ra: Slot Verdict

Since launching, Four Leaf Gaming has bounced between common and not-so-common slot themes from the icy realms of Everest to the well-trod underground caverns of Gold Rush Frenzy Megaways. Curse of Ra's so-so handling of more common subject matter was part of the reason why the game failed to impress much. It felt like a case of the studio simply wanting an Ancient Egyptian slot to attach its regular features to, such as Nitro Spins, the Super Spinner, and the additional gambling options. It's not a bad set of features by any means, and players who like a ton of options at their fingertips are catered for, but the whole set-up can feel a tad repetitively formulaic after a while.

These repeat gameplay extras must be in demand, though, if Four Leaf Gaming keeps releasing slots with them. Furthermore, the gameplay elements that have been tailor-made for Curse of Ra are potentially useful. The minor one, Guaranteed Win shuffles, might be helpful for giving engagement levels a boost when it triggers. Roaming multiplier wilds are generally a positive inclusion in a game, too - Slotmill's Tyrant's Fall is an excellent example. The Bonus Booster might be tempting here since one would assume the more free spins, the greater the chance of adding extra Flying Wild Scarabs. Since the game has a win cap of 10,000x, there is room here for Flying Scarab Wilds to do good things.

Despite the pluses, Curse of Ra wasn't a game with a major 'ooh' factor. One issue was that it didn't seem like a game the developer had a huge amount of interest in. Whereas some slots feel like their makers got totally into the theme and took the opportunity for a fun, deep dive, Flying Scarab Wilds felt like a surface skim of the topic, as if Four Leaf Gaming simply wanted to wrap an Ancient Egyptian covering over its regular collection of features. Maybe not, but that's the impression formed during the review.

Curse of Ra felt like an excuse for Four Leaf Gaming to bundle its usual features in an Ancient Egyptian skin as much as an opportunity to explore what the genre has to offer.
