In its efforts to curb unregulated gambling, especially within the US, Twitch has initiated bans on several casino sites (Roobet and Stake being two of them) that had gained traction through streamer endorsements and sponsorships.
Recently, a streamer from Denmark, who preferred to remain unnamed, faced a fine of approximately $1,500 for engaging in gambling on a non-licensed website in Denmark.
According to a statement issued on August 30 by the Danish gambling watchdog Spillemyndigheden, the influencer was penalized for promoting gambling operators lacking the necessary Danish licensing.
The watchdog’s intervention led to the involvement of the local police and other regulatory bodies. Upon investigation, they concluded that the streamer had indeed breached local regulations, leading to a fine of DK 10,000, which translates to about $1,500.
This incident has alarmed many in the streaming community, as this is the first time the Danish Gambling Regulator has taken action against a streamer for endorsing illicit gambling activities.
The promotion of gambling on streaming channels has not been without its pitfalls. For instance, renowned broadcaster DNP3 recently shared his struggles, revealing that his involvement in gambling streams led to a severe gambling problem, leaving him financially drained.
