Disorder: Slot Overview

Human beings are complex creatures, and the 'face' we present to the outside world often bears little to no relation to what we're thinking or feeling within. Negative impulses may be quashed in order not to upset the herd, but sometimes, they envelop a person, causing them to perform dark, disturbing deeds. Such is the case in software provider Nolimit City's online slot Disorder, which tracks the journey of what seems to be an average, ordinary, everyday Joe into stark raving lunacy. Not only is this a psychological study of a dangerously broken man, it also acts as a prequel to the studio's disturbing Mental slots, with links both mechanical and thematic.

If ever a game had a split personality, it's Disorder. It starts off as the very picture of 50s/60s success, depicting a big house, car, swimming pool, cute family, and dog - the very pinnacle of WASP aspirations attained. A soothing doo wop tune completes a picture of successful, relaxed, stability. However, not all is as it seems. Beneath the perfect exterior lies a roiling, seething ball of chaos just waiting for the cracks to appear. This it finds in the father/husband figure of John, who throws off the veneer of sane respectability, plunging both his family and players into the wild depths of psychological despair as they move deeper into the game, where links to Mental become more apparent.

Disorder slot
Disorder slot - base game

The gaming area is a dynamic 6-reel grid with symbols landing in a 4-3-4-3-4-3 pattern, with 1,728 ways to win. A great deal of symbol splitting can take place, though, drastically increasing the number of winning ways. Whilst it doesn't reach the extreme edge of the volatility spectrum, an 8 out of 10 classification means Disorder is a highly volatile slot, and it is available in three RTP configurations, with 96.11% is the highest. For stake selection, the minimum bet allowed is $/€0.20 while the maximum is $/€100.

Disorder has ten regular paying symbols, each one is depicted in four varying levels of degradation depending on the game phase. The lower value five are Household symbols worth 0.3x to 0.9x for 6-of-a-kind, whereas the higher value five are Family symbols worth 1.05x to 3x the bet for a 6 OAK combination. The doggy looks particularly sad in its final incarnation, while the other members of the family get progressively more terrifying. A cascade mechanic removes winning symbols and fills gaps with a symbol drop, repeating as long as new wins appear. When wilds are on the reels, they are able to replace any regular paying symbol to help make wins.

Disorder: Slot Features

Disorder slot
Disorder slot - Obsessive Compulsive Spins

Like personalities, Disorder has plenty of features, such as Fire Frames, Enhancer Cells and modifiers, three bonus rounds - Obsessive Compulsive Spins, Antisocial Personality Spins, Severe Dissociative Identity Spins, plus boosters and bonus buys.

Fire Frames

Fire Frames randomly appear on the reels. Any symbol that lands in a Fire Frame splits into 2 parts. Regular pay symbols can be split into a maximum of 16, and scatters landing in a Fire Frame are upgraded to super scatters.

Enhancer Cells

Enhancer Cells sit below reels 2, 4, and 6. The Enhancer Cell on reel 2 activates when 4 Fire Frames appear; reels 2 and 4 Enhancer Cells activate when 7 Fire Frames appear, and all three Enhancer Cells activate when 9 Fire Frames appear. When the reel 6 Enhancer Cell is activated, every 2 additional Fire Frames reactivate all Enhancer Cells. Each Cell can reveal one of these symbols:

  • Molotov - Randomly selects a regular pay symbol and splits all instances of it, up to 16. It converts itself to the selected symbol.
  • Delusion - Randomly selects a regular pay symbol and transforms all instances of it into the highest paying symbol on the reels. It also converts itself into that highest paying symbol.
  • Paranoia Multiplier - Adds a random multiplier of x1 to x999 to the win multiplier, and converts itself into a wild. The multiplier applies to all wins from the moment it is revealed till the end of the round.
  • Nuclear Wild - Transforms all regular pay symbols on its reel and itself into wilds.
  • xBomb - Removes all regular pay symbols not part of a winning combination, causing new symbols to drop in before the win evaluation. Any instances of winning symbols in non-winning positions are not removed by the xBomb. xBombs also increase the win multiplier by 1 and convert into a wild symbol.
  • Family symbol - One of the 5 family symbols.

Bonus Mode

The number of free spins awarded depends on the triggering symbols. Each scatter awards +2 spins, while each super scatter is worth +3 spins. This applies on the triggering spin and during bonus rounds. Fire Frames are more likely to land during free spins, and multipliers awarded in the base game do not get carried over to bonus mode.

Disorder slot
Disorder slot - Antisocial Personality Spins
  • Obsessive Compulsive Spins - Landing 3 scatters, including up to 1 super scatter, triggers 6+ Obsessive Compulsive Spins. During this feature, landing 2 or 3 super scatters upgrades the round to Antisocial Personality Spins, while landing 4 super scatters upgrades the feature to Severe Dissociative Identity Spins. In this round, the win multiplier and Fire Frames reset after each spin.
  • Antisocial Personality Spins - Landing 3 scatters, including at least 2 super scatters, triggers this feature with 8+ free spins. During it, landing 2 super scatters upgrades the round to Severe Dissociative Identity Spins. In this bonus round, the win multiplier count does not reset.
  • Severe Dissociative Identity Spins - Landing 4 super scatters awards Severe Dissociative Identity Spins. Fire Frames remain sticky, and the win multiplier does not reset.
  • Extra Spin - When Antisocial Personality Spins or Severe Dissociative Identity Spins end, players may get the chance to buy an extra spin at the end of the round, which keeps the win multiplier and any sticky Fire Frames of the previous spin. The cost of the extra spin must be lower than or equal to the total win.

Nolimit Booster & Bonus Buys

The Boosters available in Disorder are:

  • Bonus Booster - At 2x the bet, players are more likely to activate bonus mode.
  • Fire Booster - Costs 4x the bet to increase the chance of activating bonus mode and landing more Fire Frames in the base game.
  • Enhancer Booster - Costs 15x the bet to guarantee 9 Fire Frames (more may appear in upcoming spins), plus bonus mode is more likely to be triggered.

It's possible to buy Obsessive Compulsive Spins, Antisocial Personality Spins, Severe Dissociative Identity Spins, or a lucky draw for 80x, 300x, 800x, or 370x the bet, respectively.

Disorder: Slot Verdict

Disorder is a very clever game, almost meta in the way it's linked to past releases from Nolimit City's portfolio. Not just any past releases, either, but Mental and Mental 2 are two of the most disturbing slots on the market. What makes Disorder so interesting is not only the way it's set up as a prequel, but also the way Nolimit City has created a gripping psychological study of a man's descent into chaos. John's multi-faceted nature is expertly mirrored by the slot itself, which flips from the base game's charmed life success to a free spins journey into despair, which gets more desperate as players move to higher-tier bonus rounds where the scenery darkens, symbols deteriorate, and the music is more suspenseful. The jolt of returning to the base game after exploring the depths of John's psyche in bonus mode is shockingly abrupt.

Delving deeper into bonus rounds isn't just about peeling back John's complex layers; it's also about strengthening the features. One thing setting Disorder apart from Mental is that there is no stickiness to its entry-level Obsessive Compulsive Spins feature - Fire Frames, and the win multiplier resets after each free spin. This adds extra urgency to upgrade to the next two modes, where the win multiplier, then both the multi and Fire Frames, do not reset. It makes for a less head-scratching game than Mental, one which is easier to follow what is going on. And what this largely boils down to is getting Fire Frames on the screen, as abundantly as possible. Both for their ability to split symbols (thereby increasing ways to win), and also to trigger features from Enhancer Cells. While it's not as chaotic as those that preceded it, and the 23,500x max win is the lowest of the Mental family, Disorder is capable of moments of reel-based mania, and is arguably the more user-friendly of the three, in some ways.

Mechanically, and statistically, Disorder doesn't match the insanity levels of Mental. But as a prequel idea coupled with the excellent way Nolimit City has split the game between staid respectability and pure insanity, its voyage through Jungian archetypes from persona to shadow, and its general ability to cause mayhem make Disorder a must-see for Mental fans.

Bigwinboard Summary

Disorder might not be as twisted as its predecessors, but as a sort of prequel, its psychological roller coaster ride should delight fans of the Mental slots.
