Dog Town Deal: Slot Overview

In the art world, dogs playing card games is nothing new. Artists have been churning them out for over a hundred years; a series of oil paintings from Cassius Marcellus Coolidge from around the turn of the 20th century is perhaps the best-known. One, called 'Poker Game', sold at auction in 2015 for the cool sum of $658,000. It is perhaps images such as these that were bubbling beneath the Quickspin consciousness when designing Dog Town Deal. In this game, players join a pack of canines for a night of gambling, where cards are dealt to make Blackjack hands via an online slot reel set.

The setting is the basement of the Dog Town Casino, a joint that's still cranking when others around town are shutting up for the night. The town in question is New Orleans, and there's no explanation as to why players are heading to The Big Easy other than why not? It's as good a spot as any. Since dogs are humans' best friends, so it's said, let's introduce you to the chums. Ophelia's a singer from the Midnight Hour club who's brought Leroy Brown, her pianist, along for the night out. There's Boogaloo artist Miguel 'Miso' Sosa, taking a break from a tour, and finally, Bazza, a London card shark.

The reason we went through the bother of introducing the poochies is that rather than being a high-powered gambling machine, Dog Town Deal is a charming slot full of colourful characters, all getting up to a bit of low-key fun with the cards. If this doesn't sound appealing, then Dog Town Deal might not be the right match. For one, Quickspin has rated Dog Town Deal's volatility as 2 out of 5, so it'll be a better suit for players who like things on the low-medium volatile side while possessing a maximum RTP of 96.15%. Players can stake 20 p/c to $/€100 on each paid game round and use either a mobile, tablet, or desktop device to do so.

While the most fun in Dog Town Deal is arguably putting together Blackjack hands, as will be explained later, line wins shouldn't be neglected either. Winning combinations of three to five matching symbols are possible on the game's 5-reel, 3-row, matrix with 20 unchangeable ways to win. The low-pay symbols are casino chips coloured yellow, red, green, and blue, whereas the rest are four canine character symbols. Hitting a five-of-a-kind winning line pays 5x the bet for the paw-covered chips or 15x to 60x the bet for five doggies. Wilds are worth double at 120x the bet for a line of five and can also be used to replace any regular pay symbol.

Dog Town Deal: Slot Features

Face-down cards are the game's scatter symbols, and when at least two of them are in view, something special may be about to occur. Namely, features such as The Deal or Top Dog Free Spins are triggered.

The Deal

This feature triggers when exactly 2 scatter symbols hit. The cards flip to reveal their faces, and the values of the cards are evaluated like a hand of Blackjack. Creating a total of 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, or 21 pays 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 15x the bet, respectively.

Dog Town Free Spins

Getting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols awards players with 7, 10, or 15 free spins, respectively. During free spins, landing a 3, 4, or 5-of-a-kind win generates 1, 2, or 3 cards, respectively. Cards are saved until they form a Blackjack hand. Next to the reels is a prize ladder displaying rewards of 5x to 1,000x the bet. When hands are formed, they may move players up the ladder. Hand values of 16+ move 1 step, a 5 Card Charlie moves you 2 steps, while Blackjack moves you 3 steps. If free spins end and you are left with one card, the round continues until you can make a hand. This is called the Dog Town Deal. At the end, the prize ladder's current value is awarded.

Buy Feature

In certain markets, players can split straight to the bonus round by clicking the bonus buy button and paying an entry fee of 50 times the bet. This activates Dog Town Free Spins with at least three triggering scatters.

Dog Town Deal: Slot Verdict

Quickspin didn't exactly 'let slip the dogs of war' when it set about designing Dog Town Deal. Its math model characteristics and low max win point to more of a lap dog experience than one which wants to tear the arms and legs off of intruders on its property. If that's no big deal, or you're looking for something a bit more mellow yet still enjoyable, then Dog Town Deal might just suit. Using dogs was a smart move. Not only does it tie Dog Town Deal to the long tradition of anthropomorphising dogs by giving them playing cards, but it's also straight-up cute. There's a reason why dog slots can be hard to hate on, even if the game in question did kind of suck.

The positive news is that Dog Town Deal far from sucks, even if it's not a heaving, muscular, red-eyed beast of a game. Quickspin has made an effort to create a bunch of four-pawed characters with colourful backstories and dropped them into a fun location to run amok for a bit. The company is amiable, the Dog Town Casino cosy, and it's easy to settle in and attempt to create a few Blackjack hands while the reels spin. It didn't fire off monstrous results during the review, but to come clean, Dog Town Deal isn't a game which is ever going to, really. According to Quickspin, the biggest hit in over 98 million spins was 1,213 times the bet.

Modest stats don't necessarily make Dog Town Deal a write-off, though. Not everyone wants to leap into the arena with a rabid hound frothing at the mouth, wearing one of those spiky collars every time they engage in a spot of online slot action. For those in the mood for something charmingly less demanding that mixes gambling forms with charismatic canines in a fun, swanky setting, Dog Town Deal could well be the right fit.

Not exactly a savage pit bull of a game, but if low-key chuckles with dogs playing Blackjack appeals, then Dog Town Deal could be the go.
