Dutch Flip: Slot Overview

Clogs, Gouda, and windmills - there can be only one place we're going to experience all of these cultural delights and more, in an online slot from Play'n GO called Dutch Flip. That's right, Dutch Flip is set in the Netherlands, or Holland as some people call it. Following on from that point, The Netherlands is made up of 12 provinces, whereas Holland is technically a region on the west coast, made up of North Holland and South Holland. At least, this is what a Google search told us, so if we have been browsing contentious websites, Dutch readers are invited to please clarify the subject. Anyhow, what is clear is that Dutch Flip is quite a cultural celebration and comes with near win respins plus free spins where reels get flipped.

The Netherlands is famous for its tulip fields, and it's into one of these we land when Dutch Flip fires up. Rows and rows of colourful bulbs illuminate the bottom section of the screen, leading off to trees, windmills, and a cloudy blue sky. A bouncy house track makes up the audio part of the bargain in what is a cheerfully bright portrayal of idyllic rural life in The Netherlands.

A clone of Super Flip which was released back in 2015 (there is also a Danish Flip version), Dutch Flips plays out on a 5x3 game grid which lets players select from 1 to 20 active paylines - this translates to bets of 1 p/c to $/€100 per paid spin. Statistically, Dutch Flip is a medium volatile slot, with solid winning potential on the side of up to 10,000 times the stake - though, frankly, we've never seen Super Flip produce anything near that number during all these years it's been out. Just saying.

Along any active payline, should three or more matching symbols hit in adjacent reels from the leftmost side, monetary rewards are coming your way. Pay symbols start with a quartet of delicate porcelain card royals, J-A, before continuing with higher value Gouda blocks, those epic Dutch caramel cookies, flowers, clogs, and the bane of Amsterdam canals – bicycles. Everything is measured in coins, so landing a winning line of five symbols is worth 20 coins for the lows, 40-250 coins for the highs. Wilds land in all reels and have the same values as the bikes. They can also substitute for all symbols except the scatter.

Free spins and near win respins are the two ways Dutch Flip delivers its thrills. When the first and second reels display the identical stack of symbols and no win is produced, the middle reel respins for a second chance at hitting something. Note that wilds on the first two reels can be used to trigger a respin.

Free Spins

Landing 3 golden scatter symbols on any reel triggers a payout and 15 free spins. During free spins, the reels are flipped, so the last reel is first, and the first reel is last, in an effort to boost wins. Free spins can be retriggered when at least 3 scatters land, up to a maximum of 90 free spins.

Dutch Flip: Slot Verdict

From a thematic standpoint, it's arguable whether Dutch Flip's postcard imagery is overly cliched or a joyous representation of Dutch culture. Players will have to be the judge on that one. In a spirit of light-heartedness, for us, Dutch Flip provided an enjoyable lively look at the tulip growing part of the country with a bunch of classic Dutch symbols on the reels. You can see why tulip fields and windmills are used in countless wallpaper or stock images. It's just so colourfully Dutch. The game's music was particularly cheerful as well, grooving away like the soundtrack at a laid-back Amsterdam lounge bar, making the overall experience of Dutch Flip a rather pleasant one.

On the gaming side of things, Dutch Flip is essentially a copy of Super Flip, a slot Play'n GO released back in 2015. Quite how and why a relatively older game collided with The Netherlands theme to create Dutch Flip is anyone's guess. Whatever the explanation might be, Play'n GO has kept the gameplay basically the same as it was, with little in the way of new developments to explore. Well, there are none, really, meaning a pretty straightforward base game, interspersed with occasional near win respins until eventually unlocking the free spins phase. In the bonus round is where the flip dynamic comes into play, and the results can potentially be tremendous. One of the reasons for Super Flip's popularity was surely its maximum prize of a million coins, or 10,000 times the max bet. Again, this number is likely greatly exaggerated - more realistically speaking, players should aim for wins of around 200-1000x.

A lot has happened in the iGaming space since 2015, but Dutch Flip's features stand up pretty well against modern innovations. It's not the most action-packed game a lot of the time, yet the numbers speak for themselves. So, for a taste of The Netherlands, or a well-known side of it at least, Dutch Flip could be worth a go.
