Although likely meant to resemble an enchanted forest, the visual design is quite trippy with an almost psychedelic feel. In any case, this fantasy world is beautifully illustrated and the hallucinatory sensation is further enhanced by the otherworldly soundtrack. The reels are populated by 4 lower-value card suit symbols in the form of crystals. More valuable still are the 4 colourful plant symbols of which the golden one is the most lucrative, giving you 30 times your stake for 5 on a full payline.

The story in this fairy tale centres around the Firefly Wild. It can land on any reel, replaces all symbols except the scatter and can appear as a regular wild (green firefly), 2x multiplier wild (yellow firefly) or 3x multiplier wild (pink firefly). Should you land more than one on a payline, they will combine to give you a maximum multiplier of 243x (3x3x3x3x3). Astonishingly, this means that you can land line hits of up to 7290 times your stake in the base game alone.

As it turns out, you get more of the same in the Free Spins feature known as Frenzy Spins. Look out for the moon scatter, when one (1) appears in view anywhere on the reels, the bonus can come into play. An army of fireflies will swarm out to trigger the feature if one of them decides to take a rest on the moon scatter. Starting with 8 free spins, the value of the lowest multiplier appearing during the free spins will be the same as the firefly that activated it.

In practicality, this means that if the feature was triggered by a 2x firefly wild, the multiplier wilds will be either 2x or 3x. The feature can also be retriggered in the same way, with the firefly that retriggered it now replacing the previous firefly to become the lowest multiplier that can land.

Visually and mechanically, Firefly Frenzy follows every convention you can imagine and ticks many of the boxes already established by other providers. At the same time, Play'n GO executes it so well that it still manages to make an impression. Preferably, we would have liked for the developers to go with a 243 win ways approach instead of the less appealing 4-row, 30-payline setup. Furthermore, we can't help but feel there should have been more of a twist to the free spin feature, maybe by boosting the multipliers or by offering enhanced reels with stacked wilds.

With that said, Firefly Frenzy is still a decent game and a must try for those who are into high variance slots. The potential here is outstanding as well, but don't count on landing the max win of 10,000 times your stake as you only have about a 1 in a 43 million chance to do so. As is the case with any volatile slot, most of your bonuses will be quite mediocre (which is necessary as the slot needs to collect cash for the jackpot payouts), but with the massive potential distributed across both the base game and the free spin feature, the chance of landing a colossal win is there from the very first spin.
