Flappers Online Slot (Stakelogic): Overview
First things first – a quick definition of the term flapper, of which there are two. The first, less exciting one, is the name given to women whose husbands had been lost on the battlefields of WW1. The second, far more light-hearted definition was used to describe certain Western women in the 1920s. These fun-loving go-getters typically sported a bobbed haircut, were full of life, perhaps a little immoral, wore short skirts, disdained acceptable behaviour, oh, and listened to jazz music. They were hugely outrageous back then, but that sounds like pretty normal behaviour in the decadent times we live in. The good news for players is the Stakelogic has based their Flappers slot around the second, feel-good definition of the word.
The 1920s really did seem like fun, didn’t they? At least they do in the movies and pop culture. All that brilliant art deco fashion and design, the self-confidence humanity seemed to have after dusting themselves off after the horror of the European war. It was time to forget all that and party. Stakelogic’s nod to that licentious time takes place on 5 reels, 3 rows which host 20 paylines. The reels are transparent, and symbols dangle in mid-air, on some elaborate stage in that gold and black styling common from the era. Stakes may vary by operator and will either be 20 p/c to £/€50, or 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, depending on the settings. The goal of the game is landing scatters for the bonus round but until that happens, wins come from combinations of three or more of a kind.
Symbols on the paytable are made up half of Flappers, half of low pays. The low pays are gem-like card suits – hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. The Flappers are all classic models of the era and are colour coded – blue, green, orange, and red. The glamourous red looking one is the most valuable with 5 of a kind paying out 25 times the stake. During the base game, the premiums appear in 3x1 size which can take up a whole reel. The game has a wild symbol which is a golden microphone that comes in a 2x1 size and can substitute for anything except the scatter.
Despite the gangster looking scatter and the glam ladies, Flappers is not an edgy slot at all. It’s fairly tame really. Driving the low key math model is mid-level volatility which has been rated at 3/5. Like stakes, you can bump into two versions of Flappers. One comes with an RTP of 95.48%, which is slightly lower than the current average, but doable. The other has a less appealing RTP of 94.47% providing slightly more advantage to the house. Given what the slot is capable of, for our money, it is tad too much on the low side.
Flappers Online Slot (Stakelogic): Features
Features with the Flappers slot are restricted to a free spins round which changes the base game rules, and a standard gamble feature. As alluded to before, the Al Capone mobster symbol is the scatter which can appear anywhere. It comes in 2x1 size and always counts as 1 scatter whether it is partly or entirely in view. Scatters award 8, 15, or 40 free spins when 3, 4, or 5 of them land respectively. A decent amount, but keep in mind that scatters do not appear during free spins so the bonus game cannot be retriggered.
During Free Spins, the premium girl symbols are shrunk to 1x1 size, but they can expand to cover full reels to create additional wins when they land. This happens due to the introduction of active reels. On every free spin, 1 – 5 reels are randomly chosen to become active. If one of the 1x1 premium Flapper symbols lands on an active reel, it expands to 3x1 size and also become a Wild Girl Symbol. Wild Girl Symbols can substitute for all other symbols during free spins, and 3, 4, or 5 of them payout 50, 200, or 1,000 coins respectively.
To squeeze every last ounce out of Flappers, players can choose to Gamble the wins they pick up. If this feature is selected, the reels become overlaid with the gamble feature that involves guessing the suit or colour of a blind card. Get the suit right, and it’s double your money, while guessing the right suit pays out x4. Of course, guess wrong and the feature ends with the win forfeited.
Flappers Online Slot (Stakelogic): Verdict
Flappers has its moments. It’s a jolly wee jaunt back to the 1920s with okay aesthetics. The ladies on the symbols look like they would have been a riot to party with back in the day and exude flappery-ness. For the laid back gambler, a good time could perhaps be had. It’s best to look out for the higher RTP version of course if you are planning a trip back to the Roaring Twenties. If players are happy with the frail stats and low level wins they might just have okay time.
For other players, Flappers will come across as an inhibited cocktail party with acquaintances you barely know rather than a raging Berlin knees-up. The main culprits are the mid-range volatility and the disappointing potential that Flappers has to offer. Max potential must be working on a 1920s exchange rate before hyperinflation kicked in. The most that players can look forward to is 1,798 times the bet which is hardly a ticket to the Jay Gatsby mansion, and a deal-breaker for the more discerning gambler. Overall, Flappers is a cute game but would have benefitted from more of the freewheeling extravagance of the heroines of its title.
Flappers is nowhere near as wild, crazy, and fun as the original heroines were famed for, nor its riches all that impressive either.
