Gemix: Slot Overview

Join a wizard, a princess, and a pick axe-wielding miner, in developer Play'n GO’s cute grid slot Gemix. The fairy tale style might sound a little bit too much, but rest assured, Play'n GO has worked their grid slot magic to create a highly playable game. While hitting clusters, players trigger a multitude of features as they travel between mysterious worlds in the hopes of filling a charge meter to unleash a bevvy of features for solid, if not outstanding, winning potential.

It might feel like you’re playing a mixture of Candy Crush and My Little Pony at first as the rainbow adorned load screen gives way to the game proper. Here you’ll find a 7 by 7 sized grid, dropping in 49 hard sweet looking symbols to form wins when 5 or more of the same type connect horizontally or vertically. The rest of the view is taken up by various meters we cover below, while background imagery is dependent on the world you happen to be in. Certain features are only available in each world, which changes location when certain criteria are met. Before getting deep into the features, let’s take in the light-hearted cartoon surroundings for a moment.

Don’t get taken in too far though, Gemix might look cute on the outside, yet beneath the surface lies a medium volatility (6/10) math model that can still nip the unwary. Keep an eye out for variable RTP too, where the default value is quite generous at 96.83%, especially so compared to the 94.79% or less found elsewhere. Bet selection is wide too, where stakes from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin are available.

Whenever a win hits in Gemix, it is removed and replaced by a bunch of new symbols. This means consecutive wins are possible on the same spin, only halting when no new wins cluster up. As mentioned, hard candies make up the paytable - 4 for the lows, 4 for the higher paying flowers, moons, hearts, and star-shaped ones. The most valuable clusters are made up of 15 or more identical symbols, and should this be of premiums, then a payout of 100 to 1,000 the stake is coming your way.

Gemix: Slot Features

As clusters are hitting, the number of symbols used in each one is collected on the crystal charge meter. When the meter is fully charged, one of the following Crystal Charge effects is triggered when there are no more cascades:

  • Chain Lightning – two opposite corner symbols shoot an electrical arc, destroying any symbols it touches.
  • Light Beam – light rays shoot vertically and horizontally from a symbol on the grid, transforming all symbols it hits.
  • Crystal Warp – One symbol is selected, and all instances of it on the grid warp to other symbols.
  • Nova Blast – one symbol on the grid explodes, removing adjacent symbols in an explosion. It then creates a core of matching symbols.

If 40 symbols are collected in the charge meter, a Super Charge feature is awarded. This is one of the 4 Crystal Charge features from above, with the addition of an x3 multiplier. This can only happen once per game round.

To move through the worlds, you will need to hit cluster wins on top of highlighted grid patterns. Clearing a pattern moves you to the next world. Each world has a unique wild feature that triggers randomly on non-winning spins.

  • Miner’s World – up to ten wild symbols may be added to the grid.
  • Princess’ World – wilds appear from one edge of the grid to the other.
  • Wizard’s World – up to 8 sticky wilds may appear, remaining on the grid even when used in a win.

Wilds substitute for any pay symbols and are removed if part of a winning combination if they are not of the sticky variety.

Gemix: Slot Verdict

Gemix has a lot going on, but it’s by no means a complicated game. The main goal is stringing consecutive winning combinations together in hopes of filling the Crystal Charge Meter to blast the game grid with a selection of features. Despite not offering a round of free spins, you tend not to notice they are missing after a while, so frequently do Crystal Charge features trigger and the lengthy nature of solid win runs. Only twenty symbols are needed for a standard charge which is lower than many other of its grid slot competitors require.

The other compelling element to Gemix is its World Pattern feature, making the game fun for two reasons. First, it adds an interesting challenge on each spin to complete, doubling the incentive to hit consecutive clusters. Secondly, changing worlds means you get three different wild features to experience, each one bringing an individual benefit. Rotating through patterns and worlds keeps the gaming fresh and engaging. Gemix might not look or act overly hardcore, yet its effortlessly enjoyable gaming is hard to put down and is capable of decent payouts as well. Potential is certainly not a disappointment since wins of up to 4,513 times the stake are possible from its gem-encrusted worlds.

Released in 2014, Gemix is starting to age a little around the edges, especially when compared to the sequel, Gemix 2. Not so much its looks which still hold up quite well, but it has been eclipsed by latter grid slots built to meet the demand for highly volatile games. Still, for something a little more forgiving than others, in a game more likely to drop a bunch of features to keep the flow going, Gemix is as fun as ever.
