Grim Reaper Supermatch: Slot Overview
Since way back, various cultures have used different characters and ways to personify or represent death. One which has stuck around into modern times is the Grim Reaper, as seen in a wide variety of cultural forms such as comic books, movies, and so on, often represented as a hooded character holding a scythe. According to Britannica, the Grim Reaper first appeared in Europe in the 14th century, when the Black Death was running rampant, killing one-third of the population. It's almost impossible to imagine what death and disease on that scale would be like, though a hooded figure scything through the population feels like an apt image.
On a brighter note, we come to Grim Reaper Supermatch from Games Global partner Nailed It! Games. Grim Reaper Supermatch is a follow-up to Rome Supermatch, and both possess a unique way of trying your luck. This time, though, players are not placed in a statued, columned, Ancient Roman location. Instead, it's a cemetery where Grim Reaper Supermatch is played, all misty, murky, and dimly lit, where a female Grim Reaper hovers by the game board, and a horror-esque soundtrack plays. With a vaguely Nightmare Before Christmas vibe, Grim Reaper Supermatch definitely isn't a slot full of jump scares, but Nailed It! Games has nicely paired its unique gaming engine with an enjoyable, mildly neck hair-raising setting to experience it in.
The view of Grim Reaper Supermatch has a slight ground-up angle, giving the 5-columned gaming grid a touch of extra gravitas. Supermatch games are played differently from your usual spinning reel slot. Hit the spin button, and the bottom row reveals 5 symbols. Landing 3 or more matching symbols on the bottom row unlocks the next row. If at least one matching symbol lands on rows 2-5, the next row above it is unlocked. Players are able to wager 10 p/c to $/€40 on each spin and choose to activate one of the two Bet Boosters. More on this below. A medium volatile slot, Grim Reaper Supermatch has a default RTP of 96.15%, with three lower configurations available.
Matching 30 symbols when rows are unlocked produces the biggest win. From low to high are J, Q, K, and A symbols, then a skull, a pumpkin, a Frankentsein's monster type, and a female character. Landing a 30 OAK win using these symbols generates a payout of 400 to 2,000 times the bet. Spreading Wilds may appear on rows 2 to 6 in free spins or the base game, substituting for regular matching pay symbols. When wilds hit, they spread to cover the whole row they landed on.
Grim Reaper Supermatch: Slot Features
Further features in Grim Reaper Supermatch include Mega Respins, the Halfway Bonus, Mystery Stacks, the Soulcatcher Bonus, free spins, and the Bet Boosters.
Mega Respins
Uncovering matching symbols on the 6th row activates the Mega Respins feature. All of the matching symbols become sticky, while all other symbols respin. Mega Respins are awarded as long as new winning symbols are revealed on the spin. Mega Respins are available in the base game and in free spins.
Halfway Bonus
Landing a matching symbol on the 3rd row in the base game or in free spins activates the Halfway Bonus. One of these features will trigger:
- Second Chance – automatically respins one row that did not reveal any matching symbols, or all rows if Mega Respins did not reveal a matching symbol.
- 15 Of A Kind – turns all non-winning symbols into winning symbols on rows 1-3.
- Symbol Upgrade – turns all winning symbols on rows 1 to 3 into a random higher-paying symbol. It can't be awarded if the top-paying symbol is the winning symbol.
- x2 Multiplier – doubles the symbol win at the end of the spin.
- Soul Booster – adds 1 to 5 Blue Souls to the Soulcatcher Chest in the base game or 1 to 5 Red Souls to the Free Spins Soul Collection during free spins. Not available in free spins if the Soul Collection has been filled.
Mystery Stacks
Landing 3 or more Mystery symbols on the first row in the base game or in free spins triggers this feature. Each Mystery symbol expands by 1 to 5 positions forming a stack up to 6 symbols high. All Mystery symbols reveal the same paying symbol.
Soulcatcher Bonus
2 to 8 Blue Souls appear on the rows at the start of each spin. Revealing a position with a Blue Soul collects it in the Soulcatcher Chest. The chances of triggering the Soulcatcher Bonus increase with the number of collected Blue Souls. The Soulcatcher Chest randomly awards the Soulcatcher Bonus, which starts at the end of the current spin. During the Soulcather Bonus, one spin triggers with a special set of symbols - each row is uncovered from the bottom to the top. At the end of the spin, the symbol with the highest count pays out. If 2 or more symbols have the same count, the higher-paying symbol is awarded. The purple gem pays 10x the bet, the yellow gem pays 40x the bet, the red gem pays 200x the bet, and the diamond pays 5,000x the bet. This feature is only available in the base game.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols on the first row triggers 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. 2 to 8 Red Souls are spread on the grid at the start of each free spin. Revealing the position with Red Souls adds them to the Free Spins Soul Collection. Collecting 5 Red Souls awards +3 free spins and removes the lowest paying symbol. An additional 10 Red Souls awards +3 free spins and removes the next lowest paying symbols. An additional 15 Red Souls awards +3 free spins and removes the next lowest paying symbols. An additional 20 Red Souls awards +3 free spins and removes the next lowest paying symbols.
Bet Boosters
The Bet Booster provides two betting modes. Stacks & Moons costs 20x the bet, and on each spin, only Mystery symbols or free spin symbols land on the first row. Always Match guarantees 3+ matching symbols on the first row on each spin for 4x the bet. The RTP is the same whether using Bet Boosters or not.
Grim Reaper Supermatch: Slot Verdict
Well, that was pretty alright y'all. Grim Reaper Supermatch was not as smack you in the face original as Rome Supermatch was, but in a good way. What we mean is the shock has lessened, letting us sit back and take in what Grim Reaper Supermatch can do without being overwhelmed by novelty. The base Supermatch function, land matching symbols on rows from the bottom all the way to the top remains, yet every other new feature and adjustment the studio poured into Grim Reaper Supermatch made it an arguably superior experience over the original. Not saying Rome Supermatch was a poor debut, but Grim Reaper Supermatch just felt more rounded, more fun, and the engaging interplay of features more impactful.
As well, there's the theme, and it was heartening to see Nailed It! Games pick something a bit more out of the ordinary than it usually does. Not only is the Grim Reaper here, but she's a she by the looks, and she rules over a delightfully spooky realm. Moving onto the features, it's hard to pick many, if any, holes in the gameplay. Players get a feature when reaching the third row, which is hardly a major ask, though they did tend to be Soul Boosters quite a lot which didn't seem to do much in the base game, though Red Souls in free spins could be a help in removing low pay symbols from the reels and getting your hooks in extra free spins. Making it all the way to the top, thereby triggering Mega Respins, wasn't a once-in-a-blue moon, Herculean task either, and could be fun. The Soulcatcher Bonus proved tough to trigger, though, and presumably is one of if not the best places for possibly achieving Grim Reaper Supermatch's 5,000x the bet top win.
Kudos to Nailed It! Games for sticking to its guns and doing something original again. Needless to say, Grim Reaper Supermatch won't be to all tastes, but in the end, each of the game's components seemed to work well with the other bits, not to mention the Supermatch feature at its heart, resulting in a satisfying session when all was scythed and done.
Fair
Grim Reaper Supermatch is a polished second outing for Nailed It! Games, with solid supporting features and a more original backdrop.
