Heroes’ Gathering Slot (Relax Gaming): Overview

Relax Gaming is here to entertain with a new board game styled slot. They previously made use of a classic mobile game for inspiration in the Snake Arena video slot. Snake is pretty old school, but Heroes’ Gathering goes one further and is based around the humble board game. Gaming nerds will be rejoicing over another slot to feature a board game bonus feature. This traditional form of gaming is experiencing something of a renaissance at the moment. It has been helped by things like board game bars, 3D printing your own face on figures, and the overall increase in quality. They clearly resonate with gamblers too, hence the increasing occurrence in slots. Now Relax Gaming gives table-top fans the chance to spin reels while all wrapped up in a classic D&D style theme to carry the action.

The game starts with an unusual touch. The 5 reel, 3 row area is laid out on a table like an actual board game. It has a sort of optical slant to it which is ever so disorientating at first. Nothing major, or off-putting, and a few spins in and you won’t even notice. Littered around the reels are random objects like gold coins, barrels, gems, keys, a chair; it’s like an Elder Scrolls Tavern. Medieval music drifts through the speakers, like a bard twanging away on a cittern, and to be honest; it’s quite a cool effect. Play it with a tankard of mead by a roaring fire for the full effect perhaps.

Lighten that coin bag by choosing stakes that start at 10 p/c up to £/€100 per spin. Heroes’ Gathering might look different, thanks to the viewpoint, but the gameplay is pretty regular. Get three or more matching symbols on one of the 20 fixed paylines, and you’ve scored a payout. The symbol you want is the battle suited knight peering through a helm who is worth 20 times the stake for five of a kind. The rest of the premiums in descending order are a mage, a friendly goblin, a coat of arms, a book, and a couple of blades. Three low pays finish off the paytable in the form of circular gold/jewel objects. The most profitable symbol is actually the wild, which looks like a swirling mage’s orb. It can substitute any of the pay symbols and will pay out 50 times the stake for a line of five.

If there is one thing that D&D players obsess over it’s stats. Movement, magic points, ballistic skill, the list is long and detailed. Slots players aren’t far behind, and the key stats here are an RTP of 96.45% coupled with medium volatility. Most heroes, sorry, players will be fine with that setup so let’s fire up the features.

Heroes’ Gathering Slot (Relax Gaming): Features

Free spins round in action

The base game here is a build-up to the bonus round where the board game comes into play. Paradoxically, it is simpler than other slot board games because there are only a few different squares, and they don’t really modify spins. On the other hand, it's going to be tough to try and convey the rules, but here we go.

There are 2 bonus games, and the most desirable is triggered when 3 scatters land on reels 1, 3, and 5. When that happens, the Board Game Main feature comes to life with free spins that do not have a set limit. The reels spin and any wins get collected. If a wheel symbol lands on reel 3 it's spun and the player moves 1-6 spaces around the board. The game has 3 amulets, and each has a prize pot– bronze, silver, and gold.

If the player lands on a square with one of those colours they collect a pin that corresponds to it. If they land on a corner square then 5x, 10x, 20x or 100x the bet is added to all three pots, and all pins are removed. Any reels win associated with a coloured pot has the amount doubled and added to it. Going around the whole board removes the pins, and landing on the start square doubles all three pot values. The feature ends when three pins of one pot are collected. Then the corresponding amount is paid along with the round win total. Hopefully, that made some semblance of sense. It certainly does when it's in action.

There's a mini version of this feature as well. Known as the Board Game Mini feature, it comes into play when 2 scatters appear on reels 1, 3, or 5. Fortunately, the rules are basically the same except that the first coloured square that the player lands on is the only prize pot for the game, and corner multipliers vary from x5-x50 this time.

Heroes’ Gathering Slot (Relax Gaming): Verdict

Heroes’ Gathering is a well-built slot but one that wears thin rather quickly. It's definitely not one of the most innovative of slots to roll out of the Relax Gaming production line so to speak although it may give you that impression at first glance. If you're one of those players that go for looks rather than what's beneath the hood, you might be satisfied as Relax Gaming has done a commendable job building a nice looking slot that oozes atmosphere and fantastical elements. Others that want a more intense slot will be left a little wanting. The main reason is that the board game, is a little, well, boring.

While the bonus game is the show stopper, it’s just not as exciting as others in the same category. What lets it down, is that there are no modifiers on the board like you would expect to find, the rounds don’t typically last that long. The overall game world is brilliant for those into the Warhammer/D&D thing, but the substance doesn’t quite match up to the style. It’s a shame because the game world is a real cosy place to curl up and reside in for a few spins.

Relax Gaming has produced a nice game for fans of the fantasy genre to enjoy. Those that don’t get their kicks hacking through hordes of orcs, or pretending to be hobbits won’t be quite so enchanted.
