Hugo's Adventure (Play'n GO): Overview
In 1987, two Danish guys named Ivan Sølvason and Niels Krogh Mortensen came up with a groundbreaking idea - they were going to create an interactive video game TV Show that would allow viewers to interact with the live broadcast by controlling the character in the game with their telephones without delay. Having developed a fully functional custom-built system as well as the character of Hugo, the concept was eventually realized in 1990. Hugo went on to become a massive hit, eventually turned into a franchise and licensed to over 40 TV-channels around the world. Those of you who were around when it all unfolded can probably still remember all the frustrated kids trying to make the disobedient Hugo go in the direction they so badly wanted, frantically pressing those telephone buttons.
Since then, media franchise Hugo has been included in numerous video games, apps, books, movies and even rap albums. Thanks to Swedish software developer Play'n GO, he's also the host of several casino games. While the first slot to feature Hugo was strictly based on the TV show, the follow-ups allowed us to see the friendly little troll in various other settings. In Hugo 2, for example, he was a locomotive driver, and in Hugo Goal, we got to see him as a rather useless goalkeeper. Out of these titles, Hugo 2 is the only one we can actually recommend, albeit none of them have been particularly good.
In the fourth instalment titled Hugo's Adventure, Hugo's world has expanded. It comes with a bonus game where you'll see him dive to the deepest depths in search of treasures, and a free spins feature that takes him to dizzying heights. Highly volatile, the game is played using a layout of 5 reels and 10 fixed paylines while accepting bets from between 0.10 to £/€100 per spin.
Every time a new Hugo slot comes out, debates arise regarding the childish theme which some feel is distasteful. In an age where the casino industry is slowly being choked to death by an increasing set of rules, it's either brave or crazy of Play'n GO to release a game like this. Regardless of all that, it's hard to deny that Hugo's Adventure looks fun. While the artwork is similar as in the other games, there are, of course, new settings to explore here. With a picture-perfect paradise backdrop, symbols on the reels include A to 10 card suits as well as the more rewarding monkey repairman, eagle pilot, and stewardess Hugolina. Hugo himself is the most lucrative, giving you 50 times your stake for a five of a kind combination.
Hugo's Adventure (Play'n GO): Features
There are two features included in Hugo's Adventure. The first one is the Underwater Adventure bonus pick game which comes into play when 2 submarine bonus scatters appear on reels 2 and 4 simultaneously. Before the adventure begins, you get to spin a golden submarine slot machine that can give you up to 3 lives (hearts). Next, you get to choose undersea treasures - these can reveal either cash prizes or take away one life. At the end of the bonus you will get one spin on the submarine multiplier for each life you have left. This gives you a chance to accumulate a multiplier of up to 20x, which is then applied to your total winnings from the bonus game.
Things heat up when you land 3 airplane scatter symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 which will grant you access to the Air Ace Free Spins feature. Starting with 9 spins and 1 life, keep an eye out for +1 heart balloon symbols as this will add an extra life to your total. If, on the other hand, Hugo is hit with an air mine, it will reduce his life by 1. There are also extra spins to be won up to a total of 20.
There's more to the free spins feature than that, however. If lucky, you will see flying wilds appear on the reels. These will fly from right to left, moving one step to the left with every spin until it falls out of view. Moreover, up to 4 x2 multiplier balloons can land on each spin to give you a multiplier of up to 16x on a single payline. Finishing the free spins round with one or several lives left will automatically grant you access to the Underwater Adventure feature.
Hugo's Adventure (Play'n GO): Verdict
Hugo's Adventure is the most volatile Hugo slot to date and also the best in the series, which isn't really much of an achievement we might add. As typically is the case with these slots, the bonus game is just a filler to spice things up a bit. In reality, it's all about the free spins game which is quite fun actually. Not only is it surprisingly entertaining, but the potential is also excellent, offering up a chance to pocket up to 5000 times your stake.
If you enjoyed the other Hugo games, you will probably like this one even more. Even if you're not a fan of the ugly Scandinavian troll, the game is definitely worth a shot as the potential is good and the features well thought out. Unless you find the cartoon graphics disturbing, of course.
Don’t let the license fool you. Hugo’s Adventure is loaded with intense gameplay for any gambler to appreciate.
